I'm still confused. forgive me cause this has probably been explained but if i don't purchase the digital copy of the players handbook i won't be able to create characters correct? i'd need access to all of the class/race/equipment information from the players handbook to create a character? i'm not sure i understand what i'm able to do with or without a subscription if i don't purchase digital copies of some of the books.
Hi deadjean,
so, if you do not purchase anything in DDB, you can still use everything here with the free material provided.
To expand classes, backgrounds, feats you need to purchase the source material (PHB, MM, SCAG, VOLO...)
The subscriptions are to expand some features of DDB. The Hero Tier gets you unlimited character slots, removes ads, and gets you access to the homebrew community. The Master Tier gets you everything of the Hero Tier plus sharing purchased material (digital books) within a campaign with your players (you players can share as well) More info on the subscriptions here:
You will still be able to incorporate material (like subclasses) from the PHB, etc., into your private homebrew and utilize them that way unless something has changed.

Update news for you - the Curse team have heard feedback from people in this thread, and others, and have worked on agreeing a way of allowing partial purchase of adventure modules.
This means, if you already own the physical book for the adventure, you could decide to just purchase the monsters or items from the adventure, for use with D&D Beyond. :)
I feel like this has been addressed (maybe) but searches aren't returning anything for me. Do we know what the payment options will be? example, will Paypal be an option? Only saved CC? Amazon? other?

Hartless indicated that paypal will for sure be an option. Not sure about amazon...
If it is, I can just ask for Amazon gift cards this Christmas. :)
If it is, I'm cashing in my Bing rewards for Amazon gift cards. Probably have a free $20 of points saved.
Ooh! I can get $130 in Amazon gift cards from Bing rewards.
TIL that people use Bing. At all.
That makes two of us. TIL Microsoft pays people to use Bing.
Completely unrelated to Bing - I don't remember seeing if there will be a gifting option for credit with DnDB. I'm a big fan of random acts of kindness, so it would be cool to have the ability to do that on the site. I'm sure there are some players out there who wouldn't mind gifting their DM as well. Would anyone by chance know if this is something planned for launch or on the horizon?

Is there any word on UA somehow being used with this site? What about Adventure League content (several creatures have appeared in AL supplements but no where else, items too)?

Yes! That's amazingly good news! Thanks to the developers for listening and quickly implementing the suggestion!

Love the idea of the first week sale where the core books are all discounted. Will there be other sales in the future for books?
I use summon instrument to summon my kettle drum, hold it overhead like Donkey Kong, and chuck it at the nearest kobold.
