So I'm making a homebrew race and I gave it a subrace with its own abilities but in the character builder I cant search the parent race only the subrace appears and it has all of the parent races traits and ability scores this makes the subrace so broken do I have to make the subrace separate from the parent race or am I doing something wrong?

The way subraces work is they get all the base race traits and then their own traits. You maybe want to create a variant race instead of a subrace s it can replace certain base race traits with variant traits.
I was basically trying to give the parent race and the subrace their own traits with the subrace only taking some of the parent races traits I didn't know that the subrace would take all the parent races traits and ability score is this more of a varients job? and I think I understand the system the parent race isn't a true race it's just a templet for the subraces but how do I make the parent race its own race and subrace only take some stuff from the parent race and have its own traits?

Remake the “subraces” as “variants” and then the OG race will be available to select and the variants will only take the traits from the base race that you don’t replace with the variant traits.
Heya sorry for replying in this older thread, i just thought it would be easier since this thread is talking about a similar issue but basically Im having a similar issue where the subrace isnt appearing as a subraces for the main parent race, making the parent race not appear as an option in the race selection part of making a character. The subraces appear as a race with the parents traits added(as expected) but i didnt want it appearing as its own slot, i thought it would appear underneath the parent race like how other subraces work. So im trying to fix it but stuck on it atm.

What do you mean it is broken? Subraces are supposed to have the parent race's traits. That is what subrace means. Is something different happening?
Depends what you are trying to do. Subrace is intended to handle things like High Elf vs Wood Elf. (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#Elf)
Both share a common set of "Elf" traits (that is the parent race)
Then each has their own set of individual subrace traits.
These are the parent traits
