It would be great when building a character if it popped up a message warning you that duplicate proficiencies had been selected. For example, when building a rogue, you might select a proficiency in Deception when selecting your class proficiencies. However later when selecting a background, you might select "Criminal" background which grants you a proficiency in "Deception." Some sort of message warning you that you have duplicate proficiencies and suggesting you go back to choose a new proficiency at the Class stage would be useful, especially to new players. Also greying out options that your character already has or can no longer choose based on your other selections would be a useful guide.
That's a great idea!
Hear hear!
Agree fully.
In some cases, with race it can cause triple selection, e.g. Elf perception, Half Orc Intimidation.
Not sure if this has been raised [this thread is looong & I do weird things like eat and sleep ;) ]
Could the number of character slots be increased in Beta test?
Reason: To test the permutations in the builder we have to try different combinations. With 6 slots, a player buts in some live characters, only leaving a few slots for testing.

Well, being that this is a beta, all slots should be for testing. ; )
The staff does not wish to offer anything that will be taken away after the beta ends. If they were to expand upon the amount of character slots, these would be removed at a later date. The six current slots will remain available after launch under the free account tier.
Equipment could do with a filter option Magical/Mundane. To generate a character the standard equipment list is used far more than the full magic item listing.
Spells shows all spells but keeps going back to the top (1st 1st level) and then offers show more. Difficult to gen mid - high level characters. Suggest scrolling with a locked header panel so player can also see number of spells still available.
It's due to those being the only archetypes in the SRD, EEC and Basic Rules aka the free stuff Wizards has put out. Those are the only documents being referenced during the beta stage.
I only see the first archetype for each class, was this on purpose, or because you guys were lazy with the beta?
For the beta, only the rules and options provided in the D&D 5th edition SRD , D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, Elemental Evil Companion are available in Beyond. Once the full platform launches later this summer, the core rule books and others will be available for purchase, and the content within will be available for those that purchase, or have access through a DM's subscription.
As has been mentioned multiple times in the Release notes and the 'Read me First' threads - Beyond only has the SRD and Basic Rules data, this is the rules that can be used, for free. All additional archtypes and data will be available after launch for those that purchase the correct 'books' or have access through another's subscription.
I just made a Quick Build character, Lightfoot halfling rogue. It put Expertise in a skill in which my character isn't proficient. And it gave me a longbow, saying I was proficient in it, but rogues in fact are not.
I apologize if someone's already mentioned this, but there's only one Paladin oath available at the moment.
Currently limited to the official content legally available free from WotC (Unearthed Arcana doesn't count as official, for some reason).
Unearthed Arcana is publically released playtest material, rather than officially part of the game.
If/when any of that material makes it to being formally published, it will be included.
I know that quite a few people use content from UA, so it would be nice if it was added as something like official homebrew from WotC.
Thanks for clarifying that for me, and thanks for suggesting that WotC release UA as homebrew on here.
Thank you both for responding, but I was specifically referring to how the Oath of the Ancients and the Oath of Vengeance aren't available. Since they're both in the PHB, I assume they're considered "core." ;)

For SRD and Basic Rules it is intended the free material available on the WotC website.
Because the playtest material is freely available, they're only releasing the material that Wizards makes available for free: Basic D&D, the Player's Companion to Elemental Evil, and a small handful of others. For example, there's only one feat available, the stupid grappler feat, because it's the only one that's been released for free. Once D&D Beyond gets through the playtest and is rolling for realsies, they'll unlock the good stuff, for those who pay a fee.
Tried out character builder for the 1st time. Nice, though am looking forward to full suite of selections (all backgrounds, feats, etc.); would like to see standard feats so Variant Human build can be maximized.
Also, not sure if I messed up, but seemed like after selecting standard starting gear, I still didn't have equipment auto-populated into character sheet.
Made a human wizard--should I have unlimited number of known 1st level spells or not?

Once you select the gear you want to carry, you have to determine which gear is equipped, clicking on the "equip" button.
The wizard, by rule, at 1st level has 6 1st-level-spells known in the spellbook.

Just a note on wizards' spellbooks. We will end up adding a "suggested known spells" number, but at the end of the day the wizard isn't capped due to being able to conceivably add any spell he comes across while adventuring to his book. Therefore, we have to keep it wide open.
The "suggested known" will help with newer players, and we'll add that.
1) Choosing two spells with the feature Additional Magical secret, these are given as spells you can cast at will, but they should be just known bard spells which consume spell slots.
2) The Font of Inspiration feature does not seem to reset the Bardic Inspiration after a short rest.
Hi, when viewing the character sheets, I think the overall look of the character-sheet screen would improve dramatically by extending the background image to the bottom of the page (I am talking about the image of the plant and architecture behind the information boxes), similar to what you did for the background image on the compendium page. Having an image behind the info boxes makes it easier on the eyes and easier to read (and looks better), but when you scroll down the page the info boxes toward the bottom are much harder to look at and read because the background is completely white.
So I've only been on it for a little bit but on the character creator and these are my thoughts:
health should be included after the stat page to ensure that players who roll stats know how it's added up
it's a character creator, you should be able to change your decisions on class/race without restarting the character creator and making a new one
your skills from your background are given, not selected
tool proficiencies should only give you the type you can have (different lists for gaming sets, instruments, tools, etc.)
It may be reaching a little but under the notes having short little examples of everything so they have a basis of how to build a character
make the manage equipment window movable, people will want to see the suggested starting equipment when they are first starting or give them the option to start with it and add the gold from the background to it and have a secondary purchasing screen.
But I also want to say that the way the classes are set up is awesome and i can't wait to see what else y'all add to it. Overall it's a phenomenal product so far. Thanks!!!

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of

I'm on the DM's Guild: click here
Also, halflings have disadvantage with longbows because of their size.
Howdy you specify a weapon is offhand?

Found few issues for the bard class:

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks!
