I am currently running a game for my kids. One of my girls is playing a 2 level wizard and a 3rd level spellfire wielder. Ive been slowly tweeking the class for her. Im trying to make it in line with Shandril as much as possible from the books. So readying an action to absorb a spell just doesn't work. Also absorbing as a reaction also doesn't work as that can only be done once per round. So this is how I have started doing it. So consider back to when Shandril was fighting the heap of beholders. She didn't seem to be being affected spell wise. She was getting exhausted for the constant absorbing and seemed to be more in pain from that. You can only do 1 reaction per round. This would have meant that she would have only absorbed 1 spell for that round and all others would have got through. Ive decided that on the characters first round they have to ready an action to "turn on" the absorption ability and then it stays on till the pc mentally turns it off or falls unconscious, etc. Remember the harpers used a slow spell on her and the demi lich also used magic on her while asleep. Id say the harpers initiative was first so she couldn't absorb it, as her initiative was later so hadn't turned it on yet, so they got in before her And its a conscious thought to absorb so therefore needed to be awake to have stopped the demi lich. Im also trying to make sense of what it can absorb etc. In the novels the beholders antimagic ray was useless. So does this mean spellfire can still function in a anti magic field and magic dead areas or was it because the antimagic ray from the beholders was considered a supernatural ability and spellfire absorbs supernatural abilities. Also would a vampires strength draining ability be considered a super natural ability. (Our campaign is currently in Ravenloft.) Next question, if at 3rd level you can now choose to absorb a magic item or not if you touch it, does that go the same for spells, such as a protection spell cast on yourself would you loose it once the spellfire activated or would you have to constiously absorb it. Ie when the harpers cast the slow spell on her, it seemed to continue to work?? What are peoples thoughts and ideas please. This is for 5e.
