What non-fantasy genre inspirations have you used in creating your Characters / Adventures / Worlds?
I love Speculative Fiction which includes a lot of stuff, including fantasy. Supernatural, Gothic, Apocalyptic, etc. all include elements of fantasy, but they are different things. I have also used stuff from Nonsense poetry, but I reckon that is pretty similar to fantasy too.
I do enjoy horror, but I am pretty picky about it. I care not for blood and guts and ridiculous levels of violence and depravity. I do like it when the villain of the story is frightening and it is great when stories have a tangible atmosphere. The comic book I am writing would probably be considered gothic or folk horror because of all the monsters, disease, and dead people who won’t stay dead. I do have a bunch of adventures and characters that use bits of horror. I guess I’ll conclude by saying that I like some Gothic, Folk, and/or Cosmic horror.
I’ve been wanting to use some Wild West and colonial America, but I haven’t had the chance yet.
What non-fantasy genre inspirations have you used in creating your Characters / Adventures / Worlds?
I am most proud of some of my past stuff:
It, by Stephen King makes a killer adventure.
The Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammet, also makes for an absolute banger of an adventure.
A Fistfull of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More are great for adventures as well.
I'll shame myself by saying I haven't seen any of those.
Really⁉️⁉️⁉️ I didn’t like It, and The Matese Falcon was good, but slow and a bit dated. But those Sergio Leone movies are pure gold.
Well, it is a matter of taste, lol.
The first two I used the books over the films, but it is fair to say that Falcon does have a slow movement. It has also been used in a couple of old modules that were official.
I like to use a lot of popular western stuff as a set up.
Which is really my big approach with all of this stuff. I just do set ups, lol.

I have a lot of inspirations, but most of them don't fall cleanly into just one if any genre.
OFF by Mortis Ghost is... surreal horror? It's really, really weird.
Bloodborne is more gothic/cosmic horror + steampunk than fantasy.
Toriko is part fantasy, part biopunk, part food adventure, part shonen. The fantasy is limited almost exclusively to creatures and character powers, and even then they veer a bit into sci-fi.
Darkwood is "fantasy" in the same way you could say it's a "fairy tale written by David Lynch." Neither one is true, but it gives an idea of what you're in for.

The line between what is fantasy can be blurred.
For example, I have used references to Mortal Kombat (reflavored) into my game. Even did some Killer Instinct. There's an entire Monk order that has a metric ton of Star Wars and Street Fighter references. I have a number of NPCs that are inspired by the Darkstalkers game.

Do you mean the new IT movie where they redid it - or the original?
Because the original is really good. I did not care for the remake, myself.
Specifically, I mean the book.
The attempts at it each had their good points, but each was flawed in different ways. Which is a nice way of saying I have thoughts on the subject, lol.

I have not seen the remake as I did not enjoy the original or the book. Can’t do Cujo, Pet Cemetery, or Thinner either.
I see an obvious theme (horror involving animals) except for Thinner. I've never read Thinner, only ever seen the movie of that.
Thinner is the horror of a parent at cursing their child.
Would not have thought Thinner would bother you! (Have you seen the movie?) I've not read the book - so I just remember lawyer ... being ... 'distracted' and running over someone... and then the grandmother (?) curses him...
It's very, very, very D&D in terms of hags and curses ... because they'd do a similar, very cruel, curse. (Not to say that the person doing it, or the people they represent, are hags!) Just the idea of the curse that was bestowed would be something I could see a hag tricking a mortal into. "I will give you an infinite amount of food," while the person is starving in the desert - "Sign the agreement." Signed. And they get food. But no matter how much they eat, they continue to wither away. So they devour more and more... all just to make them wither away all the faster!

Towards the end of the story he goes begging to the hag to lift the curse. She tells him the only way to lift the curse is to put it in a pie and feed it to someone else, passing the curse along to them. So he puts it in a pie intending to feed it to his wife and puts it in the fridge. The man later discovers that his daughter came home early and unknowingly ate a slice of the pie, dooming herself to suffer his horrific fate. So he sits down and eats the rest of the pie as a way to commit suicide. It made me sick. I mean that literally, I had such a strong feeling of revulsion that it made me feel physically ill. Sometimes King crosses that line for me. I love his Dark Tower series and the rest of the many of the orbital universe of stories he’s written related to that series (Needful Things, Storm of the Century, The Stand, etc.), but some of his stuff I just can’t do.
