Since today was the premier of the Critical Role new campaign, DDB has officially partnered with Critical Role. I'm sure you'll see more Critical Role material here soon. ;)
That is awesome to hear! Super excited to see what is to come on this front. Anything you are able to share with us at this point (He asked pretty sure he already knows the answer)
I’m a little bit weirded out about this to be honest.
This is Matt Mercer’s home brew getting front-and-center treatment on what is ostensibly ‘the official’ digital D&D source. And a button to enable critical role content in the character builder just seems... weirdly specific.
Is this just to make do until there is a decent home brew marketplace?
In many ways, Critical Role is the unofficial marketing engine of 5th edition - there are many people who are playing 5e because of the show.
Add in that the recent development drive has been on homebrew races and subclasses and I would estimate that this wasn't too much work to complete and will massively benefit both D&D Beyond and Critical Role.
Sure, but the Blood Hunter is still a home brew class (which Curse have said we’re not having).
Shrug, it’s not a big deal.
In terms of DDB, I see it more as third party than homebrew. In relationship to the DDB site and tools, I think of homebrew as stuff that users enter and publish through the homebrew tools. Third party is/would be added by staff (either DDB or the third part outfit), and not be part of the homebrew collection/tools. If my distinctions are correct (which they may not be), then the appearance of the Blood Hunter doesn't contradict the "we don't plan to accommodate homebrew classes" line.
Even the inclusion of third party stuff in a position of primacy is a bit off though. I mean it’s not bad, I’d love to see Kobold Press stuff here and what have you, but it’s alongside all the other classes like it’s official.
Perhaps there could be a banner a the top like ‘ask your DM...’? WotC even do that with some of their own stuff now and again where it’s a bit unusual, if I recall correctly.
BadEye has mentioned multiple times in the past that we (the staff) would take on the work of entering full, thrid party classes that appeared to be very popular with the community. With our sponsorship of CR, the Blood Hunter was a natural candidate for this process to begin.
The navigation and segregation of various types (official, 3rd Party, Homebrew) will definitely evolve over time as we add more data to the platform.

They've said that we won't be able to make our own. They've also suggested that they might add specific popular third-party classes, using the Blood Hunter as an example.

Might I recommend a brief disclaimer at the top of the class entry to note that it is unofficial and not AL legal. I could see newer players being confused since it is listed with all of the other official classes.
Hmm...I was hoping this was a sign that homebrew classes were going to become a thing eventually, but apparently that's not the case from what I'm reading in this thread. Any hope on Unearthed Arcana making its way in as a toggle ("vetted" classes by someone on the team I suppose, similar to the Critical Role toggle)?

Homebrew subclasses are planned, but not homebrew full classes. The DDB staff have expressed an interest in including Unearthed Arcana eventually. No timeline has been offered for that, but it's on the radar. I'm guessing that over time the toggles will increase to include UA, third party sources (either by source or all 3rd party) and the like.
Has anyone else noticed the new Blood Hunter Class that the Staff have launched on DDB?
Hopefully, we might see a changelog for it soon but it is exciting as we might start to see more UA and 3rd party comments coming very soon!

If the campaign setting book shows up in the marketplace I may have a heart attack. But, you know, the good kind.

Can we get a post about this to the change log? I'm just surprised there is no official post on this.
