The condition is a genetic defect, so perhaps he wants to go there so he can get the funding to essentially sequence magical DNA. He is an alchemist with a specialty in anatomy (as the magic system runs on the different bodily systems). So he'd be more of a bio-alchemist or maybe an eldritch nutritionist...
