Yup, I've tried all the things anyone's mentioned thus far and sadly, no images
I wish I knew how to troubleshoot you more. I was growing more and more frustrated and mentioned it to the creator of that AboveVTT extension. He asked me to send some screenshots of my browser console seeing the errors and asked me what was showing up in these other different places in the console, which I'll be honest is well above my tech knowledge though I was able to follow what he was asking for. He said to me "What's the Ratings field of your site cookie? Mine is empty but yours is thousands of bytes long. That may be the problem." I've been shouting from the rooftops since then about this issue. I had found a quick workaround that was basically 3 extra clicks and a CTRL+SHIFT+R to fix it, but I'd have to do it on every single dndbeyond webpage. But then Jay_Lane posted about that other browser extension that lets you block part of or the entirety of a website's cookie.
Once I had this added to the EditThisCookie block list, this issue disappeared for me. I can have some time this weekend to try and help you troubleshoot this to see if this is related or just some other issue entirely. PM me tomorrow and I'll send you my discord so we can talk.
I just added written instructions to the post for people having issues with the video. Hope it fixes it for you.
YAY!
[EDIT]
I did update my signature to say Jay_Lane's solution is still a workaround, not the fix for this issue. Hopefully it continues to keep this issue from frustrating my use of this website.
Hi everyone. Thanks to all for the in-depth analysis of the problem. Does anyone know why this started happening in the last month or so? DDB was working fine for me on Chrome for years and all of sudden, no custom portraits. I wish I had more computer knowledge but I really don't feel comfortable messing around with my settings too much.
Having the same issue--can't load portraits, and backdrops are solid white. When I try to pick a backdrop all the tiles are just broken links, "GoS Cover backdrop preview", etc.
This literally fixed every issue I've been having with DNDBeyond... fixed my dice rolling speed, fixed the no portraits, and no backgrounds as well--had to log out and log back in, but other than that everything is working fine now.

Technically it didn't start last month, the problem started far earlier than that. But its clear that it takes time for the ratings cookie to get to a size that the servers start to error and not send you pictures. For example, my son has never seen this issue at all, but he doesn't use the forums much.
And it isn't really isolated to custom portraits; it can happen on other ones, but it isn't as common.
Thanks Nthal and Mairondil for the info. I tried Jay_Lane's workaround and unfortunately the problem still persists. I'm starting to think it must be my laptop. Perhaps a recent update?

It takes going into the dev tools on the browser to get more precise answers on what else could be awry. For example, another cookie could be a problem. Switching browsers can help, but that isn't ideal I realize.
Hello, I ran into this issue as well. For what it's worth, I'm a player and not a DM; I only have a paid account to have more character slots. I've never uploaded anything to D&D Beyond aside from character portraits, and I've never upvoted anything. This is, in fact, my first time commenting on the forums at all for that matter, but I've also been experiencing this issue for about a week.
The only thing that solved the issue was getting the EditThisCookie extension, and following the steps outlined by the kind folks among the userbase who have been troubleshooting it (thank you guys so much!). I did have a little issue carrying it out, though, as it didn't work at first no matter what I did, following the steps exactly. I eventually figured out it's not enough to click "Hard Reload" when you bring up the F12 menu, you need to click "Empty Cache and Hard Reload".
After blocking the rating cookie and clicking this, I finally got my portraits back. I'm not sure if this is the case for everybody, but if anyone's been following the EditThisCookie tutorial and not having any luck as I was, you might try that instead and see if anything changes. Hope this helps, and thanks again to everyone who's been working on this.
Tried the cookie thing (.dndbeyond ratings.... block or erase)... Still missing images after refreshing/reloading page.
Just tried erasing Microsoft Edge cache/cookies again... The result is worse than before, with over 60% of character portraits and other image icons missing or unable to load.
Microsoft Edge Version 100.0.1185.39 (Official build) (64-bit) for Microsoft Surface tablet Windows 10 S (safe mode).

If you haven't tried both Hard reload is usually required and you may have to select "Empty Cache and Hard Reload" if a straight hard reload doesn't work. I've added the below image the post people are linking to so people know what they are looking for. Usually a final step if these don't work is logging out and back in.
It should look like the following in chrome:
If that all fails it could be a separate cause are there any errors in your dev console on the pages you are missing images?
Also I see you've been using the site for awhile how many banner cookies do you have? They should be ddbSiteBanner:######## If you have a ton of them they might be overflowing the header as well. One gets made for every banner ever dismissed - I don't know why they stick around so long sometimes.
The allowed header size is ~8000 each of these banners cookie takes up 54. My ratings cookie takes up ~4000 so as soon as that ratings cookie shows up it instantly overflows the headers for me due to the size of the rest of the data. Generally you'll want to look for repetitive or very large.
You can find cookie sizes in the dev console (F12). Application tab. Under storage in the left hand menu -> expand cookies -> click dndbeyond
Here's my feedback. I've been trying to figure out what was going on for about a month, and finally came across this forum. After reading through the whole thing, I tried each solution as it had been given and responded to with positive feedback.
Clearing my chache and cookies did not help.
Hard resets/logging out/restarting my browser, did help, but for less than one minute before failing again. ○ Incognito mode did help, but that's not a real solution.
I eventually made my way to Jay Lane's solution, and initially, it made everything somehow worse! ○ Character sheets wouldn't load at all, and the page wouldn't be named in my browser tabs. ○ My my-characters page suffered the same problem, within not even names or a clickable link to my character pages showing up—Just white.
I wasn't sure if I had done it wrong, but I had to figure out how to undo what I did. Retrying a combination of all of the suggested solutions a few times, it eventually worked, and is continuing to work (30 minutes as of this post) all of my images are back.
A possibly important note (I'm not sure, as it was hard to keep track of everything) is that I haven't used the upvote system more than maybe... 5 times at most, ever.
THANKYOU Jay_Lane.
It may be prudent to update your post to include which boxes should be checked when creating a rule to block the Ratings cookie. I experimented with combinations on checked and unchecked boxes for the Ratings cookie before some solution-combo started working and my issues were fixed.

Thanks for pointing that out I missed that in the written instructions =). I've added it now.
The blocking the tracking cookie fix worked for me for about two days, now I'm back to portraits not loading :'(
This was first posted a month ago and sadly still hasn't been officially addressed :/
Disabling cache didn't work for me, race portraits aren't loading in character creation--custom portraits aren't loading (though they did at first when I blocked the tracking cookie), and it's seemingly quite random what imagines do and don't load O_o

Double check the ratings cookie you have blocked is blocked for Any value. It sounds like it's value may have changed and caused it to come back. You may have checked an extra box when blocking the cookie. You can check this by clicking the extention, then clicking the wrench in the top right to go to settings, in the left menu click blocked cookies. If it has anything other than "any" in the value column you'll have to repeat the steps.
If you have to repeat the steps when you click block it should have domain and name checked with the last box unchecked :

It's possible that, after some of the recent changes to the site, clearing the cache has become as important as dealing with the Ratings cookie.
