Just call me a Tolkienite! Also, I might be a BIT biased on the book vs. movie part, as I have not seen the movies. But I am going to reread the books soon. Should I start with the Hobbit or the Silmarilian?
Start with the Hobbit then read the Lord of the Rings themselves. The Silmarillion, while great for established fans of the franchise, is not a good for your first foray into Tolkien's world. It is effectively a companion piece that provides backstory, but presumes you have already read the main novels.

Reread the Silmarillion first. It’s amazing.
Yeah for rereading it’s best to go in canonical order.

That’s what I get for posting at 1:00 a.m. - poor reading comprehension!
I’d still probably go in publication order; but I’m also the kind of person who is aggressively against how Narnia’s publishers default to recommending chronological order.

Oooh what’s everyone’s favourite LotR or Tolkien game? Board game, video game, or LOTRO, doesn’t matter.
Mine is the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. It’s the closest thing to an official Middle Earth game, as it’s licensed and all this other stuff by the movies and actually created in conjunction with their release.
I’m gonna be hated for this but I have to say the god damn lego LotR game

That’s two votes for Lego LotR - it’s in a definitive lead!

I had a really complicated LOTR board game as a kid. I don’t remember what it was called but it took like forever to set up and then me my sister would play a couple turns, then we’d get bored and wander off and the cat would knock it over.

Three! I also just plain love the LEGO sets. Although, I think I gave my sister Gollum.
Pretty new illustrated editions soon to be released! Alas, only 1,000 copies will be made, and the going price will be $1,500 and they’ll likely sell out within seconds. Still, super pretty!
Nice. Except the price tag, which is nightmarish.
why soo expensive!?
Are they doing a Silmarillion version?
a whu?
It’s the prequel to LotR, essentially.
ah, So about the time when the games Shadow Of Mordor & Shadow Of War take place?
Nah, a couple hundred thousand years before that. But it covers all the way up to the first War of the Ring, when Sauron got defingered. It's mostly about god-level elves fighting Sauron's boss, Morgoth, and it's so big it makes the Ring look tiny and inconsequential.
It’s totally epic and romantic and tragic. I love it.
I'm gonna have to look into that, cuz those games just threw me into middle earth and I don't plan to get out.
Be aware that it is very complicated and written exclusively in Olde English. Which is probably why it's not nearly as popular as LotR
'Tis fine, for thineself wishes to learn Victorian Enlish anyhow.
Hark! Wherefore are thou, that trippest into yon river? Hownowest, brown cowest? Confused is the one the searchet the land over for water, that hast found none, until they realized, “Oh yeah. The ocean, and rivers, and lakes and ponds, and rain.” For someone as dumbfounded in intelligence as I could come up with something this stupideth.

To maketh me wisheth that I hath been smart enough to not spendeth every cent in my wallet on random junk. Hark!
There was a really, really, really dumb LotR video game a while back called Lord of the Rings, The Third Age. It was a turn based game like Final Fantasy where you played as group of poorly written characters (with some cringeworthy internal party romance moments) who basically were following the Fellowship around and just kind of being useless in their wake.
The plot could best be described as “bad fanfic”, with random elements like somehow going from following the Fellowship to fighting the Balrog with Gandalf, or fighting that Witch King, or, and this is not a joke, the game ending with you teleporting to the top of Barad-dûr to fight Sauron. It had a multiplayer campaign mode that felt more like “watch the other person play most of the game, then make a few clicks every so often.” It had that classic Final Fantasy problem of “step, step, now you’re in yet another random encounter with things you can easily one-shot.”
That’s all to say it was a hot mess. Still, I found it’s unapologetic “we know this is kind of terrible and we pumped it out to capitalise on the movies’ success” better than whatever nonsense was happening in Shadow of Mordor.

I should buy less Pokémon cards.
I would love to see the art from it; Alan Lee‘s art is fantastic and he does a wonderful job using colour, light, and his general composition to capture the feel of the depicted scenes. Not love to see it enough to justify buying another showcase set of LotR novels, but I’ll look forward to seeing the pictures when they inevitably are released in a more accessible version.

I just come on here and see LotR chaos and everyone being goofballs: Man I love this club so much. You guys are awesome.
On a more serious note, I’m gonna do a LotR game poll once I can get on my computer.
