Squirrels are Chaotic Evil Aberrations in my campaign. Geese are the fiends. Squirrels and Geese fight often.
Anchovies are dimensional beings that can gain the powers of those they touch. In my surprisingly interesting “dream world” (the world of my dreams seems to have a single canon, somehow), at least.
You think your dreams have canon? Even the number of cannons in my dreams is canon.
same lol
Yes. Dreams can sometimes actually come up with interesting monsters and stuff. Maybe I should make a setting from them...
Yep, that's how I came with the first boss for my campaign.
Sorcerer succeeded a history check on a living statue of a fiend. DM: "You, as a scholar, know this demon's name is Koschei." Sorcerer: "Gesundheit!"
(Trivia: The DM borrowed Koschei the Deathless from Russian folklore for one of the campaign's BBEGs.)

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
(This happened in an encounter that occurred yesterday. And yes, it is a reference to Lord of the Rings.)
As the Nazgul attacks, Pungor's arm pops off just like a lego piece. There isn't even any blood, probably because he used fire magic to cauterize the wound (both the disconnected arm and his shoulder). "Well, this hurts tremendously." he says calmly.
DM: "A small halfling approaches you. He is mounted on a mastiff and is wearing captain's armor, and bears a lance. Greetings he says I am Linric the Small."
"You can't Deflect Missles if YOU are the missle!"
That reminds me of a moment in a my campaign where the monk deflected a cannonball that was filled with alchemical fire and threw it back at the cannon that shot it at him. There rest of the cannonballs all erupted in flames and destroyed the building.
Monk: The best way to beat fire is with fire.
Rogue: You are literally on fire right now!

THAT is exactly the sort of thing that makes Monks awesome...they have some pretty neat tricks.
First time I’ve ever heard of one deflecting a cannonball...amazing.

Ooh, this reminds me of something!
So, the DM gave the rogue a magic ring that emits an antimagic field so small that it's only useful for picking magical locks. The rogue decided to go and buy a bunch of cannonballs, which he then asked the party wizard to shrink. He used the shrunken cannonballs as ammo for his pistol, and stuck the ring to the end of it.
The DM's face was a mix of fury and awe when he saw that the rogue just used the nearly useless magic item to make a portable ship cannon.
Daerg(my setting's primary trickery God): "I am known by many names. 'The Prince of Trickery.' 'The Sire of Goblins.' 'The Everchanging Shadow.' 'You Bastard.' But you may call me 'Daerg.'
Holly (Half-Orc druid/barbarian): (to Daerg) "Hey, what are you doing tonight?" Me (DM): (mentally) "Oh no, oh God, oh no, oh God." Me: (out loud) *sigh* "roll performance" Holly: *rolls well over 20* Me: *sigh* *double facepalm* *sigh* "I'll allow it."

Hence the reason for >30 DCs and nat 20s restricted to attacks only.

What they said.
It wasn't because of the >20 roll, it was because of the >20 roll combined with the fact that it honestly seemed in character for that particular God in that particular moment.

Makes sense.
If the DM allows it, that's the final word.👍🏻
For my campaigns, I'll agree to the 5% always hit/miss rule (which gets modified by dis/advantage), but rolling a nat20 twice (with disadvantage) to see if a Small-sized character can intimidate a living mountain is right out.
Referring to that:
Paladin: I am going to cast command and say "Disrobe." *DM rolls for save* *facepalms at the nat 1* DM: You hear him say, "Okay!"
(The various bonus stats would have saved the BBEG if it was considered a 1 instead of a Fumble, but that essentially killed the BBEG. ...but still, it was funnier that way.)

I used to use noncombat crits. I didn't stop for realism so much as because some of my players were taking them too seriously and it was generally making my games a little worse. I still allow a nat 20 or nat one to mean something special, but only if the action would have succeeded anyway.

What I do is I have a nat 20 or nat 1 act as it would if it wasn't a crit, then I add something special, such as "A demon suddenly appears and tells you to play him a song. Make a performance check."
Gabalathan?
I have a weird sense of humor.
