If you guys lived in Middle Earth, say, ~300 years before Smaug arrived and settled down in his mountain, what would you be? As in, what race, occupation (i guess), stuff like that? What would you be doing?
I'm partly just asking so this thread can get a bit more activity, and also because I don't know a whole lot about the vast expanses of lore in lotr and the Hobbit.
Hmmm… I’d like to say elf, cause they’re my favourite and used to be the one I looked like; I’m mostly Scandinavian and Irish (with some Scottish thrown in and weirdly Italian too, dunno where that came from), and Tolkien based his elves off Norse and Celtic myths so being one of those is the closest you can get to being a Tolkien elf lol, and I’m both. So I naturally have the tall thin pale blonde look going on too. Tho I’ve been working out too much recently so I’ve kinda lost the thin look tbh…
I’d say in terms of personality I’m much more human tho. In fact I’m about as far away from regal, distant, wise, and mysterious as you can get. Heck, I’ve basically got a dwarf personality now that I think about it.
Ok screw I’m gonna combine and say Dunadain as they’re humans with a bit of elf in there, so it combines my personality and look. And one of my favourite things is hiking, bushwhacking, call it what you like. I see massive deep forest with no civilization in sight, I’m going in. I fully intend to become a Park Ranger when I’m older, so I’m literally already a Ranger. And I’ve been using bows, guns, and all forms of weaponry since I was 8 so I’ve got the whole fight expert thing too. Yeah, now that I think about it Dunadain Ranger is definitely what I’m closest too.
Wow that was a long thought process lol. So I’d be a Dunadain Ranger wandering the north beating up bad guys.
The Elves always came of more Germanic than Norse to me. Its a very sleight distinction, but I think its an important one.
I mean, Tolkien actually said that he based them off the elves of the Norse and Celtic myths, who naturally reflected their cultures. He never said anything about German. Everyone just assumes that tall hot blonde blue eyes, yeah we all know what that is. But think. Why would Tolkien base his favourite race ever off the dudes he spent half his life fighting? There’s a conspicuous lack of any German stuff in Tolkien’s good guys cause he hated their guts.

Germanic myths are like Richard Wagner, which was a very obvious influence on Tolkien. I mean, before the Lord of the Rings, there was the Ring Cycle, one of the most famous works of fantasy opera in the world - that would definitely influence him. Norse elves are very very similar to German elves, but less ethereal than their Germanic cousins. Germanic myths are heavily similar to Middle Earth.
Not saying I couldn't be wrong, but Tolkien doesn't seem the sort to boycott German myths because they're incredibly important in English literature and art. We know more about the Germanic myths than the Norse ones at least.
It’s possible, I’m just going off what Tolkien specifically said inspired him.
Fair enough. I try not to read behind Tolkien, because I find a lot of his works like Silmarillion nigh-impossible to read, plus Tolkien scholars are also hard to read, so it just seems like reading a blend of both would rot my brain faster than anything else.
I like the portrayal of orcs. They're existence is miserable and they because the Valar spurned them, they serve the Darkness because they know the no one else will accept them. It's sad but very interesting.

Fair enough, I don’t like a lot of Tolkien scholars too. I just love reading Tolkien’s interviews, letters, stuff like that where he explains all his stuff.

Uh, as far as I recall the Valar never spurned them, they’re just elves that Morgoth turned into orcs and they serve the Darkness cause that’s what they’ve been programmed to do. Very sad and tragic, but there’s nothing about no one else accepting them or Valar spurning them as far as I recall.
I'm a little bit busy crying over the OGL 1.1 to be of much use, but here's a thought: Why don't we say our favourite weapon from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit? I'll start.
The One Ring, the most fearsome weapon ever created that can devastate Middle Earth and has a mind of its own.

Oh yeah, tell me about it. I’m getting annoyed at all the threads of people either pontificating and pretending they’re way smarter then everyone else and backing it up (Caerwyn, for example), and just screaming about it even tho they’re not the ones affected. I’m a member of the Gallant Goblin and I’m their lead writer, which means I’m a YouTuber and a 3rd party writer. I’m actually being directly affected by this as I’m one of the people who it’s being targeted at. And guess what? I’m not surprised and I don’t care. WOTC have made some of the stupidest decisions of their lives over the last year and this just tops it off. F*ck you WOTC, I’m giving all my money to Games Workshop now. Warhammer here I come!
