I was wondering if there was any reason in 5e that there are no magic items that enhance your ability scores for any stat other than strength. i know in older editions of D&D there were ways to enhance all of your attributes. was this an oversight or is it intentional for some reason?
I'm not sure what item you looked at, but Headband of Intellect and Belt of Dwarvenkind enhance INT and CON, respectively. That's just off the top of my head; there are probably others.
i dont own everything but i have yet to see any item that enhances wisdom like a belt of giant strength enhances strength. nothing takes it up to that potential of 29. at best things could give it a max of +2 from book and +2 from ioun stone but the stone can only take you to 20. if you are naturally at 20 the stone does nothing. the book can take you up to a 22 but still nothing close to what a belt of storm giant strength does for your strength score.

Probably because the effects of an individual with extremely high STR are balanced with an individual with high WIS.

Exactly. General character balance does not get out-of-wack for any character with >20 STR. Spellcasters with >20 INT/WIS/CHA? That's a problem as your casting stat is also tied to the # of spells you can have prepared at any time, and the spell save DC for such a character would be extremely high to the point of being nearly impossible to pass.

I don't see that as being much of a problem. There are some monsters with ridiculous ability modifiers, quite a lot of monsters that have automatic advantage on ability checks, and an entire tier of monsters that have Legendary Resistance. It would make sense for an extremely intelligent Wizard to have a larger than expected list of prepared spells. It makes sense for a particularly powerful Sorcerer to have much harder spell DCs.
Yes, but “extremely powerful” was balanced around a Max of 20-22 in Spellcasting Ability and a +6 Proficiency bonus. That is sposta be “extremely powerful.”
It's a matter of gross damage output. A STR fighter (Fighter, Ranger, Barb, whatever) class has a chance at hitting and doing damage to a few to several targets. A caster will hit with area spells. The majority of area spells have saves rather than to-hit rolls so every target in the area will be hit and damaged. Increasing the number of times a caster can do this as well as making it more difficult to make a save throws things into unbalance.

If you disagree it's easy enough to make a Monocle of Ancient Wisdom or whatever and playtest it yourself.
