It's mostly storage and doing some things. Not really a need to go down there much. (Though I've got my laptop setup down there for now. Will probably move it again at some point.) With some area rugs (and they're decent-sized ones) and some tables it's quite usable.
And while it's never flooded, if it ever did then carpets beyond area rugs getting all moldy would be a hassle.

It is interesting to me the waffle > pancake preference.
I do use a wafflemaker now and then, but its main benefit is that it's easier for a smaller batch IMO.
