As someone who was thrust into the dm chair before even being a player its not all that different, your just rping the world and coming up with outcomes for the player actions, theres also no better way to learn than by simply doing it

I'd use a thread in Play-By-Post. (Easier to search than a PM thread and functionality like that.)
As for advice, I find for myself that planning out a lot of stuff first helps me. I tried running one PbP where I was hot on an idea, had a decent goal of overall setting, but didn't have the battlemaps/etc. figured out thinking I'd be able to wing it along. And then that contributed to some overall burnout for me, which also ended up killing that campaign in the collateral.
You might find things different. But I know I'm the kind of person that has to have a bunch of stuff planned, which makes it easier to improvise when needed.
