I'm working on a homebrew creature over the past few days and I've been trying to upload both a Small and Large Avatar and it's just not working. There's no indicator that the images have either been successful or failed to upload until I go to the creature's page itself and still see the default avatar. I've tried waiting 15 minutes after selecting the .jpg/.png images to give it some opportunity to upload if there is something that happens in the background that is not visible. Still nothing. They are small size files. 108KB for the Large Avatar and 36KB for the Small Avatar so I don't think file size is an issue. It would be really nice if there was some kind of progress bar or any kind of indicator that the upload is actually working/happening.
Hello momscookies, are you trying to add both images at the same time? Please try adding one, selecting save, and then adding the other (and saving again).
I think I finally figured it out! You can't upload images that have transparency! I had a jpg from google images but once I saved it again as another jpg with another name, it warned me about losing the transparency, and it worked! Strange that it didn't initially work considering jpgs don't have transparency. Must have thought it did.

I'd be curious to know more about this. I swear I've uploaded PNG files that had transparency as monster or PC avatars.
Only once have I run into an issue where the uploaded image caused repeated errors on the homebrew item. Trying to use a different image didn't fix it. Copying the homebrew item didn't fix it. Copying the homebrew item and trying a different image didn't fix it. I ended up recreating the homebrew item from scratch and used the exact same PNG file and that homebrew item is just fine. The three homebrew items (the original and the two copies) are currently deleted with as much of the text changed to "DO NOT UNDELETE. DO NOT RESTORE. FRUSTRATION AND HEADACHES AWAIT ANY WHO EVER TOUCH THIS HOMEBREW ITEM" just to remind myself to never touch those things again. I've never had a problem with the recreation from scratch.
2 Years later from last reply and this is still an issue, creating a version of the normal drow for my party to go up against as minions to a modified beholder boss, and no matter what I do, i cannot get the "Gaahmite Drow" to accept the image I want to use.
What time type are they? How big are they (both in bits & in dimensions)? Do they have transparent backgrounds? Are you attempting to add both the small and large avatars at the same time?
After about two hours of trying different things, i found a website that resizes jpgs, and resized the picture to 256x256 pixel and a copy to 1000x1000 pixels, and uploading the two seperate sized ones made it work. Not sure why, but at least its fixed.
Just for reference the original was 1200x800 i believe, and around 2 MB file size, jpg, no transparency.
Anyone else figured out the secret sauce to this? I've tried uploading images individually, resizing them, and make sure the homebrew item is private. No dice. It seems totally insane to me that this process is so broken lol
edit: had to clear dnd beyond cookies and then do the preceeding steps (resize, upload one at a time). I'll leave this here for the next poor soul who arrived via googling

Published homebrew can't have an image (it is just legally safer for DDB that way). I think it should work for private homebrew, but not sure.
All of my homebrew creations are "Private."

Yes, they have to be uploaded individually. If you try to save both images at the same time it doesn’t work.

Thanks to NumbersGame, I think that's the one. If you resize the images to exactly 256x256 and 1000x1000, it works.
