I'm a little confused in 5e on who/what Hold Person affects. The spell description says "Humanoids". Ogres are classed as Giants, but they are Humanoid (in shape, in equipment, etc.). Some places in the rules and Sage Advice, it looks like two arms, two legs, and a head = "humanoid", others it looks like it harkens back to 4e, with highly specific [tags].
So ultimately, I don't know. This came up in my game last night, when the cleric tried to hold person the ogre he was solo'ing. I'd appreciate some advice! Thanks!
Hold Person only works against creatures classified by the books as "Humanoid" of type, as far as I know. If it is any other category, you need Hold Monster.

Humanoid is a specific category of monster that includes most monsters of the humanoid form, but not all. You can discern if a monster is a [humanoid] (rather than humanoid shaped) by looking at the type in its stat block. For example, aarakocra is a humanoid, but iron golem is a construct.

This is one of those cases where you have to know when a word is being used in the colloquial sense("attack", "humanoid"), and when it's used in a game mechanics sense(the "Attack" action, creature type "Humanoid"). Thankfully the books *usually* capitalize when the word is being used in an official sense and not just casually.
in the case of Giants , Ogre's and other Humanoids that were but have yet been reclassified,, See previous Edition that you have used,, IE 1st allowed Ogres to be Held

I'm not entirely sure as to why you replied to my 2.5 year old comment, but giants and ogres are both giants in D&D 5th edition, not humanoids and as such cannot be targeted by hold person. The question pertains to D&D 5th edition, not older editions, and there's no suggestion that the rules are going to be changed so extensively to reclassify giants and/or ogres

An ogre is classed as a "Large Giant" and therefore isn't a humanoid so hold person will not work on it.

As far as I know Ogres could not be held back then either.
