Hi guys! I was wondering. Since Season 8 removes the ability to earn gold via quest rewards and acquired story item loot, is earning gold through unorthodox ways (receiving money from patrons via performing in taverns, selling stolen goods and thievery, selling crafted items, looting items like armor from slain enemies, etc.) allowed?

Thread moved to AL subforum
What Season are you talking about? Critical Rolls? If you look at a show they do not define how you are allowed to play the game, that is your DM that say what you can or can't do. Also how is getting money through performing for a patron an unorthodox way to earn money? You do the same with a quest. A Patron comes to you (or you to them) and ask you to do X or find Y and in return you get Z amount of money as a quest reward, and that reward should include a hazard premium for the risk of death involved. Doing paid quests for someone is called being a mercenary and that is an orthodox way to earn money just as having a job is orthodox.
A economically deprived world is a world where products doesn't exist. Remember that money is just a piece of useless stuff everyone agree have a set value to make it easier to trade with. You only have a economically deprived world when you either do not have the products to buy with the money you have, or you do not have the money to buy the products with. In the first option you are in some serious shit, that is a horrible situation since it breed misery and misery likes the company of more misery. In Curse of Strahd you have an example of this. You can only buy Adventure Gear that is worth less then 25g (meaning no useful stuff basically) at a 5 to 10 times the normal cost. That means you can not buy armor or weapons as well. In the later situation you got a place where that will be resolved easily. It means either people make up a new currency to cover for what the currency can't handle, or have a black market if the reason the currency doesn't circulate well enough because the government is holding it back for some reason. But this isn't really a world where everyone is economically deprived.
If you want a world where everyone suffers economically you have to make sure growth and products simply doesn't exist. Africa isn't poor because they can not find people to buy high end computers and cellphones to, they are poor because they do not have the infrastructure needed to grow as nations. The criminality and wars does nothing but to hinder development. So my advice is that you should just have the rewards and ways to earn money as normal, just lower how much everything gives, raise the cost of everything and remove things they can buy which forces them to find the stuff or build the structures to start making the stuff themselves.
Have not read your full reply, but to answer the very first question you ask: he's talking about Season 8 of Adventurer's League, D&D's official organised play.
Possibly this thread should be moved to the Adventurer's League section of the forums to avoid confusion...
I'm not sure what other ideas were generated, but as per official AL S08 rules there is NO WAY to make money other than through leveling or through purchasing gold using treasure checkpoints. (1 Treasure Check Point = 50GP).
Your other option is to but treasure with treasure check points, and then sell it, but there isn't much that will net you that much money. Average would be about the 50GP per 1 point you already can get.
That's it.
And yes it's terrible... and no, not a single person anywhere likes the new system, and yes everyone is going to stop playing AL if they don't retcon it.

Do you have a citation for this, because I've read over the rules a few times and I don't recall seeing it?
Most of it is from the Season 8 Adventure League Dungeon Master Guide under the Player Rewards section on the last page, then also on page 174 of Xanathar's Guide to Everything under the buying and selling heading it says that "..., characters are not entitled to sell items they find on adventures or equipment they purchase with their personal funds." I am a little fuzzy as to how this effects items received as starting equipment, and items got thru Treasure points. Also the reason why I think XGTE is valid here is because Appendix A is where the whole checkpoint system is introduced and explaned, even though the version in AL is slightly different as in points do not have to be spent immediately, and that treasure cost twice as many points in AL(outside of gold which isn't available in XGTE outside of leveling that I can find)
I wouldn't trust XGtE as a source. It's fine for getting a feel for the rules, but the rules in full are in the ALPG, ALDMG, and FAQ.
From the ALPG v8.2, "Your character can sell or buy spell components and equipment found in the resources listed in Step 1 & 2, above." So buying and selling equipment is explicitly allowed as long as the price is listed in the PHB.
This means that if you can find a repeatable way to get a listed item for free, then selling it and keeping the proceeds is allowed. The method I proposed in the other thread was the alchemy jug, but there may be others.
It's on page 4 of the Adventure League Content Catalog

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I had no question about selling checkpoints, but rather your assertion that there was no way to make gold except by leveling or selling checkpoints.
Well AL play doesn't support making money by any RP means... and crafting anything requires downtime days. So I guess you could spend downtime days to craft an item and then sell it? But this isn't going to exactly make you rich.
The alchemy jug is an interesting idea, I suppose it could work... and it refills pretty quick, but selling it's contents is completely at the DM's discretion. It's also not an item listed on the evergreen list... so if you have one great, but otherwise how do you intend on getting one?
You cannot find gold while adventuring under ANY circumstances (through reward or treasure), and you cannot sell items you find while adventuring. At the end of the play session anything found magically disappears.
So we're left with creative ways of making money all of which work more as a workaround / glitch instead of an actual mechanic of play. This is as designed.

Thanks for the clarification.
I disagree with you about the DM discretion. You are explicitly allowed to buy/sell items that have a listed price in the PHB. Acid has a listed price in the PHB (and importantly a listed/known quantity).
Yes at a cost of downtime days. This is arguing semantics though. Unless you go specifically looking for it you're probably not going to have an Alchemy Jug as there are only 4 ways to get in in all AL play.
If you're so set on subverting the rules that Wizards put out why not just play regular DnD and to hell with the ridiculous S08 rules. Hopefully they will retcon them in next season.

This is not accurate. The entry you mentioned in the ALPG is talking about starting equipment and gold. With the gold from your background and selling starting equipment, you can use that gold to buy other equipment listed in the resources mentioned.
Items created from the Alchemy Jug during the game are treated the same as any other mundane items found during the game that are not listed in a treasure section. You can use, but not sell, it during the session. Afterward, it is lost. Travis Woodall made this ruling with #AL_Admin and everything.
You can find his ruling about the Alchemy Jug (specifically) in this thread, you'll have to scroll down.
Right now, the methods for obtaining gold are as follows:
- Selling starting equipment - Leveling up - Selling treasure checkpoints - A few places mentioned in the ALCC (especially under the season 8 content) - Certain downtime activities

Born in Italy, moved a bunch, living in Spain, my heart always belonged to Roleplaying Games
We went over this a few months ago in another thread. Ultimately, there were only a few ideas generated and none of them were great.

Just jumping in to rebut the last point made here, because I like the new system, and I won't stop playing AL even if they don't retcon it.
That is all.

Sorry, I got confused with the ALCC mentioning XGE in the section about evergreen items, and the Changes to D&D AL Rewards Article.

Well you can, if you have the ability to. As in, you're in a town with a vendor etc... Thats what I meant about DM's discretion.
Sure, but you can also do it between sessions without any DM required.
