I homebrewed a vampire race for my group. The vampire has a bite attack that deals 1d6 + str piercing damage + blood die necrotic. Blood die scale the same way sneak attack die scale i.e. it's 1d6 at level 1, 2d6 at level 3, 3d6 at level 5, etc.
While I'd like to treat this like the rogue's sneak attack in the way it appears on the character sheet, I'm having trouble finding a way to enter this in racial traits.
Currently I've created the Blood Die trait, and added a Blood Die action to the trait. The action is a "weapon" because I want it to show in the attack actions section of their character sheet, the way sneak attack does. I attempted to make the action "general", but it didn't appear in the right section, and was an explanation of the ability, not a dice roll.
I've done the level overrides that allow me to scale the damage, however when you create a "weapon", it forces you to add a modifier. I don't want to do that, as the blood die are added to the bite attack, it's not a separate attack.
I'd like a Blood Die option, granted by their vampire race. I'd like the Blood Die to appear in the actions section of the players' character sheets, and to scale as they level, and I do not want a modifier added to the damage.
Is there a way to do this when creating a race? Let me know either way, or if I can clarify what I've done and what I'm hoping to do any better.
If you don't want to extra modifier to be added to the damage, you'll need to make it a General action instead of a Weapon action.
Which tab it shows up on is set by the Activation Type. Sneak Attack is set to either No Action or Special because it shows up on the Other tab. You can set Activation Type to Action if you want so it'll show up on the Action tab, but that's not how Sneak Attack is set up.
Make sure to leave Attack Range blank so it doesn't give you a To Hit button (and force the modifier on the damage), but Display as Attack should be on so the damage button does show up.
Maybe a screenshot of the Add Action screen to see how it's set up and a screenshot of how it looks on the character sheet would help us all figure out what else needs to be set up right.
Thank you for your response Mairondil! I just tried setting it up as a General action instead like you suggested, but it doesn't offer the Level Override options at the bottom to scale the damage as they level, the way it's available for a Weapon action. That's the trouble I'm having: either I can have the damage scale with a modifier, or I can get the damage without the modifier, but also without the scaling.
I'm trying to copy my screenshot in here to show you, but having technical difficulties. I don't have too many boxes filled out for this though, so I'll tell you what I have setup in the Add Action section and hopefully that helps.
Action Type: General Name: Blood Die Dice Count: 1 Die Type: d6 Display as Attack: Yes
And that's it. Thanks again for your time and help!

The level scaling won’t appear until after you save the initial Action. And you also need to designate an Activation Type too.
