Ula sips at the drink and hums appreciatively at the strong combination of flavors. "Very nice! Just the right amount of kick -- thank you, Halfroc."
After spending a little more time down in the tavern, maybe taking in another fight while finishing off the Dwarven Hammer, Ula approaches the barkeep to ask for the key to the room they've rented. It has been an unusual day, and they should probably get some rest before anything even more exciting happens.
Assuming there are no issues with getting the key and finding the room, Ula will retire for the evening (making sure to admire the new luster of their hair when they look in the mirror) with plans to go to the Exploration House in the morning.
(I would say let's stay at 40, I guess. If we're saying he starts with 17/40, Syd then spends one hit die during his short rest for 7 hp healed.) Syd will also purchase a Brewmosa for 4 more hp.(-4 cp)
(All right, sorry for the delay, but I had to have my 6 year old help me come up with a fancy new NPC to give Syd a challenge and to fill in the town w/wayward travellers. Bojovnik is a Githzerai Way of the Astral Self Monk, 7th level. He's currently at 33 HP following his first combat, which I rolled a few damage and recovery dice to come up with. Syd's at 28, correct? We came up with a great backstory for him as well, but that's for another time. Suffice to say, it involves spelljammer ships, a celestial reindeer, and, of course, a magical portal.)
After polishing off a delightfully refreshing brewmosa and taking a well-deserved respite in his room, Syd strolls back down to the main tavern area to scope out the competition and ponder what his next match-up will bring. Upon seeing his new acquaintance return following a successful and lucrative first bout, Halfroc navigates over to Syd and hops on the nearest stool to chat. "So, Mr. Orc, you're looking full of vigour once again! I knew that brewmosa would pep you up. How are you feeling, my large friend? Up for another fracas? The crowd would sure love to see you back down there, dealing out some punishment. After your bombastic match with that wood elf monk last week, I thought we could kick that up a notch this time. Someone a little more exotic, a little more seasoned, give you a proper challenge, eh? He's banged up a bit from his first match, but he's always rarin' to go. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, he doesn't ever seem rarin' to do anything, but he's a helluva fighter. Check him out."
Halfroc points across the room, where Syd can see a strange looking figure with a yellow-green complexion, gaunt, angular features, and dark brown hair bound up in a top knot. Perched on a barstool, his eyes are closed while he adjusts the wraps on his hands and forearms. Dressed in a simple tunic and loose pants, the man is tranquil, even amidst the chaotic energy and screaming of the crowd as the current match plays out in the pit below. Though this placid warrior is rail thin, his lanky arms are lithe and sinewy. The packed crowd seems to part around him, likely due to either discomfort with his unusal appearance or knowledge of his impressive martial prowess.
Ula sips at the drink and hums appreciatively at the strong combination of flavors. "Very nice! Just the right amount of kick -- thank you, Halfroc."

"Ha, fantastic, knew you'd enjoy it! The place might not look like much and the food may not be winning any blue ribbons, but when it comes to the most fantastical alcoholic beverages to either put you on or get you off your ass, nowhere in Haven can match the Greasy Weasel!" Halfroc slaps you on the back with a big grin on his face, takes a long, self-satisfied pull on his pipe, and wanders off through the crowd. You can make out some faint coughing as he goes, his passage marked by the occasional puff of wispy smoke rising out of the crowd.
When you approach the barkeep about getting the key to your room, he looks you over skeptically at first and his mouth drops into a frown. After putting down the visibly dirty pint glass he had been wiping out, the harried man wanders over to the back of the bar and shuffles through a small stack of papers. He looks back over his shoulder quickly, opens a drawer, grabs something, then returns to the bar and slaps a large iron key down on in front of you. "Lucky number 13, the boss must like you. Breakfast is from sun up until it's gone. It's not great, but it's not terrible either. Tavern's rooms are almost full, so I wouldn't dilly dally too long up there if you're the hungry type. Hope you liked the drink, I poured that one myself." He grunts and turns to another patron that has staggered up to the bar, eager to be overserved.

Syd eyeballs his potential opponent with some trepidation. He hadn't ever met a monk personally until last week, but he'd heard they don't fight fair, using fingers and elbows and earlobes and whatnot to make unexpected, devastating strikes. Last week's bout definitely lived up to that reputation. Well, I'm here to learn and let off steam, he thinks, better to get the snot beat out of me here than out on the battlefield somewhere. At least here, Halfroc will get someone to revive me... I hope.
Syd strides into the ring, once again laying to the side his greatsword, and then stretching and popping his joints a bit, preparing.
(Quick question, the dice roller result for your Initiative is showing it as 1d20+7 w/a result of 3+7=10, while displaying 17. There's clearly something messed up w/how it's being displayed, so what did you actually use as the roll? It should be 1d20+2 I think.)
Somehow sensing that it is time for his match, the unusual figure opens his eyes, revealing jet black irises. He fixes his gaze squarely on Syd, observing him closely as he unfolds his long, spidery limbs and slides gracefully from the barstool. Gliding as much as walking, the lanky warrior moves to the pit and gracefully lowers himself to the ground below. His feet barely seem to touch the dirt as he approached Syd, leaving virtually no footprints.
"It will be my privilege to match skill with you in the ring this evening. I am Bojovnik. As unusual as the collection of inhabitants of Haven is, you and I may still be exceptional among them. In any case, I observed your earlier match and I believe you will be a worthy opponent." Bojovnik extends his hand toward Syd, somewhat tentatively, as he is unsure of the custom's adoption in orc culture.
Bojovnik's movements as the match begins are languid, but Syd gets the sense that this is a practiced deception. Likely an attempt to draw out his opponent into overplaying their hand early in the fight. Bojovnik's eyes glitter like opals as he carefully observes the orc, circling cautiously.
Syd looks at his new opponent with interest. He accepts the monk's handshake, and grins, "Hiya Bojovnik, I'm Syd. May the best orc win!"
He hops from one foot to the other, staying limber, until the signal to begin. He ponders that last time, he took some serious blows before allowing his rage to take control. He was going to save the remainder of his berserker energy until the final bout, but this opponent looks too unpredictable to take that chance, so he beats his chest gorilla-style and slaps his own face a few time to get the adrenaline going. (Bonus action rage on).
He will repeat his opening from the last bout, hoping to catch the monk unprepared with a full-on bullrush, ending with a headbutt.

Bojovnik smiles briefly at Syd's comment, then turns and walks to his place to await the start of the fight. He makes a formal bow, hands tented in front of his chest, then assumes a relaxed stance. The fluidity of his movement is borderline hypnotic to most, but it does nothing to dampen the rage of his opponent.
The fight commences and Syd flies forward, but Bojovnik deftly sidesteps and his fists snap like lightning, three attempted strikes in rapid succession.
Bojovnik - attack vs. Syd: 15, damage (unarmed strike): 10 Extra Attack - attack vs. Syd: 20, damage (unarmed strike): 10 Bonus Action - attack vs. Syd: 20, damage (unarmed strike): 6

Syd is stunned, having missed terribly on his first attack, and then being whallopped twice as he sailed past the mark. This is not going like he hoped, at all. He will turn and leap at the monk, trying to knock him off balance while pummeling his chest.

The frustration, and some fear, knot in Syd's stomach. This opponent's skill is probably more than a match for his own. Still, he will give it his best effort. He will feint with a left hook, and if the monk dodges right, he will find Syd's fist there waiting for him.

(Yeah, hopefully things will swing back your way during the fight. My luck w/DM rolls has been consistently bad, so these high rolls are a surprise for me!)
Another massive swing from Syd, another masterful weave from the githzerai. Bojovnik seems to be in top form this evening, so he wants to test his mettle. As such, he will deliver two kicks to Syd's thighs, aiming for the hamstring in an attempt to weaken the orc's stance, but he will then attempt to break off from close quarters after doing so.

Perhaps Syd is awakened by the damage he has taken! Neither blow lands, the first kick catching awkwardly and twisting the monk's leg for 2 points of damage. Fortunately, he is able to use his incredible body awareness and the motion of his second kick to right himself, and then to focus his ki and escape.

Upon seeing the barkeep’s skeptical frown, Ula straightens slightly. Thanks to years of practice they are quickly able to quell the defensive retort that automatically rises within them, and instead manage what they hope is a charming smile. Picking up the iron key, they call out a quick, “Thank you,” and turn to leave. As an afterthought they add, “And the drink was delicious, thanks!” but since the barkeep had already turned to assist other patrons, they are unsure if he hears them.
Ula shrugs and continues on to their room. “Lucky number 13, eh?” They’ve been running particularly low on luck for a while now, but who knows? Maybe this unexpected detour into Haven will be the change they need. But first, sleep... It's been a long day.

(No worries, it's a busy time of the year for everyone, posting and playing will almost certainly drop off a bit. Also, Ula could do a retrospective Insight on the barkeep if they're worried about what he was thinking ;-)
Despite the barkeep's remark about their room being lucky, number 13 appears to be wholly unremarkable. There is a small chest with a lock that you find works with your room key, along with a roughly made bed with worn sheets, an end table, and a chair. A lamp sits atop a small, three-drawer dresser that also looks like it's seen better days. Nothing is in disrepair or overtly offensive in its condition, but the items are all mismatched and very well-used. Most importantly, the door is solid and the locks seems secure.

Ula will definitely do a retroactive insight check! 3
As they think back on the various interactions they had downstairs, Ula starts unpacking some of their items into the chest, preparing to settle in here for at least a few days. They will double and triple check that both the chest and the door are locked securely before sliding the iron key onto a leather cord that they wear around their neck. Then they kick off their boots, slip a dagger under their pillow just in case, and lay back with a sigh.
They try to fall asleep quickly, but feel somewhat restless. There aren't many people that they're sorry to leave behind, but there are a few. Will Kali worry about me? Or Lavena? Ula tosses and turns for a while, trying to get comfortable on the (probably not particularly comfortable) bed.
Ula can't make out the meaning behind the barkeep's attitude toward them. Maybe he wasn't fond of half-elves, maybe he was just busy? In any case, he didn't seem to be overly bothered, probably best to brush it off.
Otherwise, Ula is able to pass the night uneventfully and wake the next morning well-rested, despite the lumpy bed.
(For @crawf_25, the barkeep has just seen too many folks trying to scam rooms during the chaos of the fight nights. He's seen just about every type of person wander into the Greasy Weasel and as long as they're paying good coin, he has no prejudices. Compliments toward the drinks he makes certainly don't hurt, though! Halfroc isn't the most organized businessman and relies on his staff to keep things running smoothly. Make no mistake, though, Halfroc is quite shrewd and ever mindful of the finances. Also, I'm looking forward to learning more about Ula and their back story :-)
(I would say it is periodically active. Typically, new characters might reference how they might have arrived in Haven, then try to figure out where they are and what they can do. The lore channel has information on some of the locations and NPCs around. You can start your character wherever you like and the DMs will RP whatever interactions you have there. Players often drop off this thread when an adventure starts.)
It's still active. It's just usually busier when there isn't an active adventure going on. The hope is that as we get more players and more DMs it'll reach a tipping point where some adventures are ending while others are starting up and this downtime thread will be a place where PCs can hang out, tell their stories and interact with other PCs not in an adventure.
Ula sips at the drink and hums appreciatively at the strong combination of flavors. "Very nice! Just the right amount of kick -- thank you, Halfroc."

Make no mistake, though, Halfroc is quite shrewd and ever mindful of the finances. Also, I'm looking forward to learning more about Ula and their back story :-)

Is this thread no longer active?
