I'm currently DMing a campaign with a non-binary NPC. I've played a lot of non-binary characters, too, actually.
Anyway, all the players kept saying "him" instead of "them". Every time they do that, I give them a death stare.
Yeah, i understand that. I have a very similar problem with accidently calling someone a pronoun other than them, just due to instinct sorta. But i've been trying to get better at it, usually just using someones name when i can't remember their pronouns.
Ok to much to Quote, long story short I agree with really everything here, yeah why add discrimination when it's a fantasy world made for fun, the only that would be included in a game (maybe) is lore reasons with races (ie. Tiefling having the devils blood, some race having a long time quarrel with another, etc.), other than that don't be throwing in things people have to deal with in the real world like that, unless its in a clearly bad place like Noblepidgeon mentioned.

them also works with any one, they're pronouns for gender neutrality, so they can be used for anyone, not just people who have that as their pronouns (I just used it a bunch and didn't even refer to anyone specific) cuz it's not like let's say he/him where can be blatantly wrong for the person your talking about.
In my settings, there's definitely places that are absolute matriarchies and patriarchies, who simply don't grant the same rights to one gender as they do another. But I don't depict those places very positively, i.e. are things built for PCs to change for the better if they so wish. In places where abundant magic isn't available, same-sex relationships is definitely frowned upon if an heir is needed to succeed a royal line or some kinda business.
Generally though people find plenty of other reasons to hate each other in-setting. Cultural, ancestral, national, economic, states of existence (undead, fiend, etc.), that kinda thing. Of course, I check with my players to see what they're okay or not okay with dealing with themes wise.
True. I mean the Udadrow of Menzoberranzan are depicted in canon as a matriarchy and are not really very nice to guys, so they’re the same way in my version of Out of the Abyss. But they are definitely the exception, not the rule.
I haven't been caught up on FR lore since 4e so I'm woefully out of date, but isn't the Udadrow said to be the most common type of drow? With only the Lorendrow and Avendrow being tiny offshoots. Not that it really matters since I usually run Eberron, but I never got caught up on whatever weird retcon they did with drow.
I’m not sure. They haven’t fully revealed the lore yet. Maybe it’ll be in MMM (Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse).
I meant the exception as compared to the other civilizations built by PC races/species in my version of Faerun. The Udadrow are seen as evil by the rest of Faerun at least in part because they violate the fundamental principle of gender equality (that and the slavery thing). And even that is more of a backstory thing than something that directly affected my players when they played Out of the Abyss.
I'm dming Icespire Peak right now and there's two married Gnome kings, I thought that was pretty sweet :)
We don't usually have a ton of romance in our games, but our dwarfen wizard(ess) had a druid girlfriend who "died" (spoilers) & we have a monk who stopped adventuring and became an Inn Keeper after his boyfriend was eaten by a dragon.
Lesbian princess, Artificer in a homosexual marriage and a non-binary monk in the other section (not sure about their sexual orientation but my group ships them with my male kobold npc)... tbh, any cishet pcs are outliers :)
Is it weird for a creator to love her creation in a romantic way? For instance, one of my characters was literally born out of Caelum's blood, and Caelum and her are together.

That’s not weird. It’s not like a biological child.

That was my thought, but I'm not the best judge of that, so just wanted to check...

I don't think this thread is dead so I will say that I now only play queer characters and I will name all of them.
Mangyou Zhe who was made as zenitsu from demon slayer but gay, though he evolved beyond that
Settoku who is a tracebian(trans-ace-lesbian) in a relationship with an archfey and my current char
Xarma, a manipulative lesbian(this and everything below is unplayed)
Tzin, a panromantic ace plasmoid
Khrys Tallin, a lesbian sorceress
Daemar, an aroace warrior
Nenriki, an aroace warlock of death
Incan Windsor, bi trans masc monk
Halsa, gay dwarf guy with 2 dads
Haessda, a pan genderfluid changeling with a form of DID, katswiri, a gay guy fighter, Belyst, an agender biromantic ace made of hard light, Eumag, a triple A battery(figuratively and litteraly), Sprangare, a bi demigirl, and xarma are all alters
Al, an aroace alchemist
Riley Lyxin, an aroace enby
Osure, an enby into girls that happens to be an elder god
and Khwam Tay, a bigender aro-ace who innocently uses dark magic
as a note, i am a tracebian who is also recipromantic(i only like people if i know that they like me)
Yuri is rather fluid, she's a fey creature so she doesn't have a set preference for male or female but she tends to like males more then females (She'll seduce either, she does not care) but one thing i set her towards was being Polyamorus because she loves everything and everyone and she cant be set in one relationship. She is rather complex to talk about in terms of love and loving because she is just a confusing character in general. As for gender, She looks female but in reality, just like her preference for lovers, it isn't set.
Sinclair is straight with touches of Bi to her, but asexual in general.
I just realized all my current characters are basically the same sexuality I am (with a couple undecided), but I’m fine with that cause it allows them to be open to all sorts of romantic opportunities while also still turning them down if they want to (none of my PCs are really into the hookup scene as a lifestyle or anything).
Oh, and Leander’s a cis male, while my other current characters are all cis females.
Newer/older characters I brought back only recently update
Mali is straight
Barantal is aroace
Shardia is..... Well... Idrk. Tbh,.havent really decided on something like that for her yet, as she wouldnt really ever be seeking for anything like that, choosing to keep herself more duty bound

Thanks to everyone on this thread for posting and keeping it alive! It's so fun to scroll through the new pages that amass every few days!^^
I've practiced vicious mockery too many times in my life.
Can I join the dnd group if it’s online
Come check out the Tavern at the End of the World thread in Adohand’s Kitchen. Lots of fun RP going on there.
Scyria is technically pansexual, but she's a god and never ended up hooking up with anyone...
Caelum is pansexual cause she's a 1500 year old dragon...
I've played a few bi characters IRL, too.
