Vitus isn't actually kicked out. We just need the rival gangs and Xanathar to believe we're turning on each other. Then they send forces, not expecting a difficult battle with a team member gone, and we launch such a large counterattack that the rival gangs will have to completely halt their operations. Ah, mind games.
