You know what i love? I love knowing my heritage. Not like ancestry.com percentages, I mean knowing about the relatives who came before me. I don't know if I have Lithuanian blood because I took a test, I know I have Lithuanian blood because my great-grandpa immigrated from there back in 1897. It feels real and amazing to know the story behind my ancestry.
I am Lakota, Malian, and Dutch-English (more specifically, Frisian). In that order. Which makes me Native American, Sub-Saharan African, and Mighty Freakin White. When I was born, it was illegal in many places for my parents to be married, and thus I was born illegally. I am a member of three tribes (one by adoption), and I know only parts of my very complex family history, because by the time I cold research them, many of those who could hold it were dead.
I heard the N word often in my grandparents and great grandparent's houses around the holidays -- usually shouted at the TV while football was on (this was later 60's and early 70's). The first time it was yelled at me was in school, and I looked around for the football player before realizing it was shouted at me. Went to ask my mom, who explained what it meant.
I am a member of the Wykoff family. There is a house in NYC that is on the historic register, built in the 1600's by a couple. Their descendants over the last 400 years have occupied all manner of places and positions and the Wykoff House Association has linked all of us together. I am a native Arizonan, and I have roots recorded there going back to the mid-1800's.
My stepfather was a realtor who did the deals that developed out well over a third of Sedona, Arizona, and I have walked that area known it my whole life, and watched it grow froma place of beauty to a place of commerce and congestion.
Our heritage is one of the single most important parts of our lives. Blood quanta -- the one drop rule, the percentage of ancestry, the gene count -- is all a reflection oof the enduring and underlying racism that we live with every day -- what makes us what we are is the sum of our experiences, and much of those in our youngest life comes from those who raised us, and they determine more of what we are than anything else, though they never fully describe or proscribe what we can become.

I'm not really too keen on revealing IRL details about myself. It should suffice to say that for holocausty reasons, my family's history can't be traced back very far.

Agree entirely. I don't mind learning about family history, but I've always been less focused on where I come from than where I am and where I'm going. All I know is I'm a little bit Jewish and a little bit Italian.

Actually a fun fact about my family: my last name exists only in the U.S. and only among a very small group of people (mostly my extended family). I ran this by a professor who deals with genealogy, and he suggested than the most likely theory is that my surname was twisted by the folks at Ellis Island when my family arrived in the U.S. Incidentally, this makes it hard for me to hide on the internet.
One of my last names is Old French and the other one is German. No idea what my actual family history is, though. I remember Irish and German being two big ones.
