"I didn't see a sign, but I could walk you to it. Thank you for the parchment, and the pledge, I may take you up on it.". Asledin scrawls a few words on the parchment and returns the quill. "It looks like a have a few minutes before the food is up, I will get this pinned up and return shortly.". Asledin slides off the stool and shoulders his pack. He then grabs the flyer and heads out of the tavern. On his way, he casts a quick glance at the occupants of the card table. Once outside, he is forced to stop to let his eyes adjust to the brightness of the morning. Asledin glances at the sun, looks toward the sign board, then glances back at the sun. He stares at the sun as long as he can take it, then looks away with a frown and a slow shake of his head. Asledin walks over to the sign board, mumbling to himself. Along the way, he takes a quick glance at the sun. At the board he seeks and finds an unused pin and attaches his flyer to a empty space on the board. After satisfying himself that it was secure, he heads back to the tavern. Apon entry to the tavern, Asledin steals another look at the card players, then drops his pack in front of the stool he was using and sits down. Asledin's foot returns to the top of the pack. He looks over to Theran and asks, "Who is Casandra? She a Lady, Baroness, Mayor perhaps?". Asledin frowns and points up and away from himself and says, "What is....the sun, it....". Asledin shakes his head and lowers his hand. "Never mind."
Theran gives Asledin a long look, before answering his question. There is concern on her face and she delivers her answer in a measured pace, watching Asledin all the while. "Cassandra is an eccentric woman, but brilliant. I'm sure you've seen the bizarre machine atop on of the tall, nearby buildings. That's her work, part of her efforts to deal with the planar problem. She is relentless when it comes to finding solutions to interesting problems and she has little patience for interference when in the middle of one of her ... explorations. There are a few like her in Haven, with powerful magic and intellect to match." Theran pauses and hesitates, but asks, "Are you okay? You look a bit out of sorts."
(I tried to post for you on the Bulletin Board, but apparently I don't have the permissions to do that. I like your message, though!)
Asledin was leaning on his arms, forearms flat against the bar top, when Theran started looking at him. As she started to speak to him, he had raised himself to an upright position, palms down, arms straight, and was returning her gaze. As he straightened up his facial expression changed from passive to alert, then to mild consternation. When Theran finished with her question about his wellbeing, Asledin blinked and looked a little puzzled. Asledin glanced to each side, then quickly behind himself, before looking back at Theran. "I am fine...eh...thanks. Say uh, how 'bout I get started on that ale while I wait for breakfast?"
Theran now regards Asledin sympathetically, having seen her fair share of slightly off newcomers to Haven during her time running the Copper Dragon. "Don't worry honey, it'll get better. How about we make this meal on the house to get you off on the right foot. And I'll get you that ale right away." She deftly snatches a flagon from the rack above the bar and fills it precisely with a pull on the tap. "Like I said, anything I can help you with, you let me know, okay?"
Asledin smiles and nods his thanks. He accepts the ale and pulls hard, draining half of the flagon. "Ahh!", Asledin exclaims, "That hits the spot.". Asledin releases a rumbling belch, wipes his arm across his mouth, and sets the flagon down. Glancing up at Theran he asks, "You feel strongly about this Cassandra. Tell me about her."
Theran brings out the meal that Asledin ordered and places it in front of him. "What exactly do you want to know about Cassandra? She's rather intense, I don't imagine anyone is extremely close to her, but I can try to answer."
Asledin looks at the meal and slowly inhales the aroma with a smile. "This food smells great.", Asledin says, "Thank you!". Asledin holds up both hands and wriggles his fingers before dipping them into the plate. With one hand he stuffs potatoes in his mouth, closely followed by some pork with the other. He chews and nods his approval. After a hard swallow, Asledin follows up with a drink of ale. Swiping his arm across his mouth, he looks at Theran and says "I just thought you had more to say about her, I wasn't looking for any one piece of information, just a story or something. Where did she come from? Why is she so determined to fix", Asledin shrugs and rolls his eyes up, " whatever it is that's broken?"
"I can't speak to her motivation or her exact origin. My understanding is that she arrived after hearing of Haven in the Waterdeep marketplace, same as I did. Not sure where she had been before that. If you want to know more, you should swing by her shop and see if she'll talk to you." Theran is starting to have some concerns about the puzzling behaviour of this newcomer. Obviously, dealing with his trip through a portal to a place that he has only just discovered may be difficult to leave can be disconcerting, but she's starting to think there might be something else going on with Asledin.
Asledin listens to Theran as he continues to eat. When she is done speaking, he nods his head with a grunt. Asledin then attempts to speak over a bite, " Got bedsh her?", "Gonna need a bed.". Asledin then continues to eat with gusto. He tries to compliment the cooking, "Tis ss good!", he sputters. He then waves his right arm in a 90-degree arc and spits, "Nice placesch too!". He tracks a piece of potato that launched from his arcing hand and landed on the floor. All chewing stopped, briefly, and he appeared to ponder something. In a moment, though, he turned back to his dinner and picked up where he left off. With only one other quick glance at the wayward cube of potato, he began to concentrate on the quickly diminishing meal in front of him.
"Take your time there, fella, that food's not going to run off. Although, looks like one did manage to get away from ya." Theran nods over toward the piece on the floor with a slight frown. "I'm glad you're enjoying everything. If you need a room, it's the standard rate, 1 gold per night, includes meals. I'll put you up for the night, but after that it's on your dime. There are a few other places around town if that doesn't work for you."
Asledin nods to Theran as he shoves the remainder of food into his mouth. Making sure to pick any other pieces off the plate, he proceeds to hold the plate up with both hands while licking the surface. After performing a careful inspection, which failed to reveal anything else hiding on the wide-open surface of the plate, he sets it down on the bar. Asledin grabs the tankard and drains the remainder of ale, slaps it down on the bar and wipes his mouth on his sleeve. The farmer then wipes both of his hands, thoroughly, on his pants and begins the task of liberating his coin purse from his belt. Once that daunting task is completed, accompanied by several grunts, curses, and under the breath muttering, Asledin fishes out a gold piece and slides it in the direction of Theran. Now the patron tackles the job of painstakingly re-tying the purse to his belt, this he managed to do quietly and with a fair amount of speed. "Deal! ", Asledin exclaims, then he says, "Thank ay fer the offer, but I'll pay for the night." Asledin slides off of the stool, shoulders his pack and turns toward the door.
(Sorry for the delay, been a little crazy around here. Also, it sounds like a new adventure should be kicking off pretty soon, so I'll keep you posted on that.)
You take a brisk walk to the Scholars district, on the lookout for Cassandra's Magic. Even before you enter the Scholars proper, you see that it's quite easy to recognize the three story building housing the shop due to its height, but moreso because of the ludicrous contraption that occupies the greater part of the roof. Most folks simply call it “the Device” and it's well over 20 feet in height. There are gleams of polished brass, steel, and crystal, wheels upon wheels, balance beams, gears, springs, pendulums, and the entire mechanism is in constant motion.
Entering the shop, you see a plain young woman wearing a simple robe. She is moving about from one side of the room to the other, concentrating quite hard, perhaps tabulating figures in her head, while examining an array of open books.
Asledin stops and looks up to see if the machine is visible from the inside of the building. Satisfied, he sets his gaze on the woman who seems to be in perpetual motion. He tries to decide if it is worth interrupting her or not, which leads him to an impasse, resulting in a dumbfounded stare. A loud thump brings him out of his stupor with a quick look up. A look of concern forms on Asledin's face. While pointing his face up, his eyes dart from looking up, to looking at the woman, and back again. Asledin decides that if the contraption were going to fall in on them, she would show some outward sign of alarm, or concern. Surely. Glance, glance. Right? With one last upwards glance, Asledin backs closer to the door. Asledin clears his throat, and gaining no reaction says, "Hello?".
Early in the morning, while stalls are being set up to display their various products a small, cloaked and hooded figure appears from the shadows and approaches the Bulletin Board. Quickly the figure finishes and vanishes once again.
