Hey so for me, when I pick a forest gnome wizard, at third level it says I get the minor illusion cantrip or if I already know it I get a different cantrip. It's not letting me pick a different cantrip it still has me locked at 3 cantrips.

Hi there xXAlchemystXx,
where does it say this, can you link please?
The D&D Beyond Player's Handbook rules, which are an exact copy of the physical Player's Handbook, state:
You know the minor illusion cantrip. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.
All Forest Gnomes know this cantrip from level 1 and race is selected in the character builder prior to class.
I just generated a level 1 Forest Gnome Wizard and the racial cantrip is shown at the bottom of the spells section as below:
Yes that works correctly for me as well. But if I level my wizard to 2, and choose the school of illusion, on pg 118 it says “When you choose this school at 2nd level, you learn the minor illusion cantrip. If you already know this cantrip, you learn a different wizard cantrip of your choice. The cantrip doesn’t count against your number of cantrips known.”
but when I hit level 2, it doesn’t give me the option of adding a different cantrip, and because I already have 3 cantrips known, it won’t let me add a 4th cantrip.
Ah, understood - the School of Illusion feature "Improved Minor Illusion" seems to not check whether the character has gained the cantrip OUTSIDE of the Wizard class.
This is still an issue. I am running into the same problem. Really wish I could just add the spell to the normal spellbook instead of in that awkward racial spell area. Also, really want to be able to add an extra cantrip now that I've chosen school of illusion.

I agree this needs to be better. I am hopeful that the character sheet revamp will improve the spell listings on the character sheet. I'm also confident they are planning a fix for not being able to replace the cantrip, but sometimes those fixes take longer than any of us like. Until it is fixed, as a workaround, you can make a magic item with the cantrip you want.
I have just run into this issue and wanted to flag this still needs a fix, and hoping it will be in the character sheet revamp.
For anyone else encountering this bug there is a workaround:
When you have decided your alternate cantrip, for example "Message", create a homebrew magic item named after this cantrip and choose for it to add the cantrip selecting Int as the ability score. Go to your character and add the item. Find the item in your inventory and click "use" and the cantrip now appears below your spell list section. Not ideal but works.

These sorts of placement issues will be addressed in the new character sheet. Until then if you absolutely must have it in the same spell list, then the solution Cyb3rM1nd posted above me to use the homebrew tools will also work.
FWIW, I created a work-around for myself by creating a homebrew subclass modeled on the School of Illusion that was identical, except I changed the free cantrip at level 2.
This is still an ongoing issue. I just leveled a Forrest Gnome "School of Illusion" Mage to level two and have two "Minor Illusion" cantrips. I appreciate that somebody created a workaround, but I would really like to see native support.
I’m not really sure where to ask about this but it seems like a bug.
I’m making a forest gnome wizard (who starts with the ability to cast minor illusion) and when at 2nd level I chose the school of illusion, instead of giving me the option to pick a different cantrip to learn automatically, as the text states it should since I already know minor illusion, it just added a second minor illusion to my list of known spells.

I'll flag this for attention.

Yes yes! Sorry I didn’t know how to explain this properly. Thank you for looking into it.
Thanks, we were trying to add it to the spell book
EDIT:
It would be nice if it listed the spell just as they're listed in spell books.

Agreed

Thanks this is a good workaround for now!
This appears to still be an issue with the new character sheet revamp.
FWIW, I created a work-around for myself by creating a homebrew subclass modeled on the School of Illusion that was identical, except I changed the free cantrip at level 2.
This looks to still be a bug. Would love for it to get fixed rather than having to do a workaround. :\
Ditto.
I'm seeing Minor Illusion listed as a Cantrip in one of my player's character sheet.

Dev's is there still a plan to fix this? I don't know if this thread is so buried they aren't seeing it anymore.
