As the new year dawns, weather across the lands of Ragesia takes a sudden chill turn. The sky darkens with the shades of oncoming winter, and worry rises as regular channels of communication between nations suddenly cease. Slowly, throughout the lands claimed by the Ragesian Empire, rumors spread between isolated villages, traveling by foot and horse and word of mouth, rumors that Drakus Coaltongue, the immortal emperor whose armies conquered every land he set his gaze upon, has fallen in a distant land to the west. How the tyrant was defeated is unknown, but if it is true, everyone knows that a war is coming. The generals of Emperor Coaltongue will strike for control, oppressed peoples will rise up in rebellion, and dangers once held in check only by fear of the immortal emperor will bring doom to the world.
Those in power are preparing for the coming conflict, readying fervent armies and powerful weapons and subtle, deceptive plots, but two questions burn in their minds: who killed the immortal Emperor Coaltongue; and what has become of the artifact that would let a man rule the world? Who has the Torch of the Burning Sky?
Driven out of their home by the dogs of war, the heroes head for a distant safe haven, a magic academy named Lyceum, which has sent up a rallying cry for those who wish to resist the warmongers. Sent on missions by the leaders of Lyceum, the heroes form alliances to build an army, and they discover strange secrets that underlie the conflict. As the war reaches a climax, powerful magic superweapons threaten to scorch the world or sunder reality and leave nothing but nightmares.
Recruiting Guidelines
Looking for 4 players:
Comfortable with difficult war topics: torture, genocide, suicide, and war crimes.
Able to handle a serious tone. There is a time for levity or comic relief, but there is a war on.
Familiar and experienced with the DnD 5E ruleset. Sorry, no beginners in this one please.
The Campaign has a set story, though not to say you can't go off the rails. If all goes according to plan however, here's some of what you can expect:
Escaping a besieged city
Navigating the dangers of an eternally burning forest
Saving the Resistance from complete destruction
Allying nations and free city-states
Penetrating a conquered castle where the immortal emperor was slain to pursue the facts around his demise
Launch a rescue mission into the depths of a frozen fortress
Defend your home from invaders
Lead armies in a gruesome final battle against the Ragesian Empire
Adventure types include:
Spying/scouting/infiltration missions
Courier missions
Strike missions
Urban street-to-street fighting throughout occupied cities
Seeking alliances and forging treaties
Searching for powerful artifacts
Large scale battles
Character Guidelines
The War of the Burning Player's Guide is free to acquire from here. Feel free to use the information available in it to create your characters.
They are required to be from the city of Gate Pass, where our adventure will begin.
Character ability scores will be generated with point-buy. The adventure begins at 3rd Level.
Character races should be geared towards standard humanoids: humans, orc, elf, half-human, gnome, etc...If you want your character to be a plasmoid space pirate on the run from authorities, this probably isn't the campaign for it.
Include a bit of character fluff in your application. I'm not looking for a lot. You don't need a full backstory. Just a general sketch of what you plan your character to be. You can describe them in terms of other fictional characters if you want, give a few sentences about their personality, or just elaborate on what you imagine their role being in the party.
Hook
It is New Year’s eve in the free city-state of Gate Pass. Located in the mountain pass which separates two hostile nations, Ragesia and Shahalesti, Gate Pass has been neutral since the end of their last war, but now from Ragesia a new menace comes for the city.
By now, every magic-user in Gate Pass knows of the Scourge. The Emperor of Ragesia died barely a month ago, and in a move to cement herself as the next emperor of Ragesia, Leska, leader of the Ragesian inquisitors, has decreed that all disloyal users of magic, arcane or divine, are to be tracked down and killed, to prevent future threats to the empire. To carry out Leska’s command, the inquisitors, clerics specialized in countermagic, travel with military escorts to the borders of Ragesia. Their first target is Gate Pass, its neutrality long viewed as an insult to the nation’s honor. Those who resist them will have to face the searing power of the Ragesian Empire.
An entire army marches for Gate Pass, and the people of the city fear that they will not be able to resist the might of the Ragesian military. The city leaders are bowing under pressure, and have barred the exit from the city, intending to welcome the inquisitors that come with the army, for they foolishly hope that the Ragesians will reward their cooperation with mercy.
A local resistance movement, devoted to keeping both the Ragesians and the Shahalesti out of the city, has gathered vital military intelligence, and they need messengers to deliver the information to allies at a distant wizard’s school. With all their strongest warriors preparing to hold back the Ragesian assault, this vital mission falls to a party of desperate heroes.
The Ragesian army is nearly at Gate Pass’s doorstep, so time is short. The war is about to begin.
1. You mentioned the adventure starts at 3rd level. What level does it go to?
2. How often do plan on posting / want us to post?
3. Are the class options from the player guide required? I'm wondering if, for example, a warlock would have to be Pact of the Primordial or if the standard PHB options like Fiendlock or GOOlock would still be okay.
1) I've purchased enough of the adventures to take the party up to level 10. If PbP works out and people stick around, there's further content I can get to go up to level 20.
2) Once a day would be ideal, with enough material in the post to keep things moving.
‘ too much of a bio to fit here. call me Bananer for short, I’m one of the forum’s resident insane things. I’m a nongender Therian (look it up!) and also a silver dragon (not my kintype, just a me thing.) I’m a rogue and wizard, and if you want more info on me, PM me, or ask someone else. I’m well known.
Do you allow multiclassing? And if so, can I start out with a multiclass?

Alright. I think I've got the perfect character for this. So his name is Goop and he's a plasmoid space pirate on the run from the authorities... //jk jk
Though for serious ideas, got a couple in mind with a Half-Elf Fiendlock or Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster. (Also some other ideas on the backburner. Possibly a Half-Orc Oath of the Ancient Paladin depending on if Tasha's optional racial ASIs is okay to swap +1 CON for +1 CHAR)
One (hopefully) last question: What's your stance of using DDB homebrew for replicating official material we don't own on DDB? Example: Homebrewing a copy of Word of Radiance from Xanathar's Guide to Everything. (So no original homebrew like My_Spell_Of_Overpowered_Nonsense. Just official material.) My ideas are easy enough to do with or without. Just figure I should know my options on the little things.
Summary of the ideas. (and notes for myself)
Tendilius Mondhaven Paxaramus Half-Elf Warlock, The Fiend (Pact of the Tome) Background: Sage Point Buy + Racials for 8/16/14/11/10/16 (STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHAR) Warlock Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand Pact of the Tome Cantrips: Shocking Grasp, Mold Earth, (Guidance/something_else) Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Book of Ancient Secrets (Find Familiar, Unseen Servant / something_else) Warlock Spells: Scorching Ray, Hellish Rebuke, (Misty Step, Cloud of Daggers) / (something_else) Basic Idea of Backstory and Character: Figure he's a scholar of history. Knows about Coaltongue's previous attempt to rule Gate Pass and isn't a fan of what the records show happened under Coaltongue's military regime in the city. Doesn't like the current city's decision to capitulate when history shows previous resistance was successful. For his personality, generally amicable but also determined to get goals accomplished and color between the lines if necessary, but takes agreements seriously. (Thinking a Lawful Neutral type of alignment.) Thought on Role in the Party: Leaning towards a blaster in combat. Being able to use that Eldritch Blast and unload spell slots. (Booyah to Fireball at lv5.) Also get some utility for rituals via Book of Ancient Secrets and the extra Pact of the Tome cantrips. Plus with high charisma, can be useful in persuading NPCs to side with the party.
Eima Blainken Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster Background: Urchin Point Buy + Racials: 8/16/12/16/13/10 (STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHAR) //maybe swap the CON and WIS? still thinking or even put the 13 to CHAR for deception Rogue Proficiencies: Acrobatics, Perception, Deception, one_more Trickster Cantrips: Mage Hand, 2_more (need to think on this, probably optimize around party) Spells: Silent Image, Sleep, Disguise Self / somthing_else Basic Idea of Backstory and Character: Your stereotypical orphaned rogue. Lost his parents as a kid. Grew up on the streets. (How tragic.) But now he sees an opportunity to make a name for himself. Bonding with a newfound family (the party) he's determined to help them get through whatever trouble comes. Whether that's getting out of Gates Pass or making stealthy he's there. Death to Ragesia. (And who knows, maybe there's money.) Possibly a Neutral-Good type alignment. Not sure. Thought on Role in the Party: Useful scout. With urchin background would have some skills to lend since the campaign has a lot of urban settings described. Planning on using the racial Minor Illusion cantrip to create cover he can bonus-action hide behind to get advantage for Sneak Attack.
Alright. I think I've got the perfect character for this. So his name is Goop and he's a plasmoid space pirate on the run from the authorities... //jk jk
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tasha's book and the stuff in it is allowed for this campaign.
Using homebrew to replicate official content is also fine, I definitely understand not wanting to drop $$$ on digital content that you technically don't even own.
As for your character ideas, either of those look great to me. I'm sure you could put together a good Half-Orc Paladin as well. Just lemme know which one you land on. Welcome aboard!

First preference would be the Warlock. (Been eyeing the build/general personality for a while. First two times I tried to run him fizzled out at levels 2 and 1. So finally getting Book of Ancient secrets will be a nice change of pace.) But figure I should have backup ideas too in case of death / party composition.
Looks like it’s me, Aaggie, Vitus, and Cyber once they make a character?

Sounds about right! I'm going to drop my character idea and elaborate on it once I get on a computer:
A tiefling rogue (scout)/artificer (alchemist). He technically fits the support archetype, but he tends to get overconfidently reckless and throw himself into dangerous situations sometimes.
