I don't expect it to be functional for quite some time. Tasha's will be adding options to modify some core parts of the game mechanics. DDB still hasn't figured out blessings or carry weight. I wouldn't be surprised if this book launches as compendium only.
I wonder if they will release it at a lower price then? Could be a way to at least get some income from the book then charge later on for the stuff they couldn't get to work.
I doubt it as they didnt do this for ERftLW but I would be glad to be wrong.
When Depot mentioned Compendium Only, they were talking about D&D Beyond's edition always available in "compendium format". I think digital editions with all the bells and whistles integrated into DDB go for around $29.99. Compendium editions go for $19.99 but aren't integrated into the broader D&D Beyond platform, so you just have the text, and you'd have to home-brew what you want piecemeal if you wanted to use anything on say a character sheet. But you can always take your prior compendium purchase, and pay the difference thereby upgrading it to a full digital edition integrated into DDB.
I don't see why the work won't exist in some form by release date. If you're concerned about it being "buggy", you can just buy the compendium and upgrade it when whatever problems may be there are resolved.
The point is the assertion that "it's available for pre order everywhere but here" is not the case. The physical copy is available for pre-order. The big three digital license holders, DnDBeyond, Roll20, and FantasyGrounds do not have it available for digital pre-order, presumably yet. I don't believe anyone else has the rights to digitally publish 5e. The only other big storefront I can think of is DriveThru, but they do pdf and so you won't find official WotC 5e books available in that format.
Why no pre-order. I too haven't seen any official statement saying "Wizards is blocking or not authorizing pre-orders" ... that would be a weird official statement for any licensee to make, at least worded with that tone. My speculation:
1.) Maybe the licensees have agreed to hold off on pre-orders until Celebration (this weekend), that would still put it in roughly the two month timeframe consumers are accustomed.
2.) If the digital providers are somehow "behind" the usual time table, it could be because there's a few major rules options, and the providers need to maintain the core RAW in PHB (for people who won't be buying into Tasha's) and allow for a toggle or branch to enable the more "unbound" legacy and class variant content. It might be a "bigger lift" developmentally than prior content excluding the initial rule sets (although this is arguably more complicated because the initial rules were digitally developed in a relative vacuum whereas Tasha's has to allow innovation but also maintain the prior rules). I imagine, at some point in producing a digital edition, WotC is seen a sort of "proof" to make sure the edition meets their expectation. Given there are some key feature changes, more so than past, and the need for the platform to maintain the old RAW, that presentation or review may take a little longer than past editions.
My bottom line, I don't really care when Tasha's goes online for pre-order, or if I have to wait a little longer past Nov 15 to access it on DDB. I'm going to grab the hardcopy anyway, and then decide (probably affirmatively from what I've seen) whether I want to get the digital edition added to my collection. When I do make that purchase I want to make sure the content that affects character generation works seamlessly on DDB. That's more important to me than my chance to say "first" when I get it and be faced with bugs and errors that could have been identified and addressed if the developers had the time to thoroughly pressure test the book's impact on its system.
I think #2 is likely the reason. I do not think its weird to be transparent with why something is not available yet...if WotC is saying waiting for Celebration they could use it as an opportunity to promote the event. If its #2 its an opportunity to get ahead of the issue from a technical/PR standpoint and say that they are assessing if they can deliver on the goods by Nov. 15th or not. If they can't its better to let people know sooner rather than later. The closer it gets to Nov. 15th with no information the worse it will be if they have to announce they cannot deliver.
Either way by not addressing it only leaves people to speculate and potentially share incorrect information which is almost never the better option.
Good for you can afford to buy both a digital and hard copy...not everyone has that luxury. I will likely only purchase on DnD Beyond as I have not invested in the hard copy for several books at this point. I am hopeful they can get it done before then but knowing either way would be appreciated.
I'm going for a more relaxed posture. The book doesn't come out till Nov 17, so the literal two month window starts today even though people have been clamoring "can I haz preorder burger?" for weeks. I can reasonably expect the announcement being held off at the request of the license holder for a big a community event like D&D Celebration, timed at the two month mark and showcasing some of the new content in play. And I also appreciate that D&D Beyond isn't allowed to just speak freely of the work they're doing or will be doing on an unreleased work because they are a licensee not WotC.
If over the weekend, still no digital announcement, there's reason for _slight_ concern. If you look at at the D&D Beyond Upcoming Features track you'll see that Tasha's isn't on there, but elements essential to it like Class Feature Variants are. There wasn't a DevTalk today, but there will be one presumably next Thursday and I'm sure the status and timing of pre-orders on this book will be a question asked at a volume that they'd probably have to address it.
I don't think there's a lot of misinformation going on, I think there's a lot of speculation being consciously put out as such.

No. Wizards hasn't released the digital pre-order lock yet.
and the following isn't directed *just* at you, so please don't take it personally?
Can people stop asking about Tasha's on Beyond because it will be released for pre-order when it is released for pre-order.

Trying to get your physical content on Beyond is like going to Microsoft and saying "I have a physical Playstation disk, give me a digital Xbox version!"
To be fair, it's been two weeks from when this thread cooled off till "the question" was asked. Not everyone knows about the Dev updates, and the dissemination of those updates beyond the "slides" (which don't really say much) within this forum community are more an effort of community members (I think Sedge) than D&D Beyond direct. To long time consumers of DDB the absence of pre-order this far out strikes some as odd, so I think the questions is understandable. I welcome it more than "Why can't I get a hardcopy too when I buy a DDB edition. That's not fair" thing.
I pre-ordered the hardcopy from my local game store. I"m going to give it a read through, and then see how it's implemented on here, before I decide whether it's worth opening up to the players in my game through my Beyond account. So I probably wouldn't be buying a DDB edition or selections from it till like January anyway.

Yeah this....
Communication around the lack of a pre-order is super simple....for people who consume all the social media of DnD Beyond.
Those who don't see any mention of it on the Marketplace or see an article that explains the delay. So naturally they go to the forum to look for it. Maybe even try to search for it (Good luck...forum searching is always terrible).
They see a thread about the topic...Oh great! I can ask my question. They, being a normal person, do not read all 36 pages of the forum and only look back at the previous comments.
Oh look its been a couple of weeks since someone has talked about it...maybe there is more information!
They ask. The answers range from helpful (YouTube link to the exact conversation from Dev Talk!) to less than helpful (NO ITS NOT OUT YET DUMMY!)
The asker is frustrated. The answers show frustration from people asking.
What is the solution?
Just put something out on the front page or marketplace and be done with it.
The latest that was shared in the Dev update from last week is that Wizards has not announced a date for digital pre-orders. Probably nothing worth a conspiracy theory or anything, I’m sure we can buy it soon enough.

Though I'm starting to get worried. I was one of the "HEY, WOTC DOESN'T ALLOW PREORDER" but there's only 1 month left unil the book comes out

ain't gonna lie, I've hit the "okay, now I'm concerned" camp too.

Experience D&D in a way that you’ve never seen before with Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden releasing in game stores, digitally, and everywhere on September 15, 2020.
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything will be available on D&D Beyond upon release, but digital pre-orders for the product are not yet available. We will share all pre-order details - including the special D&D Beyond pre-order perks - on all of our social channels as soon as they become available. Thank you!

I get the impression that there will be no digital preorders and folks will just have to wait for day 1 to purchase their digibooks. Probably won’t be flashy, blinky borders or dice either.

Especially when it raises a faint question mark over future development of this platform. I say this as a leg-end purchaser and paid subscriber.
I think they just want to promote physical orders with the current climate. It's not available for pre-order on any digital VTTs either
It's more of a WotC problem. The wording in the official website:
Notice that unlike other books, the official website doesn't mention dndbeyond or Roll20
To quote from page 3
Yes, that's still going on
(Which is why I am worried)
