I just noticed that two of my homebrews were renamed without my knowledge. One of which I half appreciate because it had a typo has been driving me nutty and I didn’t want to have to republish it. So I am glad that “A Pair of Shield” now reads “Pair of Shields” so for that I thank you. But now it is grammatically incorrect without the “A” in front of it. Oh well, win/loss I came out ahead on that one, so thank you. Truly, I do mean that.
The other is a spell that had been named “A Grasping Light” and is now just “Grasping Light.” I see that was done with a ton of other people’s homebrews as well. I suppose that was done to redistribute them so that homebrews that didn’t start with the word “A” would get a better chance of being noticed. It was the only homebrewed spell I had that started with “A.” I had named it that way as a particular aesthetic choice for the spell, (and before everyone else had also started naming things that way) so I am a little irked about it. However I do understand why the change was made, and so I don’t really mind it all that much.
I do wish I had received some sort of notification that it had been done though. That is legitimately what has me upset about the whole thing. I understand why it was done. I understand why it was necessary. I hope DDB can understand why I would have liked to be notified instead of finding out the hard way. Trying to attach that spell to something else has been driving me nuts for several minutes. Because I had republished it several times, the homebrew generator still lists versions 1 through 1.8. If I wanted to attach that spell to a new homebrew subclass or feat, I have always had to scroll down and select the last one in the list to get version 1.9 (the current active version in “My Collection”). I was attaching the last one in the list, but it wasn’t working. It was driving me crazy that I couldn’t get it to work. I had no idea that I had been selecting version 1.8 by mistake because I had no idea that I needed to instead attach “Grasping Light” all of a sudden after all this time. Can you understand the source of my frustration? If versions 1-1.8 weren’t still cluttering up the field, I would have noticed right away, but they are so I didn’t. If I had been notified about the change I would have known and not wasted the time, but I wasn’t so I did.
Youse all gotta change stuff, I get that and will offer no argument about it. But please, next time, gimme some warning that it was done so I don’t go nuts until I figure it out for myself. Please. 🙏 Thank you for listening. Keep being awesome.
Firstly, I want to apologise as I hadn't notified you when I was ensuring homebrew creations weren't in breech of the Homebrew Rules & Guidelines. There were a number of public submissions that started with errant spaces, symbols, numbers, and as you pointed out, starting with "A_". As these push the Homebrew submissions to the first pages of the listing, I had gone through to remove those characters to ensure there was no submission "claiming" the first page.
These sorts of homebrew checks have been done before in the past, which is perhaps why you hadn't seen other submissions previously. Again, I want to apologise, as this was my error in not notifying, it had traditionally been that those homebrew submissions changed to align with the rules had been either incorrectly labelled or were in breech of the rules.
I'm more than happy to reinstate the name you had selected before, please let me know if you would like this to occur.
Dear Sorce, Timer, and all the other wonderfully dedicated people who work for DDB,
Really, it’s not a big deal. I was just frustrated and overreacted. As I said, I totally understand why it happened. I’m also not really even upset that it happened. I was just frustrated at the time is all. They are just names for made up things at the end of the day, nothing actually important enough to worry about. “Grasping Light” vs “A Grasping Light” really doesn’t make much difference. (Although “Pair of Shields” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as “A Pair of Shields,” in particular since the name is repeated a few times in the body of that feat so now it no longer matches. But it’s still not all that important. Besides, I realized that I forgot to add the action to that feat which will allow the character sheet to display the reaction that the feat grants, so I have to go back and re-re-republish it eventually anyway 🙄, so I can just change it myself then.)
If you really want to do me a favor (and everyone else too for that matter), remove the nearly-but-not-actually “archived” older versions of my homebrews from whatever list they’re in that they keep haunting me in the homebrew generator. I understand why they are left in system for people who already added those older versions. But I have removed them from my collection, so if I accidentally add those old versions of things to something else, they cannot work correctly on the character sheet. Yet despite that, they are still listed as selectable when adding things like spells and feats to other homebrews.
If the system only showed me the version(s) I actually have in my collection, I wouldn’t have really been irritated. That was the real reason why I was actually frustrated (besides not knowing that the changes had been made). That’s been an issue since before I started here on DDB. If that was not a factor, I truly wouldn’t have been upset enough to write this thread the other day. Adding the wrong versions of things is annoying more so since there is nothing I can actually do to remedy the situation. I actually went so far as to add a hyphen to the beginning of another spell just so I could find the finalized version easier in the homebrew creator (although I suppose that might have been removed as well).
I just wish youse all could find a way to get that cleared up and still leave them available for the users who have them.
I’m honestly sorry to have created such a fuss over something so genuinely unimportant. You (the DDB Mods) are always very generous with your time and assistance. You do an incredible job fixing glitches and herding cats (us users) at the same time. You have always been more than fair to me (and any of the other users I have interacted with for that matter), and more than patient with the blithering of at least this chuckle head (your attention to this thread is a case in point).
I know that you all have enough on your plates. You have the new character sheet framework to troubleshoot, the dice roller just got released for Alpha, the Combat tracker is also still in Alpha and the Encounter Builder is still in Beta, there are a couple of apps that you have to deal with, and you have the scores of other user issues/complaints to deal with every day on top of that. I legitimately regret having added to your burden by posting this thread.
In other words, I know you have more important things to worry about than this minor annoyance that I blew completely out of proportion. Besides, if you make an exception for me it sets a precedent that others might try to take advantage of, and that’s not fair to you. Thank you for your consideration on this matter, but really it’s not worth worrying about. I mean it, it’s okay. By the end of that day I was already cooled down about the whole thing. Thank you all for everything you do for us users, this site truly would not work without you. I appreciate everything you do for us, this need not be one of them.
I've got one. My A Farewell to Arms spell has been renamed "Farewell to Arms". It's not a huge deal but it's kind of annoying because it messes with the joke. It certainly wasn't my intent to score points as evidenced by its horrendous rating (by people who have no sense of humor =P), granted it's very overpowered at 3rd level.

It’s not that big a deal. I was just frustrated at the time. Not really important.
