I see no reason the store bought books can't have a one time coupon printed inside them for 50% off the book. People are less likely to steal something that they have to pay for anyway. Also stores should keep books plastic wrapped and behind counters and only have a display copy out,. that's just smart business.
That's great for future book purchases, but not so great for those who already have them. Also, should WotC then have to reimburse Curse for the difference? And if so, wouldn't they then just raise the price of the books?

Exactly that.
If the cost of the physical book is $30 and the cost of the book on D&D Beyond is also $30, then buying a book, with a coupon for D&D Beyond, would set you back $60.
Personally, I think that would be awful, as it takes away the option to just have the physical book, for those who don't want D&D Beyond.
A PDF is not possible due to the ability to then pirate the content. And e-books that require special software that can check a license to prevent such a thing would be unpopular. The app they'll provide will likely have full search functionality and the same easy navigation the website has. And with that you'll have offline access.
Do you really think that a pdf makes it any easier to pirate D&D books? I'm pretty sure the black and white OCR pdf of the PHB was available as a torrent within a week of release.

Why should they both cost $30?
Hypothetically:
If you buy the physical book, it contains a discount code to also get the book on DDB for 50% off.
If you buy the book on DDB, it comes with a coupon to get the physical book for 50% off.

Somebody has to pay for that 50%. If Curse offers a 50% discount for buying the physical copy (something they had no hand in making or selling) then they're eating that 50% as a loss.

The way I see it, they profit 50% instead of ZERO. I have all the physical books, but I won't pay the same price for a digital copy, so they get ZERO money from me as opposed to something at a discounted price.

Something I've learned over years of handling commercials is that, no matter what commercial model is chosen, or what the price point is, there will always be a cut-off line where people consider the purchase unreasonable and there will always be people that state that the model is unreasonable.
It's just not possible to be in business and keep 100% of potential customers happy.
The D&D Beyond site is going to continue to add functionality - some of the campaign tools are going to be pretty awesome, so hopefully at some point in the future, you'll change your mind.
If not, that's also ok - whilst we would love for all D&D players to find this site useful, we're all aware that some just won't get value from it and would rather continue with the standard books - and that's ok.
What matters is that we're all playing/running D&D and enjoying the hobby. :)

Dont get me wrong, I want all the best for D&D beyond to be sucessful! I believe the people behind it made an amazing job, and I hope they reach their objectives. And I agree with all that you said, I still enjoy D&D, but from my point of view it doesn't add value enough for me and my group to pay the price since we already have all the books.
Why can't we just buy one digital product that works across platforms, if I buy a module in Steam, DriveThruRPG, Piazo or DMsGuild licence transfers to Fantasy Grounds and with two of those you also get the pdf. Why can't I buy a licence for the Monster Manual, PHB or DMG, and then be able to use it in D&D Beyond, Fantasy Grounds, Roll20 or any other digital program.

They profit less
Exactly. This is a huge project their tackling and continuing to tackle. Devs don't work for free. They need to make a profit to be able to put out a quality product. Myself, I've purchased the legendary bundle and the master tier subscription (I don't own any physical books, but my roommate does). It's an incredible value to me as I now own all of the content permanently (albeit with the only access to it is via website) and getting the 15% off future content is nice, and I can share all of that content with other players.
The site functions very well and with content sharing, it's basically like I'm passing the book around had I owned them, but conveniently stored in an easy to use website.
No I am not willing to pay for 5e digital content at the moment although I have been very excited about this from when the site was first announced. I am still excited to see where it will go and what content will be released in the future.
I really like the site and all the work you guys have done. I love the homebrew, and would love to see homebrew full core classes and races. I would probably purchase at least the DMG, PHB, Sword Coast Adventurer, and Volos if more homebrew options were available so I can create some of my existing characters fully. I also miss the UA content not being available (Revised Ranger would be worth paying for :D )
Part of me really wants the subclasses in the digital content, but at the moment I have no real need for it because although my characters need those subclasses, they would still be missing homebrewed other options like homebrewed race, subrace, background, etc or content that is not yet available.
One good story I want to share: I put some of my characters partially into the system, and was astounded to find I had actually been miscalculating my plus to hit for one of my characters and it was actually much greater than what I had calculated at in sessions....this led to suddenly the character actually hitting more often and dealing lots more damage and in general led to a much more satisfying encounter...So I do really appreciate it as it has already saved me from my own faulty mathematical skills. So thanks.
Again, congratulations on the launch yesterday. Good job.
I said I was willing to pay for both a subscription and a one-time fee as long as the features supported it and I did buy many of the books and paid for an annual subscription.
I feel that the core/reference books (PHB, DMG, MM, Volo's) are well worth paying for, even though I have the print versions for all of them.
I am on the fence about the APs. I bought CoS even though I already have the book. I think it *may* make sense to get the AP if you don't have the book, but I don't see it adding a great deal of value beyond making the content searchable. But I am withholding judgement until I use it in play. Having multiple pages and maps open in multiple tabs and being able to share images with players with a second screen will be nice, but as a long-time user of RealmWorks, I can't help but being frustrated by trying to navigate through an AP in the DnD Beyond format
As for the Master subscription. I think of it as a way to support continued development. It has almost no use to me right now. I was hoping to use it to share content with my players, but if I share I have to share everything. There is no way to limit what I share. I don't want to share the AP material. I'm paying nearly $60 a year so I can view player character sheets and not have advertisements show up in content I paid for.
So I have a master subscription and purchased the legendary bundle.
When I go into the monster listing, select a monster and click the "View Details Page" button I am still unable to see the flavor text for that monster. Why is that?

I totally agree, I just made a significant expense buying all the Core books, the sword coast guide, and two adventures. The expenses pile up. especially when you can get all this content online for free. I'm willing to pay for the subscription. no problem! but please have some extra discount for the people that have a hard copy of the material.
You shouldn't be taxed this high to support the company!

Some recommended reading for people who: a) think WotC is trying to nickel and dime you by asking you to pay for content again b) are concerned about what you're getting for your money compared with the physical books c) are concerned about the pricing structure
I hear, in development, it's not often the devs that determine when something launches. ;)

I play a medium amount of board games.

A few months ago WotC announced the official translations of D&D 5e. But what about DDB? We will have all DDB content translated too?
