The Scarlet Sacrament spread through my homeland's clergy and parishoners like a disease, and by the time anyone became aware of the vile tincture it was too late. I travel now to learn more about the evil brew and put a stop to it, and to bring those who make it to justice. Until then, I do what I can to help others along the way who are in need, especially those suffering symptoms of the Scarlet Sickness.
My father forced me into his wizardry academy at the age of 5, It all ended when my mother who I was told was dead attacked and raided the academy when I was 14, only a couple of us young survived. I lived on the streets, I still wanted to continue my studies so I snuck into libraries and tried to learn as many spells as I could but I couldn't learn on my own. One of my friends, Krios Evenheart, told me about a group who worshiped beings from other planes and used there magic, I joined them and signed my pact with the Great Old One, I sacrificed my soul to help others
"I was once part of a nomad clan, scavenging the wastes of Shiloh for water, fuel, and usable weave tech. But my mentor betrayed my team to the Echelon money-worshippers and helped them gun us down. Now I'm chasing vengeance for my fallen brethren, no matter where it takes me."
You were a scribe for a Devil in Avernus for as long as you can remember until adventurers from the Material Plane killed your Devil.
You snuck through the adventurers' portal into the Material Plane before another Devil could claim you.
While you find yourself free to do anything, you also find yourself needing to provide for yourself and never staying in one place lest a Devil comes looking for the Lost Scribe.
Best for a level 1 character—level 3 at most. Infernal must be one of the known languages unless there is a backstory reason that the language is forgotten. Discuss with the DM if there is any natural Attunement to Avernus. Otherwise, feel free to pick any further character details. Perhaps, the character knows some terrible secrets or has night terrors from the experiences in Avernus. Perhaps, the Attunement is like a tracer that a Devil could investigate if the character lingered too long somewhere.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I used to deal soothsalts in the back allies of Draconia… that is, until I dealt some to the wrong merchant’s daughter and she got hooked. The merchant sent mercs after me and I had to flee for my life, luckily I got out in time. Now I’m a Dragonborn without a home, and I’ve taken to using some of my… other skills to make a living that is, while more lucrative, a lot more dangerous than dealing was (at least until the end there).
Well, my daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle. Taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle. He taught me how to love and how to give just a little and thank the Gods I'm a country boy.
*Presenting Johan Danvar, Outlander for background and who knows what for class but likely a bard if you are familiar with country/folk music ftom the 1970's/80's.

I used to live with my aunt and uncle, working on their moisture farm. When the evil empire came and slaughtered my family one day while I was away, I swore to do everything I could to get justice tor them. So I set off with a wizened old magic user, a pirate, his first mate, and a brassy princess and we travel around on an adventure to overthrow the emperor.
Had there been a like button it would have been pressed!
And yes I recognised that reference!
Thank you. And DDB calls likes “thanks,” and there is a thanks button, just turn your phone sideways and it’s in the lower left and corner of the post.
This is more just a personality framework than full backstory.
You are at peace with being a Dhampir as luck or fate ordained for you.
The endless surprises and ingenuity of people, both mortal and immortal, continue to fascinate and delight you after all this time.
Adventurers seem the most willing to indulge your favorite pastime of just working alongside people.
The only real restrictions are Dhampir and a happy personality—with a possible outward appearance of naïveté without really being naïve at all.

My family was just another normal family, but I hated being normal, I wanted to be extraordinary, I wanted to be somebody people remembered. So when I was old enough I signed on with the first crew that came through town and, I haven’t looked back. I’ve been training night and day and am finally getting pretty good at this whole “adventurer” thing.
The son of a herder and a Street Vendor, recruited by a wandering underworld boss who got him banned from his home city when he refused a task set out for him.
Now left wandering the land with his wagon and lone steed earning his way by ferrying customers and goods to the outlying settlements just not his own home.
Thats how he met the others they bartered for travel and he helped them fence their loot and in return he found a new home.
I grew up being wealthy but I stayed noble to others. Family if everything to me so I set off in a voyage to seek greatness and make my family proud. I came back 6 years later with stories is glory and items of mystery but I came back with a secret that could destroy my world.
I was born an orc in an orc tribe. Many years later, a swarm of evil mind flayers (AH!!!!) invaded my home. I fought well, and was rewarded with a promotion to clan chieftan, to replace the old one who had died in the battle. I soon cut out my eye, in service to the god Gruumsh, and he in turn rewarded me with magical spell casting powers. A voice in my head spoke to me, it told me that I was not destined as a leader and planner, but as I warrior. I heeded that advice on it took me down the road to an adventuring life.
(This works for a cleric, or level 2+ paladin since they get spells as well.)

A hobgoblin exiled by his tribe, betrayed by his mentor and nearly executed for trumped-up charges to assuage his teacher's growing envy of his latent potential, Zaldrick Lonelaw was sure his fate was to end a pariah to family and friend alike, thrown to an ignominous end for daring to threaten his master's position of power with his rapid growth. In the darkness of his cell, awaiting a trial that would have been more public formality than fair justice, he disavowed himself of his tribe's patron, the archdevil Belial, and made an oath to pledge himself to whomever could see him liberated from his wretched ending. There, in fire and blood, he accepted a wedding band, scorching his right hand, and swore himself gladly to serve the archdevil Glasya, cutting down wicked souls to feed the cells of the Malebolge below, whilst inferring service to his Lady's Ring of Hell to those who, like him, find themselves imprisoned by the corrupt and unjust abuses of the spirit of law.

Past and Current Characters: Morgann 'Duskspear' Solbeard, Hill Dwarf Paladin/Fighter/Warlock; Ephemeral 'Skye' Solbeard, Hill Dwarf Artificer; Zaldrick Lawscrip of Orzhov, Hobgoblin Wizard; Eremys Spydrun, Shadar'kai Monk; Cuchulainn, Wood Elf Blood Hunter.
I was an ordinary frog, in a testing lab. The scientists injected me with moon nectar, turning me into a humanoid creature called a Freggr. I joined a monastery to attempt to figure out my destiny, I am now Kermit the zen frog.
When I was a kid everyone said I wasn’t quite right, that I was “strange” somehow, or that there was something “off” about me; it caused my parents no end of pain. They once took me to the village wise woman to have my tea leaves read, and even she said that there was something “unnatural” in my destiny. When I turned 13 and could suddenly start shooting fire from my hands and making things move with my mind I ran away from home so as to not cause my parents any more heartache, and one day I’ll return home as a fully fledged Sorcerer and show them how special their son really is.

Now though, news of a familiar evil has reached her ears and she has resolved to join with a new band of adventurers to make things right.
