Ok, let's do this. I'm basing this more off the movies then the book, as we really don't get to much on Thorin in it.
Race: Mountain Dwarf. He doesn't display any of the hill dwarf characteristics, or their toughness.
Class:Thorin's a standard Fighter, Champion subclass.
Starting Ability Scores: STR 16 (Thorin is one of the strongest dwarves), DEX 12 (he's fairly nimble, but not exceptionally so), CON 15 (he's not as tough as he is strong, but he's still tough), INT 12 (he's not dumb, even if he isn't a genius), WIS 14 (this is debatable, it could be 13), CHA 15 (he's a good leader).
Background: Thorin's a Noble, no if ands or buts about it. His feature would apply only to dwarves, not other races though. The History and Persuasion skills make sense for him (he's well-versed in the history of his race and general knowledge of the world, and he's very good at rallying troops and similar).
Equipment: Chain Shirt (he gets some plate at the end of the adventure, and loses his chain shirt somewhere in the middle), Orcrist (a +3 longsword that glows when goblinoids or orcs are within 500 feet of it and deals an extra 1d6 radiant damage to goblinoids and orcs while glowing), and a shield (see below)
In the Behind the Scenes of the Hobbit movies, the writers revealed that they were toying with the idea of Thorin having kept the oaken branch he used as a shield in the battle of Azanulbizar and continuing to use it. This idea was ultimately scrapped, but I really like the idea of it. If you do end up playing Thorin in a game, I'd recommend using this idea, as it makes your Thorin be a little more distinctive, while keeping in line (somewhat) with established canon. I'll be using this idea throughout the guide, but it's easy to remove it if you don't like it.
LEVEL BY LEVEL CLASS GUIDE.
1st Level: For skills, take Survival (Thorin’s good at it, after losing his kingdom and wandering the wilds for years) and Perception (Thorin's eyes may not be as keen as Bilbo's, but he still seems to have keener senses then the rest of the dwarves, such as when he realizes they are being watched by spiders in Mirkwood). Take the Dueling Fighting Style, Thorin favours his offense over defense (as exemplified by his armor choices). Second Wind can be used when you're at 1 hit point to bring you up enough to use Action Surge to wack a warg that's got you in its mouth and take the corresponding falling damage without dying.
2nd Level: We see Thorin use Action Surge many times, the situation above being an example.
3rd Level:Grab the Champion archetype. Improved Critical is another ability that you can see a lot of in the movie.
4th Level:Bump that STR up to 18.
5th Level:Extra Attack is always good.
6th Level:Bump your CON and CHA up to 16.
7th Level:Remarkable Athlete again suits Thorin, cause while he seems quite Athletic, he isn't quite as beefy as Dwalin, who has full proficiency in Athletics.
8th Level: Grab a feat. Martial Adept makes sense for Thorin. Take the Parry and Riposte maneuvers, we see Thorin do similar stuff in some fights.
9th Level:Indomitable sure.
10th Level: Take the Great Weapon Fighting Style. We see Thorin consistently wield a sword with two hands for the first time in the Battle of the Five Armies (at least until his sword snaps), and even get a shot of him chucking his shield. Also this is the only fighting style that makes sense for Thorin to take.
And that's it! Thorin is definitely not 11th level in the Battle of Five Armies, and he dies in that so this is where it ends. I'd say he'd be level 4, possibly level 5 at the beginning of the Hobbit, since he's already fought in the battle of Azanulbizar (and critted Azog), and survived Smaug's attack on Erebor. Let me know what you think, and if you've got any suggestions about what I could have done different I'd love to hear them!
I'm wondering if I should repost these guides on their own thread, as I feel people who aren't in the cult would like to see them too (based on the number of "LotR character X is a [insert D&D class here]" threads). But would that count as spam?
