I'm fairly new to adventurers league, but though some backgrounds seem to play mostly the same, some really don't. In particular, I don't see how any backgrounds that says to work with your DM can work in AL. The most obvious example is the hermit feature discovery, but even things like picking a military rank or noble title seem to break in the context of AL. Can I just choose to be a general or a king?
Does anyone have any good anecdotes of these problematic backgrounds working out/advice on how to make them work?
For the most part, since you can create your own custom background in AL, it's up to the player how he wants it to work out. When it says to work with your DM, I think it mostly applies to campaigns where your character's background is generally more likely to be relevant to the story.

I agree that "work with your DM" mostly applies to homebrew campaigns. I disagree that in AL it's up to the player how he or she wants his or her backgrounds to work out. If I play Thorgrim Emperor of the Dwarven Kingdoms (or some similar nonsense), it's reasonable to expect the proper deference to be given me as a an emperor. In an AL game, does any NPC care? I would argue that they can't care without breaking the story. To be more explicit, I don't see how the story could not revolve around an Emperor. Why isn't Thorgrim on his throne, why aren't servants littering the ground with flower petals before every step, why aren't assassin's trying to kill him, why doesn't he care about the coup attempts that will surely take place in his absence?
