Oh good, so the abomination known as DanDwiki is going to overflow onto WotC's newest cash grab? Or will there be some measure of review for home brew content being posted, before it's made available to subscribers?
Right, and if I'm Master Tier I can share with my gaming group... We are talking in group text right now and we are all going in on the books... so, problem solved. I had a little WTH freak out there, but once I remembered about the Master Tier (via io9's interview today with Adam [ http://io9.gizmodo.com/how-dungeons-dragons-new-app-will-make-role-playing-e-1797020591 ] lol ) I got ahold of everyone and it's not a concern now.
Reminder, everyone, don't forget about the Master Tier subscription like I did...lol if you have a gaming group everyone can go in together and get these books for cheap. We're getting all three (3) for $10 apiece :) #gaminggroupforthewin
Absolutely the way to do it. I'll be discussing it all with my group as well, and we might swap accounts over time since we take turns DMing. It all works out in the wash if you have a good group, I think.
Exactly... I feel bad for those who don't have a good gaming group, though... a lot of this will be out of pocket :/

"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

Whats the point of the subscription if i still have to buy the books, again?
The Hero Tier at $2.99/ month is intended primarily for players. It removes ads on the site, allows players to create an unlimited number of characters, and add publicly-shared homebrew content to your collection to use within the toolset.
The Master Tier at $5.99/ month is intended primarily for Dungeon Masters and full groups. It grants all the benefits of the Hero Tier, and also allows a DM to share all her unlocked official content with other players within a campaign - so content does not have to be unlocked by every player.

1. Curse develops and operates D&D Beyond, not WotC.
I *really* hope when this ends up shooting Wizards in the foot, they adjust their pricing accordingly instead of viewing DnDBeyond as a failure and scrapping it. Say $10-15 for the books, with the content being included for free in the subscription. There's a lot of good stuff here - I like the subscription pricing, and will probably take advantage of the reduced price for the books during the first week launch - but I can certainly understand people having a problem with the book pricing, as it shows complete ignorance of the current market.
You do realize that Wizards of the Coast isn't the developer behind D&D Beyond, don't you? Curse has zero incentive to offer their work, development, and services for free to consumers of a different retailer. If not for the intellectual property license alone, they have transcribed, coded, and hyperlinked their way through each of the core books to provide the experience digitally. That work alone is worth charging for. WotC publishes physical books - Curse develops D&D Beyond.
My apologies - I thought this was a fiat from on high via WotC as the price structuring is similar to other digital platforms Wizards works with. This makes me slightly less worried about the future viability of DnDBeyond - so long as the pricing isn't being mandated by Wizards, then Curse should be able to adjust prices accordingly. $30 for book access is ridiculous - the $20 first week isn't as bad, given the tools incorporated. And Curse should really look into working with Wizards to offer discount codes with physical book purchases.
I understand the need to recoup expenses, but seriously, someone screwed the pooch on this one. About the only way I see anyone paying the currently announced prices for the books is if they *only* use the site for running games.
Prices are pretty reasonable for the sub tiers. Book unlock prices are less then the physical books as well so thats nice for a digital copy of the reference materials (i cant think of a way for you guys to be able to verify that someone owns the physical books anyways so thats a dumb question).
If anything this might impede on physical book sales since this is portable and as long as the digital content gets released at the same time as physical release... i might not want to get both anyone like I planned. Maybe. Theres something gratifying about a book.
Seeing WotC track record of digital tools I cannot buy the books again. I paid print, paid Fantasy Grounds and Roll20 (over $350us). I am not going to pay again for another tool. Why do I need to pay again to look at the options for a pally on the computer. Just let me buy a PDF and use it in any tool I want.
I know if you buy a VHS tape of a movie you dont get the DVD for free but i bught the DVD and i get recharged everytime i put it in as different DVD player.
Want me to buy the books for D&D beyond, then buy back my books on Fantasy Grounds.
Can I just take a moment to give a thank you to the whole development team?
I have been here, lurking but here, since dndbeyond opened and the improvements that have been made and the tools that are now available through all y'all's hard work are amazing!

This, TBH, I mostly access all my books in the kindle, I haven't tried to browse this from the kindle, I will give it a try later, but if I can read it moderately reasonably I would have zero incentive to buy physical books, if one granted discount on the other, I might consider it, but as is, It doesn't make much sense to buy a book twice.
To be clear, I mean my general book consumption habits, I buy kindle if available, otherwise the physical version. But having an option of digital vs physical, digital will always win for me.
Will there be a subscription plan to use the content without having to buy the digital books? I already own the books physically, I don't need to own them twice. I just want to use the service and I wouldn't mind being on a subscription for it (kind of like MMO subs).

Well, this was one of the objectives of creating a digital toolset. To replace all the pens and papers while tabletop gaming with friends. No more book flipping for rules and monsters, as all data would be in the compendium. This will become more essential upon Twitch integration, per the Stream of Annihilation trailer posted June 2nd. Games would then use 'only' the site for operations.
Will all of the hardcover books (including Tales of the Yawning Portal) be available to purchase at launch?

So has pricing for the "class packages" not been determined yet? Or should I expect that to also be $30?
So first week Volo's Guide will be $30?
