I found a homebrew monster that is perfect for my next session - but none of the spells in its description have the [spell] tag, so they aren't clickable.
Is there a way to clone that homebrew so I can fix it? Or do I need to build it from scratch (or contact the original author)?
Bumping this thread. If I have "added to my collection" a homebrew monster that someone else created, I should have the option to use it as a template to create my own version from it. However, homebrew monsters created by others do not come up as options to use in building a homebrew monster.
Homebrew monsters that I have created myself DO come up as options to be used as templates, but not homebrew by others.
We should be able to adjust other's homebrew monsters for ourselves in the same way we can adjust stock monsters or our own.
Hi any news about this feature? I imagine there is some underlying technical problem in how Homebrew entities have been managed up until now that is making this feature still unavailable. It's a pretty straightforward thing to do as a DM, browsing community ideas and start from there instead of reinventing the wheel...
100% This should be a feature!!! It really hurts the overall system for this not to be an option, because now I just use the janky thing someone else came up with rather than cloning, renaming, and then publishing my own versions that clean it all up.
I'd love to publish my holistic collection of "blights" that make sense together, but it's too much work.
Someone said you can copy and paste, but can you? What I want to copy and paste is the source-format of the monster to put in the fields, not the base text. If I just copy and paste the base text, it loses all the stuff that makes clickable buttons and links. Redoing all that is too much of a pain.
In short: Once you've added a homebrew to your collection, it should be available in the list of "Use an existing monster as a template" options when I click "Create homebrew monster".
There should also be a button on every homebrew monster that says "Create a new homebrew monster based on this".
And in terms of copyright: Who cares? This content is only being monetized by DNDBeyond, none of us should be babies about it. A vibrant ecosystem of shared monsters is what's best for everyone.

D&D player going back to the 90s with 2e and 3e. Didn't play for years and ended up skipping 3.5e and 4e entirely. Very excited about the openness and clarity of 5e.
Experiences DMing were mostly misadventures back in the day, but trying to be ready to be a decent DM now that my wisdom has gone up a bit.

You would either have to contact the author, or recreate it for yourself. (You can just copy/paste.)

Still waiting for this to become a possibility. This would make life easier for DMs and encourage further use of homebrew content.

Why would they allow someone to use a published work as a template for something else? That's like step 1 in plagiarism.

True, but doesn’t DDB own all the homebrew on this site anyways? So it’s not like you can copyright your work.

DDB does. That's the agreement.
