Yeah, and it's not just homebrew. Last night a player of mine just bought four Unbreakable Arrows from Xanathar's, and those are in the D&D Beyond database as a type of longbow. There's no way to give them a quantity in the inventory—I have to add four separate ones, and my player will have to keep track of them manually. Sloppy.
Can confirm this bug is still going, if it could be looked into and fixed (or at least give us an update if it's something that might be very complicated in the back end so we know) it'd be greatly appreciated. My ranger likes to toy with arrows and different finishes, so being able to make my own custom ammunition to reflect her growth in this field would be great. :'(
Just want to add thanks to the D&D Beyond team for all they do; there's no denying this makes DnD sessions so much fun, simpler and welcoming for newer players. Looking forwards to continue using this for many years to come. :)
Custom items won't integrate into the character builder as ammunition, which means we are limited to official enchanted ammunition, which is pretty bad. That coupled with the fact that we can't create homebrew equipment, only magic items, really limits what you can use D&D Beyond for in a homebrew setting.
I'm using potion items in place of homebrew ammunition, but you can't mark potions as equipped, so nothing is integrated into the math
Create custom item (not a magic item) to indicate the special ammo and detail what it does etc. You can then have a single line to describe the ammo in your inventory and can specify and adjust quantity.
Create custom attack for attacks that use the ammo so you have the math all factored in.
As for custom non-magic equipment you can reskin current equipment. Want to make a katana instead of a sword? Do so. Take a sword, customise it and rename it changing bonuses. Or just make a custom attack and item for it.
Don't blame the system just because you don't know how to use it.
"Why have a functioning and easy to use system when you can just cobble it all together yourself with these 7 simple steps?"
Cool, it worked. Once. If this item ever shows up again or for another character sheet, I do the entire process again instead of just looking it up in my homebrew creations.
I can't share this with my campaign of 5 players, I can't store this in my homebrew creations list, I can't get easy feedback in the magic items homebrew section.
I know how to use the system, I just blame it because it doesn't have all the functionality that I think is necessary for what it advertises.

To make the arrow and custom attack took all of like 20 seconds. How damn lazy are your players? It's not a difficult thing to do. If you had paper and pencil it would take longer.
It's being looked into so just be patient*. It's not a priority because you can just do it yourself*. It's still easier and more efficient than paper and pencil.
Everything this site actually advertises to give you it provides. There will be limitations. I swear to god some of you peeps (not you specifically) won't be happy until you get a system where you just click one button and the site magically does everything, even playing the campaign, for you. Some things you will be required to do yourself. It takes mere seconds, not a big deal, be happy with what you have which is already superior to pretty much everything else out there.
Yo moderators, wanna escalate this issue? what's going on? it should be a simple programmable fix, why is this not caught. Hire me, I'd be happy to fix the homebrew issues I've come across. The whole point of homebrew is to create things that you can PROPERLY use for your own game. I want to create a series of arrows (ammunition) that have specific abilities. It's easy to do but it takes time. and that just detracts from the game if the player has to sit there and type/write out the new arrows they've purchased or keep track on paper as to how many of each arrow they have. Your argument of 'laziness' is a mute point because it's not ABOUT laziness, it's about a good DM not wanting to break their players character and stop the game just so they can add an item to the game. Not trying to hate but jeez, this is such a minor bug to fix that is OBVIOUSLY a pretty major flaw for SEVERAL users. What is currently setup is an annoying workaround, not a truly functional method. It would literally take an hour TOPS for a single dev to fix this issue.

I can assure you that it's not as simple as you think, otherwise the system would already have been changed to allow this.

I wish we could make this easier. However, for the moment, I create a "wonderous item" with 20 charges, for a quiver of fire arrows for example.
I then set it to have 20 charges, never recharges (consumable). When I add it to their inventory, I reduce the charges to the number of arrows they have. Sucks for weight calculation, but that's a small issue in the scheme of things.
You can copy arrows of slaying, and they have the ammunition property when used. I wish they just had a base weapon type of "ammunition" or an item of type "ammunition".
This issue has been mentioned in more than one dev update video I believe. They stated that this is definitely on the roadmap. However, because it's a complex issue, it will take a while for this to be fixed.
As a workaround, you could create a homebrew weapon with a certain number of charges. Each charge would represent a single piece of homebrew ammunition. As they are consumed, remove the charges. It's not great, but it does serve as a temporary placeholder.
Bump, because I'm running into this too. Will have to experiment with the 3 different work around above, and see which one is least painful.
Devs, I know it's more complicated than it looks from the outside, but it's also not impossible, right? Please let us homebrew ammunition & mundane equipment.
I assume it won't let you continue until you pick a base weapon, huh?
Looking at the Arrow of Slaying they have magic item type as weapon but left the base weapon section blank. I'll go ahead and throw this up as a bug. Thanks for the report!
Do bug reports normally stick around for over a year? :\
I know not everything is on the roadmap, and that I might be missing it if it is on the roadmap, but do we have any idea when this will be addressed? Or at least, where it falls in terms of priority?

Unfortunately, they do not give any timelines (e.g. specific release dates) for anything. I do not see this on the roadmap either. This could mean that this could be fixed tomorrow or within the next 5 years (or never). Hopefully this will get resolved at some point.

so an entire year and we STILL can't create homebrew ammunition types? Come on...
You can just create custom items or even custom attacks and it's easy. Just use that? I'd rather the devs focus on things actually important.

2+ months later, still an issue...
January 2019, the bug still there.
BUMP!
Still an issue.
Check my homebrew creations: items, monsters, feats, subclasses and races! There is also a dragonborn subrace that doesn't show on search for some reason.
