In the year 1770, Captain Cook claimed Australia for Great Britain and in 1788, it began to be used as a penal colony. (2)Between the years 1788-1868, more than 160,000 criminals were exiled to work building the colony. Although Britain was a fairly prosperous nation, they had to exile their offenders because their prisons were too full. (3)Strangely, most of the convicts were sent away for petty theft. By 1869, ships full of criminals stopped coming and those left began forming their own nation. They drafted a constitution to earn independence without war, and on January 1, 1901, Queen Victoria approved their desire to splitfrom Britain and continue governing as a colony no more.
