So I always thought spirit was your drive to do something, and souls was just what contained yourself. The mind, heart and body is just what your physical appearance and ability is but doesn't hinder the ability or appearance of your spirit, which is why ghosts in pop culture generally look way different from when they were alive.

It all makes sense in my head at least.

The spirit in my D&D worlds is your ethereal form. If you die in my world, your spirit lingers in your body for a bit while it's trying to figure out that you're now dead, but then leaves to the Ethereal Plane. It looks generally the same as you do, but ghostly, and is what contains your soul. If your spirit is destroyed, your soul is spat out into the ethereal plane and is lost, typically becoming a will o' wisp.

We're having two separate conversations. My first post on the subject of souls in this thread was about D&D worlds, but Joel started a tangent more about the real world. There's the discussion about the metaphysical nature of souls, spirits, the mind, and so on in D&D worlds, and then there's the one on what the prerequisites for having a soul is, and when you meet those. If you want to talk about spirits from the current discussions, that would be in the D&D world conversation.
