^ Yep this. Subclasses would feel a lot more satisfying and provide more variety/mechanics if they could be 50/50 with the main class, rather than the 20/80 which they are now.
The concept and logic of moving the content burden onto subclasses is fine. The execution failed.
A Swordmage/Magus class could probably work as a paladin subclass in that system, but in the current system needs to be its own class. Same with occultist and warlord.

It would be easiest to convert the Paladin class into the swordmage thingie. Divine Smite is already built in and can be re-flavored into whatever element the writer wants
Except, that wouldn't work. For now, lets call the Magus/Swordmage/Duskblade the Gish. The Gish class needs a spell list of arcane spells, needs arcane abilities instead of divine ones, and needs their own class.
You can't do that, that's racist.

We'll just have to wait for further clarification.
Anyway, no one seemed to have completed my challenge from earlier, yet we still seem to be discussing the feasibility of certain classes. Again, to the people who have argued against Witches, Psions, Warlords, Magus, or any of the other classes, make a subclass equivalent of that before discussing any of those further, please.

Honestly, I think that out of those classes you could probably most easily do a Gish as class feature variants for Paladin. I would still prefer a full class, but if they were comprehensive variants it could work.

I don't think that would work, honestly. Why should a Gish make an oath? Why should a Gish not be able to use the Two-Weapon Fighting Style? Why should a Gish have the Paladin spell list? Most of the other stuff you could change with Class Feature Variants, but these are integral parts of the Paladin class.

It is insensitive to Githyanki, diminishing their racial identity. It also implies that such a person is evil.

I dont think so, but it doesn't only apply to the Gith. A gish just means a githyanki Spellcaster/fighter. Plus they dont exist, so I dont think they are offended. I would be flattered.

No, it was originally coined to refer to Gith Fighter/Magic Users. Now it has been appropriated to refer to any Magic-as-Melee type builds.

Okay. Gish is a term no longer specific to githyanki, which are imaginary, so there's no problem with calling a martial arcane half-caster a Gish. I'm using it because Magus is stolen from Pathfinder.

Eh, mostly the broken thing is Hexblade, because a one level dip converts a Bard (Swords/Valor) or Paladin (any) from MAD to SAD.
not that much of a problem tbh. they still need Con and Dex for AC and HP

Big difference between "I need a 14" and "I need a 16 at level 1 and a 20 by level 8".
