Yesterday our school gave us an AI-generated story and asked us to analyze it for a quiz...
This is the second time they've done something like this
Sheesh.
I feel like the cheeky answer is, "There is nothing to analyze. It was spit out by a program that merely tried to replicate the writings of other authors. So there is no inherent symbolism tied to anything because the LLM never meant to have any deeper meaning. It just did stuff that looked right. You may as well ask me to analyze the symbolism of an elephant's painting, but at least the elephant actually has a brain that's doing something with it so there'd be more meaning."
Or even cheekier, pull out your phone, feed the story into it, and use ChatGPT to analyze it. :P
Unfortunately we can't use phones during school (and it is a grade). They very clearly went into ChatGPT and went "generate me a story that has 7 character types" (because that's what we're learning about, we had to assign them).
Also @Wes (Vitus I see why you do this now, I was wondering that when we don't have pings): Not really, it was all pretty generic which is to be expected from AI slop. (Plus it was just inconsistent and didn't even make sense in some places.)
On another note, hoping to get the mafia thread up during the weekend

Yep. Agree with Vitus. I've had these problems in classes (less so with analyzing AI so much as using it for work), where they're letting us use the AI. The argument -> The AI is bad because it's not original. Theoretically, the AI has the ability to learn, right? But its knowledge is only based on human knowledge, since we created it. So at a deep level, the AI isn't actually making things up -- it's just stringing together words in the way someone's wrote them. That's what the difference is between humans and AI. One of them can make all the sh*t it wants up, while the other is copying the former.
Dunno. My History teacher's been unfazed so far.
Also, PJ, I know homeschooling's been labeled as bad for the whole missing-out-on-society thing, but I'd get to wake up whenever and do whatever I wanted. Honestly, I wouldn't mind. You're lucky :)

Yeah, I mean it’s true that homeschooling loses the social aspect of school, but honestly a lot of school kids strike me as boring and uninterested (besides the nerds, ofc) and I prefer the social culture of my homeschooling and unschooling friends and circles
Homeschooling has several flaws, but the US education system is in such trouble right now that homeschooling just is better. In a better world where schools function better and rework their educational systems it makes total sense to go to a public school, but it’s just not that world rn
(Also worth noting that many parents can’t stay home and have to work, forcing them into public school, so even though I think homeschooling is better many can’t do it. And ofc if everyone did it it would be less nice

Yup, definitely. Dunno though - I’ve met plenty of people who are interested in school that aren’t just the nerds. I feel like homeschooling just doesn’t help the most to prepare for later in life (and all the talking to people that requires). The US school system sucks, though.

Homeschoolers still have friends, go to events, and talk to tons of people. It’s not like we’re just sitting inside all the time 24/7. Outside of the social aspect, school hardly prepares you for later in life imo. Idk, if you take things like social anxiety and being introverted out of the question then I think most homeschoolers are just as socially developed as school kids. It’s really hard to compare though, homeschooling could be very different in your area compared to mine, regulation is different, and just culture in general
really they’re both just options and different ways of learning, my wording on schools was probably a little harsh in the first reply I did. This is kind of a complex thing with a billion different pros and cons to each, and neither is really better or worse, it just depends one what you want and your philosophy

Ain't that the truth. I grew up on hand me down beholders from my cousin Drazzmorg the Lich.
Howdy, Vitus! How've you been?
Yo!
I've been doing alright. Got something part-time going while on the main search. (And like the coworkers/work.) Also was recently added to my parish's pastoral council so getting acquainted with that.
Putting together another D&D group too, sent out chats to some groups I'm in at my local parish and also at other ones. So looking forward to our first one-shot.

How are things for you?
That's cool to hear! What sort of work do you do as part of the pastoral council? Did you need any church training beforehand?
I've successfully moved to Scotland and I now live on a small island off the north coast, Orkney. I haven't been able to play Dnd since coming here but I'd like to try to continue some of my old companions online and I found out some of the kids here like to play so I may be able to join them.

It's kind of getting the pulse of the parish essentially.
So far I've been to one meeting with another coming up. General thing was checking some things and getting summaries from other committees. I decided to be the pastoral council representative with the Faith Formation group but their monthly meeting got cancelled this week, however a normal duty would be getting a summary of how they're doing. (What's going good. What could be better. How could the parish support them?) Also will be at a welcoming table in the Narthex from time to time.
Nice on the move. Just a place you wanted to live or got family there? (Both?) I'll also admit the reason I know where Orkney is comes from a board game my father has called Brittania (IIRC) that goes from the fall of Rome to the Norman invasion over Britain and you get points for controlling various territories. (Instead of playing one group you instead play a variety of groups throughout the years. So the person that controls the Romans, then Romano British, is later playing the Norwegians after the last remnants of Rome have inevitably fallen for example.)
Hope you're able to get in with the kids for D&D. (Remember to speak their bussin' Ohio language, fr fr.) And for online play with buddies I find Owlbear Rodeo is a nice VTT to use.
