Veythe takes Rezivah's words, mulls over them, and then glances to Vasha. She makes a quick set of signs--do you think that will be enough?--and then relaxes her shoulders. She eyes Rezivah, feels vindictive pleasure over the state of her bleeding nose, but otherwise dismisses the vampire after that. They'd settle whatever differences they had later, no doubt. Veythe didn't like Rezivah. She didn't like the intrusion into their group, and she definitely didn't like Rezivah's connections to Veilara and that was that.
"Very well," Veythe said aloud after a second. "You know her best."
Looking sadly at her sister, Vasha weighed Veythe's question. Was it enough? Or was the object of Vielara's desire in that last room? Finally, after a moment, she spoke again. "I think Rezivah is right. If we can't find a safe way through that room, we leave. We know how to open the hedron now, and we've cleared 99% of this place. We can bring this knowledge to Vielara, with the hope it's enough. If not..." she trailed off, momentarily, putting a hand on Veythe's shoulder and giving her a small squeeze. "If not, I will deal with the consequences." Vasha could see Veythe and Rezivah still glaring at each other, and knew she'd have to keep an eye on both women. "Come on, let's go see what we can do about those lasers." She followed behind Kayn with a heavy heart. Soon, they'd be reporting to Vielara, and she knew, deep in her heart, either her or her sister wouldn't live past that meeting. If she had it her way, she'd do anything in her power to make sure Vesra lived.
Veythe pressed her lips together. Vasha would not deal with those consequences, especially not alone. Veythe didn't like that Vesra's life was on the line, or even that Vasha's could possibly be. She shot a look to Rezivah, and quickly raced back after Vasha. After a moments hesitation she reached down and squeezed the Kor woman's hand.
"Not alone," Veythe told her. She refused to let Vasha handle this alone. The woman didn't deserve, not after everything that happened. After a moment, Veythe sighed. She signed quickly, and I'm sorry. She makes me uncomfortable. Concerned. Angry. "Let us just get out of this hedron and back to civilization." For a moment Veythe thought about providing Vasha her appreciation for the gift, but given everything that happened recently she decided against it. Later, Veythe consoled. Later she'd let Vasha know how much she appreciated the lute.
When Kayn had scooped up the hedron key and stated his intention to go back after the basilisk egg, Ato moved to follow. "Kayn, wai..." His words, and action, were cut short by the sudden flaring conflict between Veythe and Rezivah. He narrowed his eyes, disappointed that it had come to this right now. They were in enough danger in here, and despite their differences, needed to stay focused to get through it in one piece. Still, best to just have it out and be done, so the women needed to finish it. What would come would come. It was a bit disappointing, if he was being honest with himself, when Vasha stepped in to mediate and stopped the fight.
When it appeared to be de-escalated for the time being, he moved to follow Kayn, ignoring the glares still passing between the participants, the kor sign, which he was coming to recognize if not understand, and for all intents and purposes ignoring it completely. "Yes, let's see if there is a chance of recovering the egg and whatever else your gnarlid had been carrying and be done. Whatever is beyond that last door isn't worth my life. I'm done here and Vielara will have to be satisfied that we explored as much as we could."
"Kayn, if we go in there, I have to be sure we will be safe," Vesra protested, taking the hedron key. "No just running in and seeing what happens, alright?" The cube glowed in her hand as she poured some of her own mana into it.
"I'll send Ember in first, he's small and fast, and if things go pear shaped I can send him away," she explained further, beginning to follow Kayn toward the trap room. "From there... we'll have to see. I don't like this, Kayn. I don't want anyone else getting hurt. No party member is going to walk into that room until I deem it safe. I have a spell that I could cast through Ember, just like you taught me. If all goes according to plan, I think I can push the gnarlid and all of your gear back into the hallway."
As Vasha moved to follow Kayn, she realized he had handed her an amulet of some sort. Glancing at it, she realized she had no idea what it might be. Kayn was already running off, with others following. She glanced at Rezivah, and thought the vampire might have some way to figure out what the object might be. "Hey, Rezivah?" She moved closer to the girl. "You wouldn't happen to know what this is, do you?" She held the amulet up, allowing Rez to take it.
Rezivah looked at Vasha and held her gaze for a moment. Taking hold of the item, Rezivah looked it over. It was clearly magical. A small blue hedron inscribed with dozens of runes. The chain was gold. She tried to ascertain a sense of managic from the amulet and poke and prod it with her own. But nothing. She didn't know what it was. She hands it back. "Here. I don't know what it is, but it is magical."
Vasha nodded, taking the item back. "Thank you for trying. I don't know anything about this magic stuff." Looking at Veythe, she continued. "Don't think badly of her. Things are stressful..." She paused, internal debate evident on her face. "Veythe is rather... upset... with Vielara. If we don't do exactly what Vielara wants... if I don't do everything she wants... she's going to kill my sister." She returned her gaze to Rezivah. "I only just told her. She probably thinks you're here to spy on us. But that's not true, is it? You're just as..." Pausing a moment, she searched for the right word. "You're just as stuck as the rest of us, aren't you?"
"Hm. Yes. I was friendly to you, and now I'm not so sure I don't regret it. But this.. deal with Vielara. Your sister's life.. for what, the contents of this hedron?" The price was steep. Perhaps there was something in this hedron important to Vielara after all, behind that last chamber. Surely some corpses and those alien aberrations aren't what Vielara's after. "Your group has found its limit. Vielara will respect that. That in of itself is a test."
Vasha shook her head. "No. The deal is a leash, to keep me in line. If I don't do as I'm told, like a dog..." She looked away quickly. "Vesra will die. Because that's the damn agreement my sister made with Vielara. We were told to find what is in here, we've nearly died trying, but we're missing a room." She glanced back at Rezivah. "Some of us worry leaving that room untouched will violate this agreement." Tears began to form in her eyes, causing her to look away once again. "Whatever happens, it's on my head. I can't have you two killing each other added on top of the guilt of putting my sister in this position."
Had they angered Vielara? What is the life of a single Kor to her? Something was missing from Vasha's explaination. It wasn't clicking in Rezivah's head. There must be something she didn't know, that either this party or Vielara knows. More secrets. Secrets that were bothering Rezivah deeply with escalating force. She hadn't noticed the Kor had begun crying in heartfelt sorrow. "I am none of your concern. If you and your friends are so worried about your sister's safety, find a way into the last chamber. It's the only way to be certain."
Vasha looked at Rezivah, sadly. "I'm worried about all of us, Rezivah. I've seen what this hedron was built to contain." She began walking to catch up to the others. "I think we might just die here, unleashing some terrible thing upon Zendikar."
Rezivah asked behind her, "Then what's worth more, your sister's life or that of Zendikar?"
"That's exactly why everything is on me." She glanced back. "How would you feel knowing no matter what you chose, someone was going to die? The only thing I can hope for is to die in Vesra's place."
Rezivah smiled. "I am a vampire, Vasha. The death of others isn't entirely a grievance to me, only if it is needless. But if I had anything to do with a situation like yours. I'd choose my beloved one. But, I've never had such a person. Seems you do." Rezivah looks beyond Vasha to her sister.
Vasha slipped the amulet around her neck. "That's why I have to protect her... somehow." She touched the amulet. "Thanks for trying." Making her way to the laser room, catching up to the others, Vasha had made up her mind. She would die to protect Vesra, and began preparing herself for that outcome. Speaking loudly, she called out, "If we can't turn off the lasers, we're leaving!"
As they enter the hallway to the incinerator, Kayn points out that someone needs to stand in the doorway to prevent it from closing on them. "We'll be quick!" he says. "In and out as fast as an Affa whore. Everyone stay back from the door down the hall or else you'll get ray'd on."
He then nods to Vesra, "Ready?" he asks. He reaches his hand out for the hedron.
Reluctantly, Vesra hands Kayn the hedron cube with a nod of her head. This was the group's next step into the hedron, as hard as it was for them to admit it. Kayn places the cube into the slot on the large door, which flares to life as the cube goes dormant. The stone door separates in two, as each side slides into the wall while the cube drops to the floor. The room, like everywhere else, is dark, limiting visibility substantially [Darkness]. Kayn is able to make out the slumped figure of his gnarlid, long dead, lying with its back turned to the pillar in a protective stance. Its form obscures whatever it has cradled to its chest.
The pillar continues to remain dormant as the group stands just outside of the door frame in the hallway.
Kayn is prepared to sprint when the door opens. But instead of death-lasers he's met with silence. The lasers must have stopped after killing the gnarlid. There's a sense of sadness when he sees the corpse of his bonded animal, but he pushes it aside to focus on the task at hand.
He could slow down and think properly with the lasers off, so he looks down at the small amulet he has clutched in his hand. "Oh... I meant to give this to you, Vessie," he says, handing the amulet to the Kor teenager.
With his hand free he lifts the hedron cube and fills it with the last of his mana. "Get ready," he says, dropping his pack in the doorway. If Vasha got injured, at least the door wouldn't close on them. Once Vesra nods to him to indicate that she's ready, Kayn makes a dash straight for the southern hallway with the glowing hedron key in-hand.
Veythe watched as Vasha slipped away and over to Rezivah. She didn't try to eavesdrop onto the conversation even though she wanted to. Instead she turned her head away and frowned, one hand reached up to grasp at her arm. What did Vasha see in that woman, anyway? They'd only just really started to get to know each other and Veythe wondered if she'd screwed up everything. This is why she tried not to get attached. When they leave you, when they decide you aren't worth it, then it's not harder.
Except, Veythe thought bitterly, it always is hard no matter what. Hadn't she talked to Vasha about this very thing, these very thoughts? Veythe sighed, shook her head, and decided to just ignore it. To ignore the hurt that shot through her, to ignore Rezivah, to ignore the mess of everything in front of her and how she might have completely ruined everything. Veythe breathed, and hung back behind the group. If they needed healing, she'd provide it. Otherwise Veythe would keep her silence.
There was little Ato could do but wait. He hunkered around the corner, safe from the searing beams should they erupt once again from the pillar which guarded the room. Kayn and Vesra, through Ember, were taking the risks of once again attempting to scout the room and hallway beyond, so any help he could offer would have to wait until they had more information on what lay beyond.
Vesra took the amulet and placed it over her head before lighting up her hand so that she could see in the darkness. “Alright, Kayn, let’s go,” she stutterered, taking off at a sprint into the laser room after him. Ember followed close behind, although he went to the gnarlid’s side instead of the side hallway.
Catching her breath, she found herself in a strange, triangular room. Near the center of the room lay the rubble of two hedrons, utterly destroyed. A gaping pit at the far end of the hallway, whose mana reminded her of the vampire den, set her on edge.
Vasha heard the plan, knowing Vesra was going with Kayn. "I'll make it to the gnarlid and grab the gear. Be safe!" She pulled out another torch, lighting it, so she could see in the darkened room. Taking a deep breath, she ran for the corpse of the downed gnarlid, sliding to it, and ending up in a crouch behind it. She should be safe from those nasty lasers, at least long enough to grab the gear.
Kayn rushed in as soon as Vesra said she was ready. When he entered the triangular room he feel the overwhelming feeling of dread that the group felt in the vampire den. "What is this thing?" He says out loud.
He cocks his head as if listening. A few moments pass before he steps closer to the edge of the pit. It goes about twenty feet down before being covered in the white residue that litters the hedron. "And you say these... titans... and the aliens we fought are the Eldrazi?" Kayn asks.
Again there's silence, but Kayn listens. "Then who made the hedrons, if not the Eldrazi?" Kayn asks. A moment later he asks, "And the prophetess is the one in the etchings?"
"One last question..." he says, "Why did you come to the hedron?" Kayn nods in response. "Ok... I will help you get to your pool. But if I ever get the feeling that you're lying, my body will no longer be your shield."
He shakes his head and looks over the deep, dark pit before yelling, "Eldrazi!! The way is clear!"
Kayn's shouting rings clearly through the noise of the buzzing lasers, reaching the ears of those waiting around the corner in the hallway. You wonder what Kayn is rambling about with the Eldrazi, but him saying, "The way is clear!" seems to imply that it's safe to cross?
Vasha slides into the gnarlid and lays low, avoiding the lasers as she scans to see what's salvageable. Many of the items have been badly broken or burned, but the egg is safe and sound, it's its smooth, rocky surface protecting the contents inside from shattering. Nothing else, in particular, seems salvageable as you search around [Investigation of 3].
In response to Kayn shouting, he can make out a slowly pulsating light coming from beneath, just barely illuminating what looks like to be a small room. The light pulsates a sickly purple color, so faint it appears as a pale pink.
Vasha snatched up the egg, stashing it in her pack, making sure it was safe. Hearing Kayn yell, she looked toward the dark room he and Vesra. Fearing the worst, she knew she needed to get to that room. She was about to run, when she noticed that the gnarlid blocked the lasers enough that if she were to crawl on the ground, she could easily make it to that room safely. Flattening herself on the ground, she began to make her way toward her sister and Kayn.
Kayn scowls at the appearance of the light. Something was down there. Something bad. He slips his wand into his hand and, with a few quick flicks, hurls a small moat of fire at the light. He's hoping, waiting for a reaction. If these titans were real, it was something that very few in this world have ever witnessed or experienced. He needed to know what resided in these hedrons if he ever hoped to continue exploring them in the future. Were they really Eldrazi, and was everything he knew about the history of Zendikar false? (11 to hit, 5 damage)
The fire bolt strikes the floor an pitters out. Kayn calls out again, "Show yourself, Eldrazi!"
The wave of sickly mana made her nauseous, but she had to remain strong. Out of nowhere, Kayn flung a bolt of fire at the newly appeared pulsing light. "Kayn, you're scaring me. What are they saying?" Vesra asked, her voice trembling. Was there some invisible attacker she could not see?
"This is it, Vessie." Kayn turns to Vasha as she crawls forward and addresses them both. "We can cleanse this place. One more fight..." He points behind him to the small glow. "If we don't, someone else will find this place, free this creature, and all of the effort we put into keeping them inside will be for naught." He wanted to see what they'd be facing before the battle, but the 'Eldrazi' was determined to keep itself hidden.
"We need the others," Kayn says. "All of them."
"Adie, Veythie, Rezzie! We need you!" Kayn yells out to the hallway. "Run in, duck behind the gnarlid, and crawl into the room!"
"I don't think we should be here," Vasha mumbled as she stood. She saw the light, she knew what she had seen in her vision, and she knew what the hedron was built to contain. "There's something bad here. I've seen it." Her voice was distant, as if she were seeing the vision again. "Ask yourself, why would they build something this big to hold treasure? I don't like this." She drew her weapons, knowing this might be the last time she saw her sister. "I love you, Flower," she said quietly.
