Hello all, I'm new to D&D Beyond, and have been playing around with just the PHB and basic rules. I have a game coming up this weekend, but I don't see a way to really do anything besides build characters and look up rules using Beyond? Can I like, make maps or set up a series of fights or anything like that?
The compendium, listings (monsters, spells, etc.) and character builder are the heart of DDB. It is not possible to create maps here. It's possible that's on the loooooong term roadmap, but it won't be happening any time soon. They are working on an encounter builder, which I think would address the second part of your question. They hope to have an alpha out to interested subscribers soon.
There's also a "campaign" section, that is mostly useful for sharing content with other users if you have a Master Tier subscription, but with some patience it can be used to keep notes on the campaign with links to monsters, homebrew, etc. That part is VERY rudimentary at this point.
I've really appreciated the listings (Monsters, Spells, etc.), especially with the extensive filters. But it's not yet a "one stop shop" for DnD campaigns if you want to be able to do everything here. Features are still being added, so I'm confident it will grow in that direction.
A virtual table top is on the feature roadmap in the long term future. An encounter builder is a shorter term improvement they will be making.
There are a couple of extensions you can use with Chrome to add some helpful stuff, mainly
Beyond Help gives you an encounter builder and monster HP tracking among other things
D&D Toolbox gives you a die roller and initiative tracker
Not to be pimping out my own extension or anything, but to pimp it out D&D Toolbox also provides an encounter and health tracker for monsters via the initiative tracker.
