Ok but really, yea, my only RP character, Moonlight, is not mine. I probably could make an OC from that universe if I wanted to though. Also I am writing a book, but it's not done yet so I can't really use those characters.

One of my first characters was the Grim Sweeper who was heavily inspired by Terry Pratchett's Death, so I don't mind characters like that.
You can totally use the characters that you are writing about. It would be a great way to flesh them out, work on their character, and develop them more. I am writing and hoping to publish a comic about several of the characters I have introduced here.
The Grim Sweeper, Dr. Seymour, Wampahoofus, the Kapre, Nornagest, the Pelican, Crotalus, Bob B. Bumble, Ogrulla, Opal, and possibly Billy Brasswood are all characters I roleplay that I am writing or am planning to write about. Sometimes when I come up with a cool character idea I introduce them in a tavern so that I can flesh them out.
You know, in thread building I've typically leaned towards basing them on pop culture. I don't know why, I just do. I've had ideas of a Plants Versus Zombies tavern (scrapped it though since it would kinda be split in half unless I set it to one side, which is only half the fun), a Gravity Falls tavern (cool potential idea, but don't know much about how I would flesh it out as of now), and I've made Tales from Grillby's, which is based on my Undertale obsession. (Not the best of my threads as I made it when I didn't know that much about thread building) The main concept I made myself was the Nexus.

Maybe the Plants Versus Zombies thing could be a forum game?
I do like the idea of a Gravity Falls Tavern. I wonder, would it be better to have the tavern set in Gravity Falls, or in a homebrew location heavily inspired by Gravity Falls? A tavern that has that complicated mystery and paranormal lore would be really cool.
If I were making it by myself without any help from this thread, I probably would just set it in Gravity Falls since I'm too lazy to make a homebrew world. But that's me being lazy, not thinking of which one would be a better choice overall.

Hello! I am a perfectly sane gibberer. Hi! :D I chill on both Adohand's Kitchen and PbP.
Setting it inside Gravity Falls would be totally fine. There is the issue of how do you deal with people trying to play canon characters like Gruncle Stan and Bill Cipher, but similar things have been made here and you could work it on.
I was just thinking that it would be cool to make an ARG type tavern, but that would be super complicated.
It would be cool, but I know that I sure don't have the time to make one right now. I would be up to helping someone make one and I would definitely participate in one, but I have too many creative projects I'm working on.
Basically, it's kinda a term for something that seems simple at first, but there's a series of hidden clues (like ciphers or QR codes) that turns into an entire rabbit hole, typically telling some overarching story.

Here is something interesting that might be fun to think about.
Some brainy writing analyzer guy came up with a way to test if a character is likable. Think of a character from a movie or book that is a likable, well written character and see if they have at least five of these nine characteristics:
Courage
An Unfair Injury
Skill
Funny
Nice
In Danger
Loved by Friends and Family
Hardworking
Obsessed
Let's take Doctor Doofenschmirtz from Phineas and Ferb.
Courage - Not really
An Unfair Injury - Yes, he has very many complicated backstories of terribly unpleasant childhood trauma. That would count
Skill - I'd say yes. He can assemble an incredibly complex inator every day.
Funny - Totally
Nice - Yes. He may call himself a villain, but he is really just a nice guy.
In Danger - Sometimes. He is usually the cause of the danger though.
Loved by Friends and Family - He is loved by Perry the Platypus and his daughter.
Hardworking - Yeah, he works hard to try to conquer the Tri-State Area.
Obsessed - He is definitely obsessed with Tri-State Domination.
Even if you disagree with me on some of those points, you can see that he has enough to explain why he is likable. Fox Mulder, Jack Sparrow, Frodo, and Westley (from Princess Bride) all pass this test as well, I've checked. (Westley actually might fit all the traits. Could he truly be the perfect character?)
As said above, only five of the nine are needed. Having more does not necessarily equate a more likable character.
How does this relate to Roleplay? I thought it would be interesting to see how well some of our own characters fit this. I believe this could be a good way to examine our characters and flesh them out more. If they don't fit, maybe they should be developed more? Keep in mind though that this is meant for books and movies, not roleplay settings. It might not be exactly accurate. Also realize that a character can be well written and not have to be likable, though this mostly applies to villains and side characters. Likable does not equal awesome or cool or stylish.
Okay I agree with this but I think we should put our characters down here and ask other to give them the categories. I'll start.
Grimm. A middle aged man who stalks the sewers underneath grimmshire. He believes that he lives to kill the monsters lurking above and bring grimmshire to its former glory. His friend slinker is a (mostly) constant companion in the dark.

An ARG tavern does sound cool, and I'm open to trying it. Will require a lot of effort but I'm willing to go through that.
