After surveying the area and helping Yuri move horses he started to really feel his wounds from the last fight. He felt like he needed to sit down and rest. Sitting against the same tree as Gramgran he addressed Yuri, " Can you tell them what we found, It is what some of us may have feared. These appear to be the horses of Gundren and Sildar. For now I need a quick rest to attend to my wounds."
As he sat against the tree all he could think of was how Gundren and Sildar were being held against their will like he was before. The thought sickened him and made him grip his axe tightly in rage. If they found whoever took them he would not be able to hold back the rage building inside him.
“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
Having cleared the trail with Renvalm, Yuri walks back towards the wagon. Spying Gramgran and Renvalm sat in the shade of a tree by the trail, he wanders over.
Nodding back at the ambush point, he asks "Is everyone alright?", then, turning to address Renvalm and Gramgran, "Thank you," he drops his gaze "this sword was my mother's. If I were to lose it..." His voice trails off. Yuri quickly inhales, raising his head and allowing a small smile to cross his face. "Still, best not to dwell on it, I'll check on the others."
Yuri moves closer to the carts. "Is everyone alright here? he asks. Before going onto explain that the horses belonged to Gundren, and that the drag marks of two bodies cover the ground to the north of the ambush point.
Hoisting himself up to sit at the front of the wagon Yuri carefully unsheathes his longsword, most of the viscera had been wiped off, but a dark etching had already across the blade. He carefully runs an oil cloth from his pack across its surface, wondering whether his father's lessons had taught him anything about it.
Darthos frowned at what Yuri had shared and looked around the group, his eyes worried. "Do you think they were taken by the goblins that attacked us?" He asked to no one in particular, and began wondering what might have happened to them had they not defeated the goblins. Was Gundren even alive? The drag marks might suggest so, but they could just as well drag a dead body away to hide the fact that there had been an attack, but that didn't explain the horses. Closing his eyes again, he ran a hand through his hair once more, "should we go follow the drag marks? After this rest, I mean?"
"The odds are low that they are alive. They would want to keep the corpses out of sight as not to scare people off. None the less, I believe we should search for them in case they are still alive."
Kim starts looking around to see how everyone is handling the battle. Seeing only Renvalm and Darthos struggling with the idea of killing, she decided to go talk to one of them. Since Gramgran had already comforted Renvalm, Kim heads towards Darthos. On her way over though, she looks towards Morpetor and cast the message cantrip. "Morpetor, I am sorry that I did not trust you upon arrival. Your actions however, speak volumes. I know I can now trust you."
She makes it over to Darthos, sits next to him and says, "Not exactly what you thought it would be, is it. I'm not going to lie to you, being an adventurer, you will no doubt have to take another life at some point. If you feeltaintedby taking a life, then I suggest you head back now and start your penance. It will take more than a life time to apologize for taking life, even if it was just 1 goblin and in self defense. However, if you think you can be one of the people of this world that can carry that burden of taking a life to make the world a little better, then push through. Don't carry that burden yourself. Rely on your allies to hold it. I still remember my first kill. I was 8 years old and a coyote came up and started attacking the kids in my neighborhood. Out of fear, I panicked and just wished he would go away. I had grabbed an ice sickle off of a low hanging branch and tried to throw it at it, but instead of the ice sickle leaving my hand, a shard of ice formed out of no where and launched into the side of the coyote's head, impaling him. I will never forget that day. The good news of that story is that I found I can protect others with my skills, so the lives I have taken, all have been to protect others. SO if you need me, just let me know. I can talk you through it."
Kim leans her head back against a tree. She is attempting to make a nice space for Darthos to feel alone and process on his own,or speak to her if he chooses to do so. Sheremembers how hard it can be and knows, not everyone can take an order and rip alife from its body.
After the short rest, Gramgran wakes up feeling refreshed. She grasps her holy symbol and thanks Lliira for the joy of everyone being alive. Her wound has closed slightly, and it seems like everyone is feeling better, except for maybe Darthos. He still seems to be a bit in shock from everything that has happened. She looks over at Renvalm as the group discusses plans and asks, "What did I miss? I seem to have nodded off."
"It's just," he started as he sat up against the tree, "I never expected this and the shock of it all was more or less like a slap in the face. But you're right, making the world a little better has to come with a sacrifice and I suppose I'm just going to have to bear it as you do. Thank you, Kim. I needed that." With a weak smile, he stood with a grunt and looked around seeing Gramgran come through, the others sprawled about haphazardly. He recalled his master had told him that becoming a powerful wizard came at a great cost and he thought he understood it then, that he meant he had to struggle endlessly learning and memorizing, but he might have easily just as well been talking about the taking of a life or doing other horrendous things in the name of bettering the world. A great cost indeed, but he wanted to become powerful and so just like his master before him he might as well shoulder the burden.
Broken out of his train of thought by Gramgran's question Renvalm looks over to her and answers, filling her in on what they found. "It appears that the dead horses belonged to Gundren and his companion. There are signs that they were dragged off but it's unclear if they still live. We must decide now if we should go looking for them now. I'm not comfortable with letting someone stay in captivity."

She looks over at the trail into the woods, worry clear on her face. "Oh no, we can't leave Gundren and Sildar with those pesky goblins, what if they get hurt? Those two boys need our help!" Gramgran stands up her full 4 feet 10 inches, and says to the group, "Now I know that most of you only came on this job for the money, but I have two things to say to you all. One, we need to help those two, because they need our help. Two, if you need more than that, you won't get paid without Gundren. So who wants to come with me to save them?"
"My job is to deliver the supplies to Gundren." Kim said leaving a pause for concern, then smirks at Gramgran, "I can't fulfill that job without Gundren alive and in the next city, can I."
Kim looks around and eyes everyone over. "We need to be better prepared on our search however. I must have overlooked something before, so does anyone have a better plan or formation that we can use so this doesn't happen again?"
Kim's demeanor is no longer sulking. She has learned from the military to accept defeat and move on. Not doing so would only make things worse.
"I can send Boren down the track to see where it leads," he offered, "and to see if there are perhaps any more ambushes awaiting us. If there are we can plan out how to move from there. But for the time being, I'm going to go blind and deaf, so in case anything does go wrong just violently shake me." Suddenly he shifts his consciousness into Boren's and takes flight following the track to see if there's anything hiding about and where it leads.
"I agree, we must go looking for them. I know what it's like to be held against your will and no one should suffer that fate. We need to make a decision soon because time is of the essence. Whoever leads us must be adept at following a trail." With the idea of someone being held against there will brings images of the time he was adduced. Images of him being strapped down, no hope for escape, as they experimented on him. He still didn't know the full details of what went on only that since then he has had a internal rage inside. A rage that threatens to come out in the heat of battle. These images cause him grip the handle of his axe even harder. Those goblins had a reckoning to pay and next time he just might let his rage come out.

With one of his arrows recovered from the still warm goblin body, Morpetor returns to his party. Open up your coin purses! He exclaimed as he passed out loot that he found on their deceased enemies.
He nods at Kim, with a fatherly smile.
I agree, that we should investigate the whereabouts of our employers. But first, I'll take a short rest. Morpetor finds a tree, sits, and with his back against the trunk and his hood pulled down to cover his face he begins to snore.
Renvalm returns to the group and explains what he had found. The group hangs onto his every word. The fact their employer had been taken and his whereabouts and health unknown are most unsettling to everyone. The group talks about what the best course of action could be. The job, as they remember, were to deliver the good to Barthen's Provisions. They are left with a wagon full of supplies on a sparsely traveled road. The goblin trail Renvalm located is not wide enough to take the wagon through. It must be left behind if the path is traveled.
Yuri removes his dirtied blade from the sheath. The dark lines of goblin essence contrast against the light metal hilt of his family's weapon as the sun glares from it. The blade is easily cleaned of the bright red blood the covers the blade, which has not dried like the gore on the hilt. Strange..... As Yuri grabs the hilt with both hands, he can feel what he assumes is an arcane energy passing though one hand, across his body, then to the other hand. The energy clears his mind only when looking over at the fallen goblin foes. Yuri exclaims what he is feeling, excited and scared, of the revelations of his mind clearing at the scene of such gore and violence. The magic users of the group flock as Yuri requests help to understand what has happened to the weapon. Darthos takes the blade for a moment and examines the hilt. Darthos recalls from lore that blood and visceral is sometimes used in the creation of magical items. Darthos suggests somehow, someway the goblin blood infused to the weapon to create something magical. Morpetor and Kim are in awe of the magic item. They have seen magic items before, no doubt, but they have never seen one created in such a way. This was some sort of dark magic that has infused with the weapon. As Yuri examines the blade, he notices the feeling of arcane energy only when the weapon is being held with both hands, firmly to the hilt. Yuri's longsword has morphed into something unnatural. It is still the same weapon, but with some sort of added dark magic. Darthos suggests the weapon may lose its magical properties if the goblin remnants were to be removed or diluted.
Yuri - your longsword has now become the Longsword of Goblin Insight (this item is now in your inventory replacing the base longsword). You’re more than welcome to clean it up completely, but you will lose the magical properties.
RULES:
Was recovered from the scene of an epic goblin battle in the forest on the road to Phandalin. Found in a pile of goblin blood and vile. The essence of the defeated goblin attuned to the longsword and remains in the crevasses of the hilts carving. The blood and vile are black in color, emits no smell and is completely unnaturally dry to the touch. The essence appears to be just decorative markings. If the goblin essence ever meets water or any other item that would accomplish the same effect, the essence is washed away, losing it’s magical property.
While wielding this item in both hands, you are granted advantage on insight rolls against goblinoids.
Darthos sends up Boren to investigate the perceived trail. The woods are heavy. Tree cover obscures most of the trail, but you can tell there is a trail leading north. Goblins are hard to spot as they can hide rather well, but you assume if there were more, they would have either attacked during the battle or ran off.
The two options are either to finish the supply run or take the goblin trail.
Darthos returns his consciousness to his body and looks about the group, focusing a moment on Yuri's sword, and explains what he saw with Boren's eyes. "I think we should take the supplies to Barthen's Provisions, first," he says as he runs a hand through his hair, "then come back and try to get Gundren out from the goblins' grasps... if, if he's still alive that is. But, he wanted those supplies there first, so..." he trailed off and shrugged, "I can't speak for the man but I think that's what he'd want."
"I disagree Darthos. We need to prioritize getting Gundren. His life, if still in tact is probably on a time limit. We can't waste the time finishing the trip. I do have a solution though. I can create an Illusion around the cart, making it blend in with the trees. As long as no one touches it, the illusion will stay. This way we do not have to worry about the supplies going missing."
"Yes yes, do what you have to dearie, but in my experience goblins don't keep prisoners for long." Gramgran is visibly fidgeting to go. Oh, I hope those poor boys are alright.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yuri Naïlo
Yuri visibly shook. A force. A presence drifts through his body as he touches the hilt of his sword. He exhaled, stiffening his resolve. The sword wanted him to hold it, not in one hand, as his mother showed him, but in two. *Power, but not subtlety.*
Yuri stood upright in a fluid motion and tested the weight of his sword in one hand still. It felt the same in his grip, but also different. Closing his eyes and opening his mind as his father had tried to teach him, he reached out into the sword and placed his other hand on the hilt, spread his legs shoulder width apart and held the blade out directly in front of himself.
Yuri had heard the discussion from his companions. Leave whoever had been dragged away from the animals, or leave them to their fate and make good on the contract with Gundren. In saying that, dead men made poor debtors.
Skill check: Insight 9
Yuri is trying to determine whether the two bodies dragged away by the goblins are likely to be alive. And if they are alive, whether they are likely to stay that way.
"If we do plan on going on and look for them who will lead us along the trail?" "We need to decide fast because I agree with Gramgran, we don't have much time if we expect to find them alive. In the likely hood that they are dead it maybe duty to avenge their deaths, it's the right thing to do." Renvalm hefts the axe onto his shoulder, eager to get going. Looking over at Yuri Renvalm can't help but notice that he is acting strange. After hearing what the magic users had said about what happened to the sword he can't help but feel concerned and somewhat responsible for the whole thing. He would have to keep a close eye on him in case something was wrong. He would have to talk with him when he had a chance.
“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
Yuri is trying to determine whether the two bodies dragged away by the goblins are likely to be alive. And if they are alive, whether they are likely to stay that way.
There’s no way of telling if they were alive or not. The drag marks are from medium sized creatures, so a size larger than goblins.
Looking around he sees everyone willing to go after their employer and although he isn't exactly adverse to their decision, it's the fear of killing that holds him and even though he agreed to shoulder the burden, with the image of the burning goblin still fresh in his mind, he was still very hesitant. But, he steeled himself. The fight was a close one and if they hadn't worked as a team the goblins could have very well killed them and not batted an eyelash about it, whereas he was there on the verge of letting everyone down. The though of his master frowning at him, scowling in disgust was what finally did it, sparked that little flame of courage that he would need to nurse. "Considering Yuri's sword which is somehow connected to the goblins by the blood and gore," he says, "I think he should take point."

Looking around he sees everyone willing to go after their employer and although he isn't exactly adverse to their decision, it's the fear of killing that holds him and even though he agreed to shoulder the burden, with the image of the burning goblin still fresh in his mind, he was still very hesitant.
