I'm fairly new to creating homebrew stuff in DnD Beyond but I have a player who is a fire genasi samurai fighter that later on that will be able to have a "transformation" where they take on certain traits of a fire elemental:
50ft movement speed
(1d8) fire damage on all melee attacks
Any creature that makes a melee attack at the player within 5 feet takes (1d10) fire damage
(Hesitant on this one) On a melee attack, if the target is a creature or a flammable object, it ignites. Until a creature takes an action to douse the fire, the target takes (1d10) fire damage at the start of each of its turns.
I'm wondering if the best way to homebrew this into DnD beyond would be through a feat, a magic item, or a spell somehow.
And if there's any feedback on any of this I'm glad to hear it.
Keep in mind that temporary effects such as transformations are not currently supported by DDB. It’ll just be “always on,” and up to the player to track when the bonuses apply and when they don’t.
I would make it as a feat so you can add Actions to it for the damage rolls since you can’t add actions to magic items.
I would consider either dropping the damage added to melee attacks to 1d4, or else only apply it to the first melee attack that hits per turn. Keep in mind there’s no way to make this roll automatic so the play will need to manually roll it and add it for themselves whenever appropriate.
I would set the damage to opponents who hit the PC to a flat number equal to their Constitution modifier or their Spellcasting modifier or something just to speed up gameplay because rolling all those extra dice will slow things down a lot.
I would not include a damage over time mechanic as they’re a pain to track and get forgotten a lot.
