In the War of the Ring Sauron sends forces to attack Lothlorien and Thranduil’s realm, but not Rivendell. Why would he attack GALADRIEL but not Elrond, who looks like a little kid in comparison? Well, it’s cause Sauron’s criteria for identifying who had the Three seems to be based off what kingdom’s resist him more, and Thranduil’s realm being completely immune to his power evidently convinces Sauron that he has one of the Three. That’s why he attacks Thranduil instead of Elrond, Thranduil’s Ring confuses him.
I also love how this proves that Thranduil is only rivalled by Galadriel in terms of power. Like I said, his Ring is not very powerful, so Thranduil is resisting Sauron pretty much on his own power. Dude’s in the top tier of the most powerful elves that ever lived.
Yeah, in the movies his wife got offed by Angmar. So he’s kinda cold, xenophobic, isolated, and generally shuts out most of the world. And is distant to everyone, even Legolas. His plot is that just before his wife died, he commissioned the dwarves of Erebor to make a necklace of the White Gems of Lasgalen for her. The dwarves likes it so much they said Thranduil hadn’t payed them enough and wouldn’t give it to him. By then, Thranduil’s wife was dead and he was becoming increasingly obsessed with the necklace as it was the last thing he had to remember her by. So the dwarves were surprised when Thranduil said f*ck you ******** when the dragon came and didn’t help them. In the movie, he tries to bargain with Thorin for it but Thorin pretty much spits in his face. By this time Thranduil is incredibly pissed off at the dwarves, so once the dragon dies he turns up with his massive army and is like last chance, give me the necklace or you can fight 10,000 Elven warriors plus me. It’s a free ticket to death.
Unexpected Journey, hands down. Cut out Azog and make Thorin less of a bully and it’d be my favourite Tolkien film. Nice thing is, it’s easy to skip the Azog and Thorin bullying Bilbo scenes cause they honestly don’t affect the plot lol. So I just press fast forward and have a perfectly enjoyable movie lol.

You do realise Thorin being a "bully" is perfectly in-character? He doubts Bilbo's abilities and thinks he will jeopardise the whole quest to Erebor, which is a large part of his life's work. You'd be grumpy too. And Azog... welll, there we are kinda in agreement.

Yeah, him doubting Bilbo makes perfect sense, Tolkien himself said it and it’s a wonderful dynamic. But when he yells at Bilbo “He’s been lost ever since he stepped out of his door. He should never have come. He has no place amongst us!” that’s beyond doubt, that’s bullying, mean, and a total ******* move. There was no need for that, and the audience will want to punch him in the face. And this is after Bilbo’s quick thinking saved them from the trolls, so Bilbo has proved he’s not useless by this point.
Azog isn’t a bad villain, in fact he’s a very good villain. Everything about him is very well done. His problem is that he takes away from the true BBEGs of the Hobbit, Sauron and Smaug. He’s one villain too many, and he feels like the real enemy, not the dragon or the Necromancer, cause he’s got way more screen time. I see what they were going for with him, he’s just a little too good.

It's also after Bilbo has whined for days and got them caught by the trolls in the first place.
Also Azog feels like one of the things Guillermo Del Toro came up with before Jackson took over again. I mean, the size, the missing arm, the "pale orc", it rings lots of Guillermo bells. Not to say that he isn't a good director though.

Still no excuse for being a bully. The rest of the group, even big tough Dwalin, agreed Bilbo was one of the company. Thorin might distrust him, but pulling something like that ticks every single box of how to be a jerk, *******, and absolutely terrible leader.
Sooo, I read the Hobbit once a long time ago, watched all of the movies more recently, and don’t know anything about the lore. On the plus side, Balrogs are cool.
May I join?

That makes sense. Is Thranduil a widower?
