So I came up with an idea for what the heck is up with Harvest Hunters.
You know how sorcerers have magic in their bloodline, despite usually being a completely different species from their arcane progenitor? Well, I had this interesting idea: Genetic Runes.
Magic as a concept has a very specific source in DnD: the weave, which is usually the words of gods echoing or something. What if the weave needs specific patterns to create specific effects? Not just visible ones, but say, audible ones, ones that happen in four dimensions (IE specific movements), patterns of materials, and so on? So... here's my thought:
Every magical creature has a genetic rune. Each genetic rune consists of genetic sigils, which grant unique abilities. These sigils are literally genetic, consisting of DNA, where the patterns of the different eldritch nucleotides determine the effects of the rune. It gets increasingly granular, but all that really matters is the runes and sigils.
It takes a very specific marinade to strengthen the rune enough for it to be absorbed after eating, but once you have consumed a genetic rune that does not belong to you, your nature changes due to the heresy committed. Once you have a rune, you can alter it by replacing sigils (obtained by devouring more creatures), but you cannot change the shape of the rune itself. Vampire powers remain vampire powers, and dragon powers remain dragon powers. You can get fire breath with vampire powers, but that won't make you a dragon.
Now, you might be thinking, "Couldn't you make your own rune?" Good question! No! You think someone who had the brilliant idea of marinading and eating a vampire would know how to alter genetic code? Biotech is still in its infancy today. Unless you get some fiends or daelkyr on it, I doubt you're gonna get any reasonably useful magic from it, even assuming they can alter something so specific.

My only question is how it’d be implemented into the game, and which game you plan on implementing it into.
That's the thing: it's flavor. It explains the modular abilities of the class I'm making.
Ohhh, yeaaa! My silly ADD brain skipped right over the first sentence.
I do think it’d be a pretty neat concept to explain the Dragonmarks in Eberron as well. So you could transplant that mechanic right into your own setting, without needing the lore they have on houses and whatnot.
