09. Undead Sailor (x3) - two of them are turned/roaming and effectively out of combat for now;
MAP:
NOTES: I assume that the Driftglobe is shedding Light from where Gulp is, although it is currently out of play. Same applies to Bubbles' Candle of the Deep, which is in play. The light blue musical note token represents Shanty's Tentacle of the Deeps. The sand-colored square centered on Gar represents his protective cube, but it is invisible and not all players realize it is in play. I am placing Shaolar back in the map for convenience, but not all player know where he is.
There are no changes in the lair at this point. Nothing happens this time around.
(Bubbles, Gulp, and Shanty are up next. I'll remind Bubbles that attacks against the invisible enemy have disadvantage, Gulp that he would still be considered squeezed for the first 10 feet worth of movement assuming he is moving toward Shaolar, and Shanty that he is under the effects of Sanctuary.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((Looks like AO row allows to approach Shaolar without squeezing?))
Nobody followed but the enemy was so close, Gulp could not simply leave. Not to mention, even to his whale-brain now it was clear, that keeping that mage out of combat was a good idea. Gulp squeezed inside the "cave" to block Shaolar again (and eat if possible, too). ((Posting with disadvantage still))
Bite: Attack: 17 Damage: 22 (if a hit - a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or be swallowed by the whale.)
(In case there is enough space there - the first attack will be with the tail: Attack: 25 Damage: 18)
(@Blue: Amble was within their shell during Gulp's last turn, so they probably missed the whale's attempt at communicating.)
Feeling a bit safer than before, Amble pops out of their shell (bonus action) and slowly swims out of the nook where they laid Undertow to rest. Noticing Bubbles is engaged in battle with something, Amble takes a wide arc around the area, just to be safe, and moves in a circle to eventually reach Bubbles side {AR-29}. The tortle tells the locathah barbarian: "I'll support you as I can."
END OF INITIATIVE ROUND 9
As soon as he hears this he yells back "There's something here....attack it or distract it (Help Action) as you can!!!"

Whale-Gulp's movement is a bit strenuous as he tries to finish squeezing his gigantic body through the tight opening. Once successful, the whale monk swims right up to the water genasi spellcaster and swings his tail at him. For the first time in this battle, Shaolar's Mage Armor does what it is intended to do and prevents the whale tail from making contact with his body.
Shaolar's defensive spell does little to avoid the whale's bite. Whale-Gulp finally gets a good chomp in and, before he can try anything, the genasi finds himself being swallowed by the aquatic mammal. Gulp can tell that he is swallowing a creature who is still alive, albeit barely. (Shaolar Quanderil takes 20 piercing damage and is SWALLOWED.)

(@Shadow: Yeah, I don't see why wouldn't Emboldened Bond apply.)
-> Homebrewed roll here: 10
While Gar is occupied with Sandlot, Shanty aims a beam on negating energy at the cube encompassing him and the others. For the first time, those inside the cube can feel it rumble and shake somewhat, something it didn't do even when hit ferociously by Whale-Gulp's tail. To Shanty's dismay, the cubic cage remains in place. To Sandlot's surprise, he can feel some of Wave's power leaving the magical weapon.
Noticing that he weakened Gar's trident's power in a manner, and having a fair understanding of all things arcane (passive arcana), Shanty guesses he could weaken Wave further if he were to aim his Horn of Blasting at the cube imprisoning him.

Taking the strikes that seemingly came out of nowhere, Bubbles's focus is centered squarely on the invisible 'creature' he engaged with last round, seeking any movement in the water around him to give him some idea of where to strike, but ultimately using the large sweeping swings of Last Rites that saw the blade strike true previously (attacking recklessly to compensate for the disadvantage, with bless), fully prepared to take the wounds in return.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Bubbles asks Amble for specific help and continues to engage the invisible foe in a slightly more careful manner than usual. The strategy pays off, and the amorphous blob of animated water diminishes in size. (Malignant Sea Current takes 22 magical piercing damage.)
Amble replies: "Your suggestion... might be too close to... violating my own personal code... but I'll help... somehow."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Umberlee will have you!" Gar claims in a loud voice. The water within the cube and specifically around the locathah becomes denser.
-> CON saving throw vs. Umberlee's Wake (Semi-slow) {DC 18}:
Barnacle: 24
Sandlot: 26
Shanty: 12
Barnacle whirls Fork around, dispelling the effect immediately around him. Sandlot and Shanty rely on their magical protection to avoid some of the effects, but they are not completely safe.
-> Sandlot and Shanty must choose between an Action and a Bonus Action in their turns, and cannot take Reactions. When taking any action that would grant them multiple attacks, they instead can only make one attack. Other effects are successfully avoided.
(Sandlot is up next. He is grappled and affected by Semi-Slow only as described above. He can repeat the CON saving throw at the end of his turn.)
The look of pain on Sandlot proves to be fleeting one, as he again slips from the grasp of the claw and just looks on disapprovingly at Gar. "No.... No she will not.... Not again... Not ever..." The old Locathah said, his rasp more pronounced as the very water seemed determined to try and restrict his movements. Through some effort he manages to put away his music box, and with a smile of regret said, "Strong... is her hold in you.... Stronger than... even once I.... I'm sorry... that you cannot know peace yet.... But help still... I will... we will..." He said as he held out a hand to Gar and uttered a single word in elvish.
Once again a mote of light appears briefly before gar, before exploding into a purifying wave of flame should Gar prove not quicker on the draw.
Despite being somewhat constrained by the sea itself, Sandlot fights back Umberlee's influence. First, he slips out of Gar's grasp once more. Then, he force a flicker of holy flame to appear near his foe. Gar snuffs it with his claw.
Although it failed to damage Gar, the distraction is enough to buy Sandlot enough time to regain control of the water immediately touching his scales.
-> Sandlot is no longer grappled nor affected by the Semi-Slow effect.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(OOC: But does he target the right Gar Shatterkeel the second time around? 11. Yes, yes he does!)
Barnacle forces Gar to feel the bite of his own trident. The Umberlee & Olhydra faithful squirms for a moment. (Gar Shatterkeel takes 21 magical piercing damage.)
LEGENDARY ACTION
Gar retaliates, but not against the locathah that just hit him:
Very aware that this is his last chance to get out of this fight alive, Shaolar tries to stab Whale-Gulp from within:
-> Chill Touch vs. Whale-Gulp: Attack: 27 Damage: 16
Shaolar puts all that he has behind his last-ditch effort. Although the whale feels some pain coming from inside, it hardly causes it to react. (Whale-Gulp takes 16 necrotic damage.)
