One thing I would say in favour of those looking at if DDB will get VTT is they only say it is not on the short term roadmap insead of not being planned for at all. Plus with the encounter builder and all the follow on pieces they are adding I imagine VTT is not an impossible though for maybe 2020.

My group is meeting in person and I was wondering which is best for us to use as our grid? Only I would have to buy cause the rest will all be looking at one screen with one account controlling everything. The main thing I don't want to have to do is buy multiple of content. I want to use DnDBeyond for books and characters and Roll20 or Fantasy Ground for the map and grid.
NOTE: You will need to setup a zendesk account (which is not your DnDBeyond.com account, the team uses this 3rd party software). It's easy to do and your votes are needed!
The best experience I've had to date is the BeyondRoll20 chrome extension with the non-shaped 5e sheets in Roll20. The only downside is the developer discontinued it so you need to download it from a third party website.

Just saying. The moment DnDBeyond.com goes into VTT space I'm happy to switch my Roll20 Pro Sub money over to DnDBeyond.com. I'd be more than happy to pay for a VTT Bundle on DnDBeyond.com

Beyond 20 offers a Chrome browser extension that works on all platforms and allows you to use DDB to roll or post info into Roll20 campaign. As long as you have both open and configured correctly it works awesomely...
Just adding that Roll20 is too good not to use for a Virtual Tabletop Experience right now, and I would easily recommend a Plus or Pro Subscritpion going hand in hand with D&D Beyond Player or Master Tier sub - for the DMs. I also very much prefer the book layout and general integration that DDB has (current Source book bundle with CoS) but that the benefits of an adventure or 2 from Roll20's site are hard to overlook (I own CoS on both Roll20 and DDB, and I'm pretty happy with the choice for time saved and such). I'm definitely keeping an eye on both the eventual development of a VTT for DDB, along with any price plan changes associated with. I'm most worried that in jockeying for position over that experience, we may see a general loss rather than a gain to the community as a whole. Fingers crossed.
I would love to see some kind of linking of the books between Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds.. its alot of money to buy all the books on each platform.. there needs to be some kind of solution or license key to use so you don't end up spending thousands of dollars just to play on one platform or another.

As nice as that would be, they're all independent companies. I don't think they have much incentive to allow content purchased elsewhere to be used on their platforms (particularly when they'd probably still have to pay the licensing fee to WotC). Even if WotC wanted to waive the fee (which Hasboro would never let them do), I doubt it'd make sense from a business standpoint from either company. I think the best we can hope for are systems like what DDB has where you can manually enter information you have from books/other platforms.

With the Beyond 20 extension you don’t need the books in Roll20, only adventure content (I.e. tokens and maps).
Beyond 20 is really a great plugin. That guy's a hero.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
You would have to say that the D&DBeyond business model pushes you onto Roll20. We are more and more gaming through video-link, but, from a DM perspective, Roll20 makes better sense. I cannot see why, given that I have hard copies of the key source books, I would buy content through D&DBeyond. when I can buy it from Roll20 and it is so much easier to deliver that content. I really don't understand the business model, why cede this ground to Roll20. Very disappointing in my view.

It all depends on what kind of digital tools for D&D one is looking for. In your case, it sounds like purchasing from Roll20 and not here makes sense. That’s fair.
Keep in mind that when DDB first launched, their intent was primarily to provide digital tools for players sitting around a physical table. They were very clear back in those days that they weren’t a VTT and weren’t trying to be. There were plenty of VTT options, they were looking to fill in other holes. I’ve been using DDB’s tool since the public beta first launched, and that’s precisely how I used it at first: as an aid for the in-person games I was running.
Pretty quickly it became evident that there was wide-spread interest in DDB expanding to include VTT-like tools, and the pandemic only intensified that need. But even then, not all of us who moved to online play in one form or another opted for Roll-20 or other VTTS where content could be purchased. Some folks use theater of the mind; I use Owlbear Rodeo. And others who do use Roll20 or the like use third party extensions to connect their content here. Different strokes for different folks. DDB’s business model doesn’t fit what you need, but it does fit what a significant group of people need.
Have come to personally prefer Foundry VTT so have to agree they should just focus on what their good (amazing!) at and leave the VTT stuff to those that focus on VTTs.
Thanks for the response, and yes I get it - different strokes. I might check out Owlbear Rodeo. I am an old 2e gamer that has moved straight to 5e. There is a sense in which I don't like the VTT, I would much prefer to be face to face around a real table. I enjoy Doing but trying to work it out under COVID.

I was happy to learn today that those dev updates are now happening on a weekly basis! Thursdays at 9am US Pacific time.

Free Roll20 should be enough if your content is on DnDBeyond.com

Is there a link to the 3rd party website?

Agreed, and it is on the roadmap! Roll20 is great but i prefer buying my books on beyond.
I don’t use any other sites, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with
