Small niche audience, decent reputation, lack of competitive rivals. Sounds like what I'd personally want. I don't think I'd so much need to be The Best Magician when according the rules of this thought experiment I'm the only actual wizard in the world. I think the thrills of Vegas and overblown reputation as Sin City would run too roughly against the grain of my current life living in a small quiet town, where I entertain a small niche audience of decent reputation, with weekly wizardly games. Broadway would keep me doing what I love but on a larger scale while minimizing the chances of becoming too big for my magically infused britches. Nothing kills a wizard faster than fame, and arrogance.
Though I suppose if you're doing the whole "always have a clone handy" becoming the greatest performance magician in the world every couple decades could be a fun little game.
I would probably hire myself out to the military or some other government thing to help them with finding people and things like that. Use school of illusion to make myself fun at party's, and other things like that.
Then I cast "Mold Earth" to make an improvised tomb for myself, then place myself inside that hole, and while still holding the portion of ground/Earth in the air, I put that portion over me as a cover to be undetected.....
Tadaaaaaaaaa !!!! 30 % chance to be undetected... 30 % chance to be suffocated by the lack of air, and 30% to be my own Home...... :-)
1) ...buy a couple solar panels, cast a couple Light cantrips, and call the utility company to cancel my electricity service.
2) ...say 'bwahahahah'.
3) ...curse myself for not getting one level of druid so i could create water and turn off my water bill. of course there's wall of water and watery sphere, but that water disappears so i could take a shower and flush, but can't drink it or water the garden with it. level20wizardenviousofalevel1druid.

1. Would not work. The light is not daylight and does not produce much. Plus you'd have to cast it over and over again all day. Now if you had a big battery, then using spells like shocking grasp, lightning bolt etc could recharge it infinitely.
3. Use Wish spell to recreate Create Water at 8 th level. OR Use 9th Level Gate linked to the Sea, then Wish to Purify the water making it drinkable. You could use Stone Shape and Mold Earth to make a well!

good point on the wish....just fill up a tank.
i do think light would work though. it's not sunlight, but it produces bright light. i suspect it'd be enough to get a solar panel to output....just as you can get the ol' solar-powered calculator to work indoors...i could handle casting a few cantrips per day....although i suppose the first thing i'd need to do is find a focus otherwise i'd have to go hunting for fireflies. lol. but yeah, lightning bolt would be even better

I was thinking, incorrectly, the solar panels used UV radiation or something - but apparently they run off any light.
In which case, Making a big bunch of Continual Flame spells active around it would solve the issue very effectively. Since, they produce the same light as a Light spell / Torch and last forever without producing heat (solar panels don't need heat either).
The 50 gp ($5,000) can be bypassed using Wish.
The spell would also save on electricity by just using them instead of normal electric lightning. Oh, and since you're wishing them into existence you wouldn't even need to bother taking it as a spell choice (beneficial since there are no tomes to copy from).

Maybe, it can backfire and then you can never cast it again.
Best to stick to using it to cast spells.
Yeah, with only doing spells, you can cast it once a day, and then be able to resurrect people, create clones and simulacrums of yourself, create a magic jar from a simulacrum, and a bunch of other awesome things.
Maybe I could become a game show host. "Make a Wish!"

Given that this exercise states you are the only wizard in the world. Hogwarts isn't going to be fun given that you'd have to create it yourself and then just be alone in it because you're the only person able to learn or do magic.

Wizards in the Harry Potter universe are actually closer in flavor to Sorcerers, especially Wild Magic Sorcerers, as their spells can backfire.
And also because you can be a fantastic wizard in that universe while stubbornly refusing to learn anything unless forced to.
As for me, I think I'd go to Washington DC, load up on Enchantment and Illusion spells, and watch the hilarity ensue.
Harry Potter Wizards train to learn to control their powers. Like, Harry Potter making the glass disappear in the zoo terrarium, that is totally a wild-magic sorcerer thing to do. They do magic without knowing or trying.
(also, I'm agreeing with you here, just adding)

You wake up a wizard, the first thing you do is READ YOUR SPELLBOOK!

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Evocation Wizard: Variant Human (it's a human) with Magic Initiate Wizard as its feat (as a level 20 Wizard I can use Wish to get this anyway).
Stats: 20s across the board. Thanks Wish.
Spellbook: All spells available. Thanks Wish.
1st Wish: 2 (if 33 or less, lose ability to cast wish ever again)
Probably don't get the other two.
If using wish for anything other than replicating spells you have 33% chance of never being able to cast it ever again.
