Quick point of clarification - when purchasing content (say, Curse of Strahd) am I getting access to a PDF of the adventure? Or is the content simply being uploaded into DND beyond? I assume there would be some access to the content contained in the book, but I'm not sure exactly how that will manifest itself in DND beyond. Can anyone help clarify things for me?

There will be no PDF. Compendium information you purchase will be searchable just as the current compendium is. If you purchase the full digital book or portions such as classes, spells, monsters, etc., those items will be accessible through the other tools. When the iOS and Android apps become available, all purchased content will be available offline.

No PDFs, no. The content will be accessible through the Compendium tab, as the Basic Rules are now, as well as integrated into the tools, depending upon what level of access you buy.
As Koren and A_Stray_cat mentioned, "books" that are purchased will have their own page in the Compendium section. That page will be a giant clickable Table of Contents, allowing you to navigate to chapters and sub headings within those chapters. Once in a Chapter page, it is very much like the preview image in the thread linked above.
Though keep your eyes open for tomorrow's announcement, which should make the whole subscription and sharing topic clearer. :)
Did I miss an announcement?

Any better word on when custom races, classes, subclasses, and feats will be possible?
I won't really ever give dates until we know things for sure (this is software development and talking about dates too early is always a bad idea).
I can, however, share that those things are on the extremely short list of priorities to incorporate. i.e. We are working on those as soon as this launch thing is done.
Thanks!
P.S. We will not be doing homebrew core classes to start for a variety of reasons. A couple of the more prominent being that the existing core classes (especially once you add in the mystic and artificer) cover so many of the bases already and the complexity of anticipating what players could do with homebrew core classes is immense. If we see strong community feedback that core class homebrew is worth that effort, we will certainly respond to the feedback accordingly.
I have Fantasy Grounds and the hard backs. What's the backup plan when/if Curse, Twitch or WotC stops supporting the online tools? Will I get credit for my lost investment?

BadEye might have a more specific answer, but right now, I strongly suspect that the answer will be something along the lines of, "The Curse team will make sure you have your content in some format."
That's not a promise and I don't work for Curse.
Here's the thing though, no successful company PLANS to fail. They won't have spent time, effort and money on, "What happens if our company goes bust?"
It's just not a thing.
What I can tell you is Curse is owned by Twitch, who are owned by Amazon, so if D&D Beyond is ceased at some point in the future, it will likely be a commercial decision to do so, which means it can be done in a controlled manner that ensures the customers can be looked after in some manner.
That sounds okay. I am invested in Amazon Prime, so it sounds safe and sane for now. The other common concern is for offline use. With Fantasy Grounds and the Hard backs I have offline access ability. This investment is mainly an online commitment, great for newer players and subscribers. When are the online integration tools going to be available for online twitch casting?

I do web development, too, so I get the timeline thing. I usually have some arbitrary date, but I understand how often that gets missed, even with the best of intentions.
I want to poke at that last paragraph, a bit. You call out the Mystic and Artificer, which are two important bits. The other would be the latest UA Ranger, which my group has taken as a wholesale swap with the PHB Ranger. If UA content will be available, that's a big, big deal. Last I'd read, it was in the "still nailing down" stage. Has something changed?
I do use Eberron, which is where I'm really wanting custom classes, feats, and races. The existing UA Eberron stuff isn't great (it was early in 5E, so not a big complaint), but workable. I've got home brew Dragonmark rules that I use, though. Really, where I'm going is: I don't mind doing all the data entry, myself, but will I be able to run an Eberron game using the DDB tools? We're about halfway done with Curse of Strahd, which means I don't need those features until, probably, the first of the year.
In the meantime, I do have a favored soul and a UA Ranger in the group (both as written in UA). Is that something that DDB will handle at release, within a couple months, 4Q, or probably not for this campaign?

I can confirm we will include the mystic, artificer, and revised ranger at some point in the near future. We'll share more details on that when we can.
When a book is purchased, we are essentially purchasing a digital version of the book that can be read like any other ebook, correct? Along with the content integration for character sheets and magical items and such.
Even if i can only access the book on DDB, it would be nice to be able to flip through the books I purchase here that I don't own physically.

In addition to the builder integration, the compendium integration will function much like it is now, but with all the content you've purchased included.

Just an FYI:
So now you can purchase just magic items or monsters from the adventures if you like.

I play a medium amount of board games.
