He/Him. Loooooooooong time Player. The Dark days of the THAC0 system are behind us.

D&D putting out a supplement with Lovecraftian creatures no more lets them assert ownership than D&D putting out stats for a minotaur, and Wizards is perfectly aware of that (sure, someone might get overeager, but for the most part they understand what they can actually lay claim to). Just don't grab the text and images they created.

I have no idea what this is referring to, so my guess is "not"

GW is apparently being very aggressive about copyright strikes at the moment, in at least some cases completely nonsensically, which is what happens when you feed a bunch of names to bots that don't actually have subject matter experience. Which is not zero risk here, but given that they're already partnering with Chaosium (see https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/BB-3RDPARTY-2025/DBIRFDZMU), seems likely to get ironed out pretty quickly if it does happen.
I am a little disappointed that they went with Innsmouth as the domain name. Within the context of the Mythos, that is one of the more terrestrial locations, and a bit of a weird title for an entire supernatural location. I think “Kadathl - the trippy dream plane of The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath - might have made a better choice. It would allow the cosmic horror of Lovecraft, while also providing an environment that both feels more like a domain of dread than “New England fishing town”, while also allowing Wizards to explore a side of the Mythos regularly ignored by other game companies.
I am also disappointed a nonsensical, unsupported rabble-rousing post has derailed this thread.

It may not be a "let's cover the entire Mythos in one Domain" thing though. It might just be Lovecraft's New England -- Innsmouth, Dunwich, Miskatonic U. and surroundings. A realm of sanity-blasting horrors hidden behind mundane facades, of scholars driven to possess unspeakable knowledge regardless of the price they pay to acquire it
Or maybe it's just Innsmouth, but it also covers the murky depths of the sea, R'lyeh, etc. There wasn't really a nautical horror domain given a writeup in VRGtR
Kadath would imply a very different vibe to me

I'm down for a domain of dread that invokes Innsmouth and profoundly upsetting cosmic horror. We went to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando a few years ago and my favorite haunted house by a wide margin was basically "New England fishing village overcome with unsettling spirits and abominations from the deep" and it was amazing. I'd love to get those vibes in a good, creepy D&D game and leave Lovecraft himself and all his grossness by the wayside.

Let's not do this song & dance again.
It always snowballs to mod action.
One public domain setting does not a scam or Games Workshop make.
Going with 1 more of something well-known, ESPECIALLY after how Ravenloft was received LAST time(Lack of meat on the bones), is not unreasonable.

I supose that they see Bluetspur covering this

"Innsmouth" is more recognizable as part of the Lovecraft Mythos than "Kadathl" by a considerable margin. I suspect that was their primary goal.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
